Meet composer and clarinetist Carolyn Goodwin, founder of Copenhagen Clarinet Choir, and hear her musical origin story in both words and sounds. She originally studied classical saxophone and played new compositions. Later in life, she discovered improvised music.

She talks about her methods of composing for improvisation, such as defining simple ideas as musical spaces to move through and explore in sequence, like the life of a newly hatched bird growing from whisper songs to singing in flight. Improvisation, to Carolyn, is about listening, working with subtle textures, nuances, and overtones, discovering the limit of what her instrument can do, and also discovering the power to take whatever is encountered in the musical space and sending it new directions.

Mnemosis (2012), for seven players

A generative analog synth setup using Behringer Crave and the Doepfer A160-2 Clock Divider. 

The nose output from Crave is routed into MIX 2, and VC MIX is set to the exact spot, where the noise signal becomes a random rhythm. The output of VC mix is routed to the Clock divider, and from there (using the prime number setting) various timed divisions are routed to various inputs on the Crave (OSC FM, OSC MOD, VCF CUTOFF, etc).

This is an audio teaser from the premiere of my 40" composition "OHNE GARANTIE - music for a future without guarantees", based on texts by Zola Mennenöh with thoughts about how to cope with the uncertainty of future, inspired by Lisa Nyberg.  

Probably the most silent music I´ve ever written.

Francesco Bigoni – tenor sax, clarinet

Born in 1982, Francesco has been active on the Italian scene since his early twenties, before relocating to Copenhagen, Denmark in 2009. After an irregular education, he graduated from the Soloist class at the Rhytmic Music Conservatory, Copenhagen in 2012. He shared the stage with prominent musicians as Enrico Rava, Gianluca Petrella, Stefano Battaglia, Greg Cohen and Jim Black. He has been a founding member of the Italian artist collective/record label El Gallo Rojo, and is currently part of Danish ILK, appearing in over forty albums and touring extensively in many different countries. As a passionate and multifaceted wind instrumentalist and composer, Francesco pursues sound from all sides: he holds a degree in electrical engineering and is active in the field of electroacoustics and interaction design. Francesco also co-leads On Dog (with Piero Bittolo Bon, Beppe Scardino, Mark Solborg and Marc Lohr) and Crisco 3 (with Piero Bittolo Bon and Beppe Scardino); he is featured as a sideman in a number of projects led by Zeno De Rossi, Francesco Diodati, Maria Faust, Morten Pedersen, Danilo Gallo a.o.
