Francesca is the very definition of 'one to watch' right now, and whilst she may well be the youngest person to feature in this series, that's not something you would guess from her gig portfolio, or more importantly, the style and maturity of her sound. She describes herself as record obsessed, and you can hear this in her multifaceted taste clearly demonstrated throughout the mix. 

Let Francesca take you on a sunny journey through the realms of electo, post-Balearic dance, dubbed out jungle, and liquid drum & bass.

Francesca returns to Pleasure Club with yet more excursions into the ethereal with the Homology EP, touching on dub techno, ambient soundscapes and electro futurism.

As the name suggests this record explores the concept of similarity of a structure, or function of parts of different origins, based on their descent from a common evolutionary ancestor. Following on from her ‘The Inside Out’ LP of 2020, this time Francesca explores the outer realms of electronica whilst always coming back to the core essence of her vision.

This EP also serves as an announcement of her forthcoming album and label, Goodnight Cowboy. A collaborative project between herself and Remi Mazet which will look to explore slower tempos and unchartered textural planes.

The art of noise. Sound as an invisible sculpture. A two-hour journey into art’s sonic cosmos.

Sound art is a hybrid art form that bridges visual art and experimental music, using sound as both its medium and as its subject. It defines a broad range of projects dedicated to the emphasis, exploration, and experimentation of auditory perception. Sound art overlaps with experimental music or noise but tends to place greater focus on conceptual exploration of the complex relationships between the sound, listener and space. The way music and sound art are experienced is also different. While a musical piece should be experienced in its entirety, sound art is usually experienced in a venue where the artist has no control over how much time a listener spends with a piece.
Conceptual artist John Cage’s notorious piece 4’33” contributed greatly to the separation of musical composition and sound art while Max Neuhaus, another pioneer in the field of contemporary art and music, is credited with being the first to use sound as a medium for site-specific installations. Some artists explore sound in its pure state, simultaneously bridging and muddling barriers between sound, noise, and music in the contemporary or historical sense. Others, such as Samson Young, investigate the political and cultural implications of human interaction with the aural.

https://soundcloud.com/francescamackay is back with Architextures, this month bringing you 2 hours of music inspired by AfriCOBRA, and the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), a still-flourishing organisation of primarily African American Chicago musicians whose interdisciplinary explorations expanded the boundaries of jazz.

AfriCOBRA was a Chicago-based group of black artists whose shared aim was to develop their own aesthetic in the visual arts to empower black communities. Rather than bringing about change through political revolt, these artists used the black identity, its style, attitude and worldview to foster solidarity and self-confidence throughout the African diaspora.

This month's show includes music from AACM members Wadada Leo Smith, Muhal Richard Adams and Tomeka Reid and Jeff Parker, and is inspired by the intertwined legacy, style and ethos of the sounds and visual art of both collectives.

Art pop emerged alongside Pop art and was influenced by the movement's integration of high and low culture, exploring ideas such as pop's status as commercial art, notions of artifice and the self, and questions of historical authenticity. Musicians and bands like Iggy Pop, The Velvet Underground and Roxy Music echoed Pop Art's emphasis on simplicity, pioneering a modernist avant-garde approach to art-rock and pop that ignored the conventional hierarchies of artistic representation and explored the relationship between creativity and commercialism; simultaneously celebrating and critiquing popular and mass culture. This month’s mix explores the influence of Pop art on music.

Tune in for this month's episode of https://soundcloud.com/francescamackay 's Architextures radio show, this time focused on one of the most significant cultural movements in Brazil: Tropicália ⚡️
The term Tropicália was first coined by artist Hélio Oiticica, for an artwork of the same name, which he exhibited at MAM Rio in 1967. The piece demonstrated Oiticica’s desire to give contemporary art a specifically Brazilian character to subvert the “purity” of European modernism. Some trace Tropicália back to 1928, and Oswald de Andrade's Anthropophagic Manifesto. Andrade’s main argument was that Brazil’s history of “cannibalising” (or absorbing and creating something new) from other cultures was its greatest strength.
The ideas presented in this essay helped to inspire a wider cultural and political shift in Brazil. A year later, in 1968, the Tropicália movement was epitomised by the album Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis by musicians Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes, Tom Zé, Nara Leão, Torquato Neto, and Rogério Duprat. The album came to be considered the defining sound of the Tropicália movement. The artists involved created a new exotic version of pop, being as influenced by psychedelia as it was by samba, bossa nova and more traditional South American genres. Tropicália created musical and cultural anarchy, a revolution in Brazilian sound.

The YBAs, or Young British Artists, were a group of innovative artists who began exhibiting at the end of the 1980s and rose to international prominence in the 1990s. They represented a new and exciting phase in British art and were considered innovative, entrepreneurial, provocative and irreverent. They appeared during a period of political and economic upheaval, when Britain was perceived as lacking a truly vibrant postmodern art culture comparable to the Pictures Generation in New York and the Neue Wildern in Berlin. Postmodernism’s characteristic traits: appropriation, rejection of fine art materials, preoccupation with spectacle, and the rejection of distinctions between high and low culture, ran through the heart of much of the YBAs' work. Leading artists of the group include Damien Hirst, whose installation The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living consists of a dead shark preserved in formaldehyde in a vitrine, and Tracey Emin; My Bed is comprised of her own dishevelled double bed surrounded by detritus. The shock value, use of non-art material and processes of such works, and the group’s ‘can do’ entrepreneurial attitude and wild ‘art-world slumming’ lifestyles documented in the UK tabloids placed the YBAs at the epicentre of intense debate within the art establishment, media and public spheres and fuelled their subsequent global notoriety and massive commercial success.

Architextures 025: Young British Artists - Francesca

The Inside Out was written in London in early 2019. The city skylines and urban landscape during the cold winter months provided the perfect muse to what would become Francesca’s debut album on Pleasure Club. Incorporating the broken rhythms and sub bass culture of the capital, the feel of the album - whilst metallic and electronic - maintains a progression throughout that transforms more experimental sounds into something that possesses a timeless feel. With each track named after a work by C.S Lewis, the album explores the theme of ‘Sehnsucht’; the ability of a soundscape to take you back (or forward) to a place you cannot name, and its capacity to create emotions that are both timeless and unique to one’s own experience. A futuristic record which subtly references the sounds of classic UK techno and electro.

Endless tunnels coated in matte grey panels and a century’s worth of dust enclose the girl on her journey home. The teetering claustrophobia is subsided by brief moments of social etiquette and the optimism of getting a seat on the tube. As she heads deeper underground, submerging herself in the ever-increasing density of recycled air, the mild panic of stepping slightly too close to the edge ensures everybody’s on their best behaviour. With three minutes to wait, and a packed platform, she desperately looks for distractions in the form of adverts and billboards, much to the turmoil of her inner Marx. Before long, the gentle embrace of warm air and the shriek of dated tracks fill her every sense with surging pleasure and unwind her coiled mind. Home soon. 

Pleasure Club, the London label headed by legendary Bobby. are on release duty for Francesca’s debut, The Inside Out. Packed full of exciting compositions that explore the diverse sounds and musical history of our capital, it doesn’t shy away from showing the city love. Ranging from broken beat and garage to more ambient cuts, the release highlights Francesca’s versatility and broader respect for the inherent sounds of London. Our pick ‘Tao’ is an especially frosty electro jaunt, fully-loaded with sparkling pads and enough robotics to put Skynet to shame.

As a DJ and producer, London-born Francesca moves with real style and grace. Over the last couple of years, she's been making her name as a DJ, playing regularly for parties like Flux and locking in warm up slots for the likes of Peggy Gou, Artwork and Cassy, and she's holding this all down while studying an economics degree too.

Last month saw the release of her debut album The Inside Out on Bobby.'s Pleasure Club imprint, which introduced us to her subtle and intricate electro creations, something we're hoping we'll hear much more of in the future. 

Off the back of the release Francesca puts together a mix of dubby ambient, electronica and breakbeat with that signature funky touch she always brings to her DJ sets.
