It's Like Rain On Your Wedding Day

For Discalced Carmelites, October 15th is the Solemnity of St. Teresa of Avila.  Along with St. John of the Cross, she founded the religious order to which I belong; I'm a Secular Discalced Carmelite.  So, in this homily, I give a shout out to all my fellow Carmelites out there.  I also want to give a shout out to all of you who wear the brown scapular, or the scapular medal, because all of those who do so have an affiliation with the Carmelite Order.  In her writings, St. Teresa displays a wit and a charm which have endeared her to many people throughout the centuries, but underneath her wit and charm was a deep and abiding faith with exuded a joy for the gospel; for that reason alone she is a doctor of the church.  Even if you are not interested in becoming a member of the secular order of Discalced Carmelites, and even if you are not interested in wearing the brown scapular, I want to encourage you to pray the rosary. I'm Back In The Saddle Again

I gave this homily on Feb. 14, 2024: Ash Wednesday; 9:30 AM Our Lady of Grace School Mass at St. Anne's in East Moline. Attached to this recording is a photo of Pope Francis receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday.  They do it differently in Rome from how we do it in the United States.  In Rome, the ashes are imposed on the crown of the head; whereas in the United States the ashes are imposed on the forehead.  Despite the difference, receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday is a demonstration of our solidarity with Catholics and non-Catholic Christians in our desire to consecrate these 40 days of Lent to the Lord in preparation for Easter.

It's Not Boring

I gave this homily on April 23, 2024; Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Easter; 8:00 AM Tuesday Mass at St. Anne's in East Moline. Attached to this recording is a piece of promotional art for the 2024 film "Damsel" which is now showing on Netflix.  I haven't watched it yet, but I get the impression that in this movie the damsel in distress has to save herself.  No St. George is coming to the rescue.  I make just a passing reference to this movie.  My main objective in this homily was to talk about St. George as the patron saint of the Boy Scouts. St. George is also the patronal saint of Pope Francis.  His baptismal name is Jorge which is the Spanish version of the name "George."

This is the homily that I plan to give tonight at 7:00 PM on April 13, 2017 at the Mass of the Last Supper, the beginning of the Easter Vigil.  This will be occurring at St. John's in Rapids City.  While Easter Sunday Masses might be packed, you don't have to worry about not finding a seat in Church at any of the other liturgies of the Easter Triduum.
