UK producer Gandalf is keeping the speed garage revival alive and pumping with the release of two brand-new tracks, Light It Up and Hold On Me. Dropping together on 8 August 2025, these cuts capture the raw, bass-heavy energy of the late-’90s garage underground — with a fresh 2025 twist.

Light It Up brings a warehouse-ready bassline, skippy 2-step percussion, and vocal chops that nod to the golden era of UKG while pushing the tempo into pure speed garage territory. Hold On Me flips the vibe, riding deep, rolling basslines and hypnotic melodies that will have ravers locked in from first drop to last beat.

“Speed garage has always been about energy and attitude,” says Gandalf.

“I grew up on those iconic basslines and swung drums, and I wanted to channel that spirit into something that works just as well at 3am in a club today as it would’ve back in ’98.”

The double release cements Gandalf’s growing reputation in the UK underground, following a run of tracks that have been championed by DJs across the garage, bass, and house scenes. With support already bubbling in the speed garage community, Light It Up and Hold On Me are primed to become essential weapons in summer 2025 DJ sets.

DJ  and  production  duo  Hybrid  Theory  have been  working  their  sonic  cuts  in  the  cultural hubs  of  the  midlands.  Birmingham  is  a  go-to city  for dance  music  fans,  holding the  genre's  most  seminal  events  and pushing  its  grittiest, underground sounds.  Since  2010,  they've  been  platforming  releases  on  their  esteemed  Four40  imprint,  a  cutting  edge label  in  the  UK  bass  scene  which  has  been  supported  by  tastemakers  Tom  Shorterz,  Chris  Lorenzo,  Billy Kenny,  Pete  Graham  and  Jamie  George.  Since  the  early  days,  both  the  label  and  its  head  honchos  have showed promise, flying the flag for their music and pedestalling the type of records which find themselves at home in any club, from the UK's darkest corners all the way over to Ibiza. 

Having also been featured on Diplo's Mad Decent label, as well as Norman Cook's seminal Southern Fried Records, they're  in high demand.  On top  of  Jakwob's  Boomting  Recordings  and  Black  Butter,they've  also been enlisted for remix duties by Dim Mak and have received plays from Radio1 and Radio1xtra. The interest around these artists has only grown since their first output and this next EP will throw this into overdrive. 

However  this  time  they've  delivered  three  remixes  from  rising  stalwarts  on  their  own  label.  Including newcomers Pelikann, Skepsis and B Square, Hybrid Theory demonstrates why they set up Four40 Records, giving a space for emerging artists of a high calibre, a place to push theirhard driving sounds. All having their separate takes on Hybrid Theory's ‘V.I.P', Pelikann comes out first with his bass heavy destruction giving a weightier feel to the track's composition. Skepsis draws his rework out with a stabbing hook that grabs you between each segment, growing sharper with every relay of flying beats. And finally, B Squared introduces you to his remix, taking the vocals and contorting them into snippets which bounce alongside its bassline after a free falling drop. All three artistsflex their production skill, proving that they're all ones to watch in the coming months.

Hybrid Theory prove their A&R is as honed as their music, presenting a three track EP which shows exactlywhat they're about.

Originally part of a small crop of American artists inspired by dubstep, garage, grime, jungle and other ‘nuum sounds, Kastle has transitioned through multiple aesthetic iterations since he burst into the popular consciousness 8+ years ago. The past year saw him re-focus his idiosyncratic lens on his roots of UKG and put out several tracks that received regular rotation on radio and many DJs top charts. Whether it was the instant cult classic "4 Real", the collaborations with Mind Of A Dragon, or his remixes for legends like Scott Diaz and AC Slater.

With that momentum we are happy to present "Get Right Inside", a compilation hand selected and mixed by Kastle as he continues to explore garage musics timeless sounds with hints of UK funky that perfectly fit the vibe. Half of the album is exclusive and brand new, a testament to the artists dedication to new sounds and building his own unique world.

The mix kicks off on a low-key vibe with tracks from On1 and Duncan Powell, both a bit ethereal and subtle in their details. We quickly get into an exclusive from Kastle himself, with a vocal number featuring Olivia-Louise & SAZ. As the mix rolls on it gets into some dusty bits from Exit99 and Opus -- a classic sound but still forever in the present moment. Shortly after Higgo's smooth "Interlude" the mix transitions into a few UK funky numbers from some of the best: Roska, Leda Stray, High Class Filter and Ozwald. This allows for a nice transition into some 4x4 from Tuff Culture before ending the mix on the 2-step vibe with ZeroFG's remix of "Darkside" and Cellardore's exclusive, "Get Right Inside", which you will recognize as the namesake for the album -- a nod to the compilers interest and focus on using music to affect positive psychological change inside our minds. Finally, we've got a special Kastle remix of Mind Of A Dragon's "L.T.T.M." featuring Shantie before we close out with Four40’s very own Conrad Glimpse

Despite the name, there's no goofing around with the dark and intense productions of Holy Goof. His latest three tracker kicks off with the menacing "Anyone", which cleverly fuses 4x4, hip-house and a dancehall/bass riff. Elsewhere we get the accelerated wobbly slammer "Cheatin'" and the bottom-heavy skipper, "Different".

There really does not appear to be any way of slowing down the Four40 rampage as they appear again with another storming single from the legendary Jaguar Skills. From the off we are introducing to epic orchestration followed by lethal synth design and an outstanding vocal performance from Shakes, culminating in one of the assured festival bangers of the summer.

There is no doubt that this year has been somewhat of a storm for Deadly Habits, who returns to Four40 with open arms here for his brand new ‘Past North’ EP. Following from a tasty string of singles and releases, this is the perfect way to summarize just how much we enjoy the Deadly Habitz sound.  The project consists of four storming originals, kicking off with the high energy drum rolls and exciting percussive switches of ‘The Night’, which combines blissful subs with choppy vocals for a real party. Next, we dive into the xylophone like melodic chimes of ‘Love It’ which adds a more colourful element to the release.   Following this we land in the more nostalgic chord switches and choppy, 2-step style drum maneuvers of ‘Calling’, which strips back the heavier drum work to employ more clicky drum set. This is then followed up with a tasty finale through the throwback flavours of ‘90’s Vibes’. This one does what it says on the tin, with crunchy drum expanses and shimmering electronic melodics being sewn throughout the composition from start to finish.   What a way to round up the year from one of 2019’s stand out UKG producers!
