Emerging Netherlands-based pairing Parallells will land on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels imprint for the first time next month. Gifting us an emotive offering in Ashes of Snow (The Rebirth Of The Phoenix), it acts as a tribute to their favourite Portuguese beach club, Yamba, which was tragically destroyed by a fire last year. 

The brother’s spoke on what inspired them: “In May 2021 a devastating fire destroyed Yamba, one of our favourite beach clubs in Caparica (Lisbon), where we often performed. Yamba’s journey through the flames has become an inspiration to us and so we decided to compose Ashes of Snow. It represents the story of the phoenix as it finally rises from its ashes and morphs into a new form, with renewed wings taking flight towards a new adventure. On The Banks of The River is a continuation of Ashes of Snow, where love flows from Lisbon’s river to the Atlantic Ocean for a night full of emotions in Caparica.”

The title track hits a wonderful sweet spot between electronic elements and organic instrumentals. It feels raw and authentic, blending saxophone segments, electric guitar tones and a jazzy-like backbone to form a cut that feels ripe for both sunrise or sunset. On The Banks of The River comes next, manifesting as a more toughened dance music number thanks to deep bass components whilst still retaining the boys’ natural sound. Rounding off proceedings is Clive Henry, who’s remix of Ashes of Snow flies the flag for contemporary minimal. Weighty kicks reside next to delicate hats before ethereal synths are brought in, creating a romanian inspired piece that you can’t help but dance to. 

Parallells are two Amsterdam-based brothers hailing from the south of France. Multi-instrumentalists, composers, producers and label owners (Klassified), their music cuts across electronica, electro-jazz and underground dance music. Their live, hybrid and DJ sets have graced some of the world’s most esteemed stages, including DGTL, Robot Heart, Mayan Warrior, The Gardens of Babylon, Wonderfruit and many more besides. Their music is also heavily influenced by world culture, a feat that led them to launch their video series concept A Day In. Through this, they immerse in diverse cultures around the world, capturing sounds from their day-to-day life and unfold the story through the medium of music. Clive Henry is a linchpin of house music as we know it today. Cutting his teeth as one half of the tribal house duo Peace Division, he has held a long-term residency at Circoloco, Ibiza and has racked up bookings at standout venues and festivals including Printworks and Houghton to name a few.

Damian Lazarus welcomes Senzala to his Rebellion label. 

Following Senzala’s offering to the 'Slowburn' V/A on the same imprint last year, the London-based artist delivers four tracks packed with sun-kissed beats and raw, percussive sounds. Conveying the essence of a party in the jungle, Senzala pays homage to Lazarus’ remote Day Zero festival in the Tulum jungle.

Senzala explains the connection between the release and the festival. "The E.P. was written towards the build-up to Damian's 'Day Zero Festival' in Tulum, Mexico. One that I have attended various times and is my favourite festival in the world. Influences were not just taken from the festival, but also from the jungle vibe and culture in Tulum, which I wanted to capture in an EP." The release displays a different approach from Senzala. "I also wanted to pioneer a sound that is niche, which will allow people to feel the jungle vibe across the world. Expect to hear this in my DJ sets." For Senzala, D.O.D. is "the start of a flourishing relationship between myself and the Crosstown family. Stay tuned."

The title track wields tribal percussion and shamanic-like vocals, as bongo drums and shimmering synthline add a post-sunset, beach-party vibe. On Dukun, Senzala churns out a tech house treat but still maintains a tribal aesthetic, as distorted vocal and siren sounds snake throughout the track. Realms combines organic percussion with progressive synth notes, dipping into a mood that feels both melancholic and spirited. The closing track Rattlesnake displays a darker side to Senzala’s productions as surreal lyrical samples slip between a warm bassline and twinkling pads. Blissed-out vibes of the highest order.

Senzala is a born and bred Londoner with roots tracing back to Brazil. An avid vinyl collector, his sound stems from years of collecting wax and exploring several sonic palettes. Today, he blends groove-rich rhythms with spiritual vocals, evoking trippy soundscapes. Previous releases span Cuttin’ Headz, SCI-Tec and Knee Deep In Sound, affirming Senzala as an artist on the rise. As a DJ, Senzala’s a regular on the Manchester and London circuits, and earlier this year, he joined the Crosstown Rebels crew for a Get Lost showcase in Miami. With more projects in the pipeline for 2022, Senzala is set to leave a significant stamp on the global house scene.

This record took a while to be finished but we're glad to finally release this beautiful EP from Matthew. The title track ‚Heimreise‘ has already been around a few years ago but never got to be released officially due to the vocal sample. After speaking to Matthew he sent us the track and we used it in our Cercle set last year which gave the track a second life and lots of people were asking for an official release. After lengthy negotiations the sample could be cleared and licensed and we finally finished the EP. We worked on a remix for ‚Heimreise' what turned out to be quite a challenge but after all we could wrap it up right before deadline and the whole record was ultimately done and set to release.

These two originals need no big introduction or explanation. ‚Heimreise' and 'Random Dub Fix' are wonderful displays of Matthews Dekay’s ability to create such hypnotic grooves that almost put you in a state of meditation. We still have so much fun playing these out that we really think this is a timeless piece of music. Thank you all for the patience, we’re happy that ‚Heimreise' found its forever home with Siamese.

Öona Dahl delivers her debut EP on Watergate, continuing her fruitful partnership with Dance Spirit along the way.

Last year’s memorable WhoMadeWho compilation saw Öona Dahl drop her first musical contribution on Watergate, collaborating with Dance Spirit for ‘Break The Stillness’, one of the highlights of the mix. The New York producer, DJ and sound designer, has cultivated a curious and evocative sound going back almost a decade, releasing quality cuts on Anjunadeep, Hallucienda (home to her 2017 album ‘Hollograma’) and All Day I Dream, where she has become a regular at Lee Burridge’s iconic party series.

‘Godtripper’ is a transcendental trip through psychedelic house tones, elevated by Dahl’s own breathy vocal and subtle swells of acid and a smooth melody line. Patrice Bäumel adds a delicious re-work built around a superb bass melody that builds to a crescendo, as layer-upon-layer reveals itself throughout. Dahl links with Dance Spirit for ‘Manic Space’, led by a delicate layer of tribal drums and a meandering melody line, crafted for sundown moments. ‘Universe Within You’ is one for the after hours, wrapped in a minimal shell it unfurls gradually into a glowing late morning house gem, resplendent in golden synths and groovy drums.

Italian-mainstay Francesca Lombardo welcomes in Echoe’s twentieth release with the three-track Horizone​. Speaking on the inspiration behind the release, Francesca described how​: “​The tracks remind me of good moments. I wanted to call the EP ‘Horizone’ as a wish for a brighter future in our industry!​ "

The title track kicks things off in a punchy fashion, as a minimal-leaning bassline chugs along with dreamy synths in the background. Space-like keys build tension, paving the way for a weighty kick-hat combo throughout. ​Darne soon takes the helm, appearing as a gritty late-night cut with hard-edged drum patterns and eerie piano rolls, before ​Sharon finishes proceedings, blending acid-twinged pulses with a tough, club-ready groove.

Label founder of Echoe and Echolette, ​Francesca Lombardo ​shines the light for Italy’s thriving electronic music output. Alongside running two labels, 2019 saw her feature on Poker Flat Recordings’ twentieth anniversary compilation with ​Flumen​, whilst this year has seen her produce ​A Million Souls ​for John Digweed’s Quattro VA on Bedrock Records. Add to this the recent ​Call Me Wrong ​remix release, which ​features incredible edits from genuine dance music royalty in the form of The Orb and 808 State, as well as her August remix of Amtrac and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs’ ​Radical,​ and it is safe to say 2020 is on track to be one of her biggest years yet. Alongside her musical work, Francesca also heads up the ‘Life of Releaf’ project, tackling the issue of climate change and deforestation by donating money from album and ticket sales to plant trees in partnership with non profit organisation, One Tree Planted.
