Naarm (Melbourne) based collective Butter Sessions celebrate over a decade in business with an extensive glossary of talented friends and affiliates pressed on a three-part compilation series. The label has always held the community closest, as exemplified by the 20+ artists featured over the three releases. Each 12” presents a grand soundscape anchored into the tenebrous energy of the dancefloor, with its inquisitive electronics and fierce pulse. If there was a definition for the Butter Sessions sound of ten years in the making, the answer lies here. 

The first installment opens with To Be Continued, an erratic composition from Aotearoa’s Vanessa Worm, charged with robotic bass and incessant hi-hats. Perth's upper shelf producers Guy Contact and Ewan Jansen respectively insert their own flavour with Kickflip Bouquet, a mid-tempo trance tinged number, and Back to Blood, a distorted percolating experiment. Meanwhile, Barcelona based Ivy Barkakati contributes Descarga; a gnawing improvisation piece. Sleep D offers up a brooding atmospheric piece of techno with 041111, whilst Japan’s Haruka follows suit with the elastic Ishinoko. Albrecht La'Brooy drifts into more tranquil terrain with the flickering Butter Soft before Low Flung & DJ Mind Leaf & The Herbalist wrap up volume one with the dub-induced Take Out.

The clouds began to roll in from out in the bay, the city darkened as their deep, dense grey shrouded the tall buildings and skyscrapers in a thick fog. This was the rainy season and it was time to return indoors. Long gone were the days of radiant blue sunshine and glorious heat. Some had said that this winter might be particularly cruel, it was time to retreat back to the house. 

Post Sonics is a newly formed record label to emerge from Helsinki, it has been formed by the crew behind the acclaimed club Post Bar. Like many other venues the club has struggled in the wake of the pandemic and so the label was born with the desire to inspire creativity and keep things focussed during the ongoing crisis. This is now the first record which they have put out on vinyl - a pacey affair destined to delight in the club.

Extended family functions were torturous. People you hadn't seen in years asking you the ins and outs of your not-so-successful love life and your work trajectory for the next 10 years. The only saving grace was that they didn't come around that often; it was nigh on impossible to get everybody to commit to one place and one time. There were a few ways of weathering these events and she'd perfected them all: smile through gritted teeth before excusing oneself; make up some fabricated stories; or simply ignore them and walk away — these were necessary hostilities.

Brought together by a shared love of groove-driven 90s house music, Melbourne duo Primitive Needs knuckled down in the studio during isolation; the fruits of which led to their debut EP at the beginning of the year for Dance All Day. They follow that up with their first 12" release, this time journeying across the pond to Leipzig's R.A.N.D Muzik. In typical R.A.N.D fashion the four tracks deliver a refined selection of electro, breaks and house with eyes fixed on the dance floor.

Premiering this New Hit by long time friend Lakehead today. Together with his buddy Peacy Peus they starting the new label Ciao Planet with a split release featuring the both of them.

Four fresh cuts recorded over the Covid summers of 2020-2021, fusing their vision of 90s inspired Techhouse: swingy drums, breaky grooves, ravey pads and chord stabs from outta space. For our New Hit series we present the opener track Gucci, a funky piece by Lakehead do pump up your late summer party.

Strictly speaking, this one isn't a premiere, but we've made an exception for Bluff Records' debut release.

Originally released in 2000 as an extremely limited white label promo, Voy-E's 'Day Off' EP is a little known nugget of gold that was produced during Florida's breakbeat boom in the late '90s. Sadly, due to label complications, this gem never went on to receive the full release it deserved. Luckily for us, newly formed London-based label Bluff Records has stepped in to save the day - having spent months tirelessly tracking down the original label owner, who now resides in North Carolina, USA.

Lovingly restored from the original master CD, the EP consists of three beautifully crafted club tracks, each touching on elements of breakbeat, rave and electro. Our pick for the premiere is the title track 'Day Off'.

Expert in trippy joints and knee-buckling bounce, OZ-based producer @reptant_the_lizard is back with a vengeance after an array of choice outings on the likes of Salt Mines, Planet Euphorique and Craigie Knowes. No warm-up lap needed, 'Phasic Reflex' may start as a tycho-esque daydream, what's bred in the bone comes out in the flesh. A pure adrenaline rush of vogue-ing 303, hi-voltage electro and intricate drum programming, this one has dancefloor ripper written all over it.

Keeping the tension up to hazardous levels, 'MS Plenty' zones out to a Detroit-style elixir of arpeggiated seesaws and pong-indebted, body-jacking pep. As its title suggests - or not, the B-side opener 'A Realist's Realistic Reality' clearly lies closer to a cyphered Dick-ian parallel world full of binary bleepin' and swirlin', post-kosmische infused riffs and tentacular Arpanet-style modularity, which @roza-terenzi alters into a lo-pressure dub expedition - better tasted at sunrise, feet buried deep in the sand and your hazy mind draped in the cosy folds of a cheerful seaside sloth with friends.

Reptant - Phasic Reflex 12" w/ Roza Terenzi Remix (OYSTER25 - Snippets)

One of the scene's most consistent operators, X-Kalay are back at it again with more yellowy loveliness - this time round featuring debutant and rising Australian DJ / producer, Andy Garvey - showcasing her take on deep and breaksy electro throughout the record.

We premiere title track and A1 “More Than Meets the Eye” which provides a thoughtful, finely crafted cut, kicking off the record as it means to continue. Stacked pads and a delicate twinkling melody are built around a weighty acid riff, which is fast becoming a hallmark of AG material. As with the record as a whole, listening is suited both to the introspection of headphone listening as well as it is the club.
