tattered steps on a weathered church
cardboard sandals in the rust red dirt
impish boy cracks a sunny smile
she is lured by his tender guile
far from all that she'd ever known
miles of steel stretched away from home
she belonged to the hymnal tones
so much loneliness caressed her bones
the vow was spoken and forever kept
she would follow even as she wept
softly while the tow head children slept
through blackest storm and impending wreck

winter drift, summer's dripping heat 
spring redeems autumn's dying seed
four remain while the one was lost  
unnamed child, blood red pentecost
seventh sunday was a sacred tomb
soon to return to mother's womb
years descend and the days will fall

smiles are frozen in the photographs
