Deep desert roots meet dub-heavy dancehall style in this ecstatic mash-up of sounds from the African continent. Recorded in one of the many late-night sessions that are a feature of the annual global music fellowship OneBeat, and inspired by the meditative tradition of Gnawa music, this track features the talents of the Moroccan stalwart Mehdi Nassouli, award-winning South African jazz trumpeter Mandla Mlangeni, and infectious raga vocals by American-Ethiopian Haile Supreme (a member of Congo Sanchez – the side project of Thievery Corporation). Haile Supreme says of the making and performance of this track, “I believe this song is OneBeat personified because of its message, cosmopolitan ingredients and the extremely high energy participation it summoned from every crowd when we performed this piece on the One Beat tour.”

While in residency in Central Oregon, Mustelide (Minsk, Belarus), OMMA (Moscow, Russia) and Rapasa (Nairobi, Kenya) shared meals, long walks and eventually late night jam sessions. In a cavernous great hall in the middle of a pine forest, next to a well stoked fire, producer Mustelide began experimenting with sampling Rapasa's traditional Kenyan Nyatiti while playing and singing on her newly acquired portable Octatrack recorder. Thum Nyatiti blends Mustelide's unwavering electro pop devotion with Rapasa's delicate and infectious African folk instrumentation. In just a few days the trio wrote and recorded the "Thum Nyatiti", a bright pop song which echoes the surreal beauty of the nearby burnt down woods where they chose to shoot a music video, directed by Souki Mehdaoui.

We believe that the art of listening extends far beyond the practice of making music — it is one of the major ways we can become aware of the beauty, tragedy, and hidden potential present in our neighborhoods, institutions and families. Our work emphasizes a mobile, accessible, collaborative way of recording and producing professional quality music, a technique developed by combining the innovative art music traditions of musique concréte, hip hop, audio-journalism, and contemporary composition. This method is highly adaptable to different environments, based on finding the unique sounds and resonances of each space, drawing upon the talents of musicians in the local scene, and examining issues most relevant to each community.
