Track for Alternative Jam #3

To capture the vibe of the 1985 Super Mario Bros., I used only one plugin for the entire track: Chipsound from Plogue. This plugin samples real chips from consoles back in the day, allowing me to recreate the original texture as closely as possible to what we were limited to back then.

I crafted a unique rhythmic bass line as the main vibe of the track, adding high-pitched arpeggios to mimic a mining effect. I also incorporated occasional odd harmonies to break away from a perfectly tonal sound.

I experimented with different song structures, starting with a more legato section, then jumping to a contrasting rhythmic section before returning to the original vibe of the song.

For the initial part of the track, I aimed to establish a relaxed and mysterious atmosphere. I wanted to create a space where listeners could casually contemplate the possibilities of their Minecraft world without feeling overwhelmed. The second section maintains a similar chill vibe, leaning towards a lo-fi aesthetic, even though it's not strictly that genre. I've preserved a simple chord progression but added dynamic melodic and percussive elements to craft a captivating soundscape that inspires creativity.

I'm pushing beyond my limits by taking on the super challenge. I explored how to create a piece that works seamlessly both forward and backward, not only in terms of notes but also textures and timbre. My process started by selecting sounds that could easily be flipped and still function normally in reverse. I used synths with identical attack and release times, ensuring that they would perform consistently whether played forwards or backwards.

Additionally, I recorded some sounds, reversed them, and blended them with the originals to create unique textures that work in either direction. For the composition itself, I opted for an intensity pyramid, building up and then coming down, which felt like a natural way to unify the forward and backward elements and keep everything cohesive.

This piece has a slightly experimental feel since the entire project was a huge experiment for me. It was a tougher challenge than expected, but I learned many new techniques I hadn’t considered or thought of.

I aimed for a more "classical" and ominous style, blending orchestral and hybrid sounds for a modern twist while retaining a traditional feel. I think it captures the arrival of the Death Knight well. The track begins with church bells announcing the Knight, followed by a powerful entrance with choir, strings, brass, and synths to signify his presence. The next section portrays his march through our world, ending similarly to the beginning with varied textures, leaving the impression that Death has fulfilled his purpose.

For this track, I aimed for something special. While the composition itself may not seem extremely impressive at first glance, the way it was created is quite unique and rooted in video game music techniques, though with a twist. This 3 minutes piece was designed as a single instance, but it’s unique every time you play it because the music is procedura and controls the movement depending on the states of the emotions happening.

Using Wwise, I adapted the music with states and switches to generate a different version with each playthrough. The structure remains similar, but the instrumentation, effects, and chord placements vary every time. I also added small melodic elements that can appear randomly during the "main" section, creating unexpected moments. The result is a track that could play for 20 minutes or more without repeating itself exactly. This was my creative approach for the jam: crafting a dynamic, ever-evolving track that adapts every time you play the game.

For the game’s theme, I combined inspiration from The Far Reaches and The Picture to create a modern sound infused with traditional Japanese elements. The envisioned game is a walking simulator where the player endlessly falls into a deep abyss. The journey begins in near-total darkness, but as you descend, the world gradually reveals its details, culminating in full light at the end.

I had another track idea in mind but only had time to complete this one.
