For the third installment in our Finders Kreepers dedicated vintage horror soundtrack series we begin with an obscure French witch flick which pulls together stylistic echoes of both Bell Book And Candle and Czech gothic thriller Morgiana then feeds them through the musical mind of one the true pioneers of electronic composition for this little known OST by a well known sonic maverick. Often evading the composer’s discography lists Pierre Henry’s rare score to Malefices (aka The Hex or Where The Truth Lies) hears our bonefide musique concrète originator at what is perhaps his most melodic and fragile (especially for the formative era) layering vocal tape loops and gossamer feminine voice treatments with plucked strings, white noise wind and brooding industrial piano textures for this intoxicated poison peon which stands as the perfect opener to an intense soundtrack for those lucky enough to find the original record (or film for that matter).

The second cut on this limited edition 45 is a classic piece of unnerving horror composition that adopts the same child-like vocal/brooding undercurrent that has earned scores like The Innocents, Night Of The Hunter and Profondo Rosso an indelible place in our nostalgic nervous systems.  Creating a major stir as a novel and stage play before benefitting a celluloid adaptation The Bad Seed shocked audiences with the first cinematic killer kid in mainstream cinema following a did she/didn't she plot set to innocent nursery rhymes played in fragile minor keys against paranoid orchestral restraint.  Mirroring the theatrical mother’s worst fears and accentuating the lead roles split personality The Bad Seed earned composer Alex North continued plaudits for his classy, conceptual realisation of this milestone in horror cinema soundtracking.

Italian songstress, Scerida, is releasing her album "Voglia De Perdere" on October 27th. 

I previously reviewed her fantastic "Infinito" and I have been lucky enough that Edizioni Della Notte let me listen to the whole "Voglia De Perdere". 

The heart of 'Voglia Di Perdere' lay in its music, a collection of eight tracks that held within them the essence of post-wave vibes.

 As I journeyed through the album, you could feel the nocturnal rhythms, pulsating like the heartbeat of a city coming alive after dark. Lo-fi atmospheres wrapped around you like a cozy, well-worn sweater, comforting and intimate.

"Je Ne Sais Pas" is actually an old skool undertaking in a very classical sense of songwriting. 

The sense and vibe is fluffy as clouds with a strangely irresistible lo-fi vibe interweaving through every nucleus. 

Scerida's Italian vocals engulfs the melody, with a story of insecurity and yet manifests in such a confirming manner. 

"Je Ne Sais Pas" for me stands as a delectable oddity that keeps growing for me.

From an artist in their seventies, you probably wouldn’t expect to hear an album like this. But Brazilian drumming legend Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti has been experimenting and innovating for the last half a century. As one third of cult Rio jazz-funk trio Azymuth, Mamão was at the root of the group’s ‘samba doido’ (crazy samba) philosophy, which warped the traditional samba compass with jazz influences and space age electronics. Even with his lesser known jovem guardua group The Youngsters, Mamão was experimenting with tapes and delays to create unique, ahead-of-its-time sounds, way back in the sixties. More recently Mamão recorded an album with hip-hop royalty Madlib under the shared moniker ‘Jackson Conti’.

With his first album in over twenty years, and the first to be released on vinyl since his 1984 classic The Human Factor, Mamão shares his zany carioca character across eleven tracks of rootsy electronic samba and tripped out jazz, beats and dance music. Featuring Alex Malheiros and Kiko Continentino on a number of tracks, the Azymuth lifeblood runs deep, but venturing into the modern discotheque (as Mamão would call it), Poison Fruit also experiments with sounds more commonly associated with house and techno, with the help of London based producer Daniel Maunick (aka Dokta Venom).

Take a bite of Mamão’s psychoactive Papaya and join the maestro on a weird and wonderful stroll through the Brazilian jungle.

United by a love for the music of Mamão and Azymuth, the CD and digital edition also feature remixes and dubs from some of today’s most forward-thinking producers with a penchant for percussion, including IG Culture, the 22a crew, Max Graef and Glenn Astro.

And what if the infamous UNDERGROUND and OVERGROUND albums had a third psychedelic chapter, still secret and unreleased until today? 
Yes, you heard correctly: this SUPERGROUND LP is sonically akin to the legendary pair for which composer Sandro Brugnolini will always shine worldwide, and ideally brings the trilogy to a close. Composed and recorded in two sessions between July 1969 and November 1970, the album echoes the shocking 1969's Charles Manson massacre, with tracks dedicated to the villa at Cielo Drive, in Hollywood, where Sharon Tate e Roman Polanski lived for six months. Some music was also used for an animated short movie signed by Pino Zac, “Radice Quadrata di 3”, a little art-film gem about the consumer society. 
The recordings have all in common the terrific line up, featuring MARC 4 members Antonello Vannucchi (organ), Maurizio Majorana (bass), Roberto Podio (drums), along with Angelo Baroncini (guitar) replacing Carlo Pes. An incredible groovy combo that plays a strange psychedelic rock and r’n’b with funky and prog flavor. 
Another lost masterpiece from Italian golden age soundtracks finally rescued and brought back in life to see the light of the wax for its very first time.

Alessandro Alessandroni’s ‘Afro Discoteca’ is released on a blasting 12’’ containing 4 cosmic/disco tracks drawing influences from African music - never published before these incredibly powerful and evocative recordings were rescued from an old dusty tape found in the Maestro’s vaults.

The EP became an instant classic for diggers and worldwide tastemakers, bringing the name of Alessandroni to new audiences, far beyond the circle of film scores and library music aficionados .

March 2019: Four Flies asks to a rock band (CALIBRO 35) and three amongst the most brilliant and visionary Italian DJs and producers (Jolly Mare, L.U.C.A., pAd) to rework the original tracks, giving them new life for refined modern dancefloors.

The result is a stunning collection of electronic/cosmic/balearic reworks, which respects the spirit of Alessandroni’s compositions, projecting them into our present.

Alessandro Alessandroni (Rome, Italy 03/18/1925 – Swakopmund, Namibia 03/26/2017) was one of the most important Italian musicians of the 20th century. A composer, arranger, singer and multi-instrumentalist whose impact on pop culture is immeasurable, from his unique guitar work and — perhaps most famously — his whistle for Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western soundtracks to the unforgettable vocal hook of Piero Umiliani's "Mah Nà Mah Nà”.

In a career that spans seven decades, Alessandroni scored almost a hundred movies and recorded countless production music albums, currently acclaimed by the most important musical experts around the world.

Excited to share this brilliant missive from the dancefloor leftfield. Producer, turntablist, mechanical engineer and full time rhythmatist, Jolly Mare, puts a cosmic spin on "Afro Sortilegio", originally written and recorded by composer, keyboardist, percussionist and Italian library music legend, Giuliano Sorgini. Forthcoming from musical time travellers, Four Flies Records.

Back in 2018, Four Flies Records unearthed the previously unheard ‘Africa Oscura’, considered by many as the “dark side” of ‘Zoo Folle’ – Giuliano Sorgini’s masterpiece (reissued by Four Flies Records in 2016 and since then a favourite for this writer) – and partly recorded during the same session in 1974.

The original work portrays a fictional and mysterious continent, providing a soundtrack tinged with dark moods and cosmic shades. ‘Africa Oscura’ was entirely recorded by the composer, who played all instruments in his studio in Rome. This resulted in a formal spareness, a minimalism that gives it a modern quality, something which makes it stand the test of time, or at least resonate with contemporary taste.

Since its release, ‘Africa Oscura’ has become a classic – a pivotal release not only within Sorgini’s discography, but also one that made his name more known and accessible to a new generation of music professionals, DJs and fans of electronic music.

Now Four Flies present a double 12” featuring 7 reworks by six of Italy’s most visionary DJs/producers: Jolly Mare, L.U.C.A. (aka Francisco), pAd, Painé, and Quiroga & Dario Bass. The original tracks have been reworked with different approaches, sometimes into full reinterpretations, and with demanding dance floors in mind. The result is a stunning collection of electronic, cosmic, downtempo and Balearic reworks that preserve the spirit of the original versions while projecting them into the future.

Of his rework, Jolly Mare tells us: "The original track is dense with rhythm and pathos, but I found that to be a little too unrelenting. So, in agreement with Giuliano Sorgini, I decided to re-record it at a slower tempo. The piece immediately acquired an even more obscure and ancestral aura, combining organic and electronic vibes in a perfect Afro-cosmic style. We then layered additional conga rhythms and guitar and synthesizer phrases on top of it. Everything took shape surprisingly quickly."

Released February 19 on all digital formats plus vinyl over two volumes.
