For our third mix, we are happy to share the “Boo Boo Trance Mix” from New York’s own Quiet Time Tapes. The label typically specializes in far out ambient music, but this mix is a hard B-line. Clocking in at just over an hour, it features unrelenting big room trance and Eurodance bangers that will transport listeners back to the late ‘90s and plop you on a beach somewhere in Goa. Turn it up loud, put on your PLUR bracelet, and let it wash over you. 

Sex Mag: Quiet Time Tapes specializes in boundary-pushing ambient music, but your mix is entirely trance bangers. How long have you been into trance and what about the genre appeals to you? 

QTT: I think for a lot of people in our generation, that pop-ified Eurodance and trance sound evokes a strong nostalgic feeling, since we heard a lot of this kind of music as kids in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. For me, it was those “Now Dance” cassettes. I’ve always been a sucker for this genre’s way of taking elements of underground dance music and adding a layer of shine, refinement, and perfectionism for a pop audience. 

Sex Mag: Where do these tunes originate? It’s hard to determine what country or even what year the majority of the tracks come from. 

QTT: Some of these are early ‘00s Eurodance hits from, well, Europe. Others come from current artists and labels putting a modern spin on Eurodance or Goa trance — artists like TDJ and labels like Union Trance Mission.

Sex Mag: What’s the best setting to bump this mix?

QTT: An intense walk through New York City or a New Year’s party 

Sex Mag: Are there regular parties, raves, or even DJs that are dedicated to this type of dance music in the US?

QTT: I am not sure, but please let me know if there are because I want to go! I think nostalgic music experiences can be very powerful and that music like this may open up the scene to people who are seeking something that is fun, accessible, and not too serious.

Sex Mag: How would you describe the music QTT puts out to someone who’s unfamiliar? And what's on the horizon for your label? 

QTT: We put out music that some would call ambient music, but for us is just more abstract, formless music that still evokes a powerful feeling. We also love rave music, since both rave and ambient can be immersive and meditative in a sense. We have a tape by an amazing artist named Ben Bondy coming out in April, and then two vinyl releases coming out in the summer — one new release by Liai called “Pome” and one re-issue of a tape by Ulla Straus called “Big Room.”
