A new player in an Ancient Game... A bendy spoon in the Matrix...

Based in the Northern Rivers, NSW, Juups is known for his versatility behind the decks and ability to mix an array of styles. He was an easy choice to include in the Music From The Mezzanine series, and although itʼs been a while since we asked him to record a mix, it was definitely worth the wait!

Juups specially crafted this mix for MFTM from a balcony with a view of Wollumbin, a very special place for the Bundjalung people. The thing about Wollumbin is that it is the highest most easterly peak of mainland Australia, and therefore receives the continentʼs first ray of sunlight at dawn each day.

The intention here, is for us to be reminded that as each day begins, we too experience a new beginning and always have a choice in how our day will unfold.

In this mix, Juups takes us on a musical journey which blends fast and slow, expansion and contraction. He hopes to inspire us to find the beauty in all things and see our challenges as an opportunity to grow.

This months mix is from Daria A.K.A Skorpion King who you would normally find ripping the dance floor apart with their bass heavy, energetic performances. We approached Daria to see if they would be interested in creating an MFTM mix, expecting a chilled dub experience. What we got was something so wonderfully different. This set showcases Skorpion King’s dynamic range as an artist - it’s an incredibly creative journey though sound where their use of the delay pedal gives the mix a transcendent, magical and spiritual kind-of-vibe and makes it feel more like a live set. We could not be prouder to be releasing it under the MFTM banner, we hope you enjoy the journey.

I’m a big feeler, there is no doubt about it. Usually when creating mixes I feel really overwhelmed at the waiting in solitude between tracks but this time I released a lot of overwhelming feelings. For most of the recording I was sobbing, singing along, snot dripping out my face. In that moment I missed my family a lot, my heart hurt for that reason and many more. It’s really strange and twisting times for so many if not all of us. 

Coming out of an isolating period after gender affirming surgery I found myself feeling pretty raw and creating this mix was a big release. I chose songs from my childhood, tracks that have helped me through rough times and some glimpses of genres that I couldn’t live without.

Being brought up in such a rich music environment was a true privilege and the diversity in sounds I had around me as a kid wasn’t truly appreciated until I hit my late 20’s. Some of the tracks are ones that have stuck with me offered by friends that came at serendipitous times. Nicolas Jaar, Clair De Lune, Alice Coltrane all huge saviours and remind me of beautiful people. 

About two thirds of the way through I wanted to stop but I felt I had to see the journey through. So, this mix isn’t about technical genius. It’s about surviving through pain because you know there will always be warmer days ahead. The CDJs are fed through a new pedal I had bought [Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler] which I played with throughout which is where the haunting echoes, clicks and cords bumps come through. It was an experiment that worked out beautifully. May this lullaby help you journey through and may you feel my heart with you.

It is an absolute honour to be presenting this next mixtape from one of Adelaide’s finest and most prolific artist/dj/producer @Inkswel aka Ras Krishna

He kicked his music career off in ‘99 and had his first release in 2010 on Amsterdam’s @rushhourmusic. He’s worked with likes of Talib Kweli, Amp Fiddler, Steve Spacek, Lee Scratch Perry and Georgia Anne Muldrow (just to name a few), releasing internationally recognised music that crosses between hip-hop, house, electro, reggae, dub, RnB and funk. 

He’s just released his new album this week called “Follow the Stars” which takes his tally up to 13 albums, 60 singles and EPs - not a bad effort... and if that’s not enough, he’ll be touring New Zealand from November 23-27. 

If this busy man has managed to put time aside to create this Reggae/Dub mixtape, then the rest of us should be able find some time to listen to it.

We first saw Wyx tear it up at a doof a couple of years ago. He was an absolute highlight of the night and such a pleasure to watch. Needless to say, we did whatever we could to meet the man, get on his good side and then asked him if he would mind making a little mixtape for yours truly. It took some buttering up, but hours later, about 24 hours to be honest, he agreed to the favour. What we got was even more than expected. This jewel of a set is a deep, mindful journey of slow and deliberate rhythms, perfect for those relaxing summer moments and gorgeous sunrises. We know you’ll love this as much as we do!

He is one half of the duo that created 'Ancient World’ which was a meeting point for most of the crew. He's a quirky, artistic, legend with fantastic taste in music and has held a residency at The Exeter every Wednesday night for the last few years. Unfortunately, due to COVID, we can no longer experience his sets in the flesh, so we will have to be content with recorded sets for now. Music from the Mezzanine is the musical hub of Fox and Baby Cass (SJADO). 

MFTM was started in an effort to allow dj’s and selectors to be creative and explore a different side of their musical repertoire that they’d be unable to share in a regular club setting. We’d also like MFTM to be a tool for the audience to find and connect with local and international talent in the hope of bringing people together through music.
