About one year after our Vol. 2, clubs and dancing bars were closed again in France. This sad news made us decide to launch again our Edits series, slightly renaming it “Paradise edits”. Fortunately, the good contacts we made through the last year helped us pulling together this new compilation quite fast. First, we had the Brooklyn duo Fundido, part of Earth Beat crew, with whom we had been chatting for quite a while and talked many times about having an edit from then. Then, we asked Sputnik, a DJ from Moscow to join, as we were enchanted by his work for That’s A Steal and his release on Gop Tun records earlier this year. A few days later, Nicolas Kotowicz, another Russian artist, contacted us to share his edit and we thought he would be a perfect addition to the comp. Finally, Latane introduced us to Lloyd with a bunch of edits and we were very keen to include him too.
Here’s the result of their works and a few questions we asked them about their stories and their approach to edits.

Colombian-born, New York-raised producer and instrumentalist Felipe Quiroz aka Prince of Queens brings his unique synthesis of trans-caribbean culture with house and techno to RNT on his Merida EP. Known for releases on Names You Can Trust and his band Combo Chimbita, this lush and varied EP invites you into a world where vintage tropical sounds and modular synthesizers live side-by-side on the dance floor.

With 6 songs stretched across two sides, the record explores a wide range of tempos and electronic Latin vibes, and boasts gorgeous cover art that suits the emotion of the music perfectly. Although he is a seasoned producer, Prince of Queens is still a relatively new name on the club scene…but with this definitive musical statement it’s a name that the heads will remember.

Prince of Queens - Macaria's Funk

Back in 2018, Argentinian producer Fernando Pulichino released ‘Search of Indigo’ on Leng, a shuffling slab of colourful, Balearic-adjacent dub disco featuring his own distinctive lead vocals and backing vocals from Luca Gasparini. Six years on, the track returns renewed and refreshed thanks to a string of new floor-friendly reworks by LTJ Experience and Pulichino himself.

Fernando kicks off the EP with his ‘AM Mix’, an inspired re-invention that re-frames the song as a hard-wired, acid-fired chugger – all restless, razor-sharp TB-303 lines, low-slung bass guitar and sparkling piano riffs. On the digital version of the EP Pulichino has also offered up his ‘PM Mix’, a deliciously Balearic disco dub rich in colourful synth sounds, elastic bass, flanged guitars and sun-bright piano licks.

It's LTJ Experience’s trio of remixes that lie at the heart of the EP though. The Italian producer, real name Luca Trevisi, initially made his name as a downtempo and nu-jazz producer before perfecting a trademark style of chugging, slow-motion hedonism that draws influence from both deep house and nu-disco. His main Remix foregrounds many of these trademark elements, in the process delivering a bongo-rich chugger laden with delay-heavy bass guitar sounds, head-nodding drums, heady guitar loops and echoing vocal snippets.

On the Dirty Mix, Trevisi reaches for tight, short TB-303 ‘acid’ loops, a more sparse and heavy rhythm track offering a more heads-down, dubbed-out affair that should delight those who love late night and early morning hypnotism with flashes of wide-eyed sonic bliss. Then, to round things off, Trevisi delivers a heady, atmospheric and spaced-out Dub full of jazz guitar licks, bubbling electronics, vocal snippets and effects-laden bass. It’s a winning combination.

Michele Mininni's debut album Pop Archetypes continues to serve up gold for a new Gallo remix on Hell Yeah following Keita Sano's take on 'Urban Voodoo'.

This new release features the original single 'Carousel Of Tears' which is a shimmering, immersive soundscape with dreamy pads and the most subtle of rhythms. Then comes a remix from Gallo. His Tropical Hinterhof mix is a nine-minute synth odyssey that will work as well by a crackling fire as it will a gorgeous sunset.

This is another fresh perspective on Michele Mininni's fine original.

Allez les presales! Everybody’s favourite Parisian party fiends are back, polishing up another batch of patchy pound bin finds and not-on-Discogs delights for your next summer soirée. Putting their orange-eagle eyes to good use, the LYO crew have trawled the crates of Europe and beyond for this sunkissed set, working the scalpel to the max to pack the dancefloor in arms aloft ecstasy. 

Our party starts with the kwaito groove of “Avidio””, a killer bit of late 80’s Afro-action boasting synth marimba, alien bass blasts and life affirming vocal chants. Not only is this cut moving in the ants-in-your-pants/dancing-like-a-madman sense, but its Sting-on-safari emotion and clarinet solo could bring a tear to a glass eye.

Cartwheeling between aspirational jazz-funk and afro-cosmic, ‘Yanga Mbiwaa’ makes its way to the heart of the party like a bewildered Parisian at an Ivorian wedding. As tumbling toms rumble like thunder on the Serengeti, an oddball exotica chant encourages the nearby wildlife to shake a tail-feather to the Club Tropicana guitars and buzzing synthbass. 

At last you have something to keep Quantum Jump’s ‘Lone Ranger’ company! Last but not least comes ‘Autoradio’, a very well mannered monsieur living the French highlife by the sea and sun of the Mediterranean coast. Effervescent Afrobeat guitars and swooning sax dance over a rolling rhythm section of buoyant bass and 80s percussion, while a spoken vocal drawls in your direction and the girls ask if you’re ok. It’s only when the pinging, ringing, madly modulated bass breakdown bounds through your surroundings that you’ll wonder who slipped what in your drink…

Malmö’s own and FH fave, Sune steps in for Better Listen’s tenth release, continuing a run of sweet Scandinavian finds for the label. The Butter Love EP is a true reflection of the Crime City man’s sound; packed front to flip with playful, dusty yet ever soulful samples, adorned by heady drum machine programming.

'Do You Even' is so very Sune. If you have not yet had the joys of the Swede's back catalogue passing through your ears and consciousness, you won't be aware of the mans ability of transforming a sample into an entity so sweet, butter really wouldn't melt. This cut does exactly that. Pathways between neurones of sun and the dance, further fused by Sune's sultry tones.
