Dreams Of A Deeper Soul - Paradise is a Frequency (#6)

A one off mix compiled by Kiernan Abbott, comprising of the lesser played folk / pop tracks performed in sessions and released on independent or private labels throughout the 1970-1990s in Wales. 

Welsh folk music has always been a major collectors item, with many looking to Sain or Welsh greats like Tecwyn Ifan, Sidan or Endaf Emlyn. This mix focuses on the music made in bedrooms, garages and on radio sessions should they be lucky enough to salvage the recordings. It's in our nature as Welsh people to be the 'outsider' given our minority, and geographical or historic relationship with England. 

This mix is to celebrate the musicians and artists that crafted their own sound, using the passion and can do attitude that was required to bring their music to life.

The duo have taken some well earned time away from social media and have been slowly building an archive of untouched music, soon to be added to the Repress demand lists on discogs.

This mix is truly one for the mid winter walk, ice cold acoustics and rocky climbs through a meander of outsider wonders that are untested until now.

The Welsh language scene of the 80's and 90's has been well documented and archived over the past few years, however what's unknown to many is the underground Rave scene which took place across the Nation in the 1990's up to the early 2000's. 

This mix is a snapshot of the scene that was often overlooked by Radio Stations and distributors throughout their period. Welsh language dance music is few and far between - however through many self releases, double aliases and white label pressings the scene continued to prosper.

This mix celebrates the Weird, the Wacky and the Welsh.

While 'Cymru' means 'fellow countrymen', the Anglo-Saxon name 'Wales' actually means 'foreigner' or 'outsider' despite Cymry(Welsh People)being wholly native to the land. The mix is built on this premise, that through this special language the culture is eternalised despite the pressures of the dominant neighbours.

To start the Fragments in Wax story, Kiernan Abbott (F.I.W) has compiled just over 2 hours of varied cassette tape/demo releases from his home, Wales. The mix has been a long time coming, having spent the past year researching the scene along with the support of some of the artists and figureheads heard in this mix. 

This is the first of the F.I.W series, whereby artists of different backgrounds offer a journey through some of their music that might have personal prevalence to them and an opportunity to share a story through their selections.

Helsinki based selector Juuso Tervo clusters all things psychadelic in just over an hour's grind. Having started mixing in the mid 2000's Juuso leaned toward electronic italo sounds as a DJ, however now draws from his earlier musical educations in prog rock, psychedelia, fusion, and jazz. 

His selections are dictated by the intensities different tracks have, viewing the act as a kind of composition. Breaking down and repurposing the contexts of the music is equally important to Juuso, which always ensures that special element of surprise.

Palestinian filmmaker, activist and archivist Mo'min Swaitat of Sealevel Records showcases the highlights from the label's immense archive of funk and jazz cassettes from Palestine, Lebanon and Syria.

We are super fortunate to be able to showcase some of this incredible musical archive, in which Mo'min has so kindly offered just over an hour's worth of rare sounds from this part of the world. Be sure to check out the small write up on our website for more details about Mo'min and his projects.
