The Journey of Lava

KIGEN is a composition inspired by the “Genesis”, from the Old Testament. It’s divided in seven movements, each describing a single day of the biblical Creation process. 
The length and dynamic of each movement are golden ratio-based and were originally composed as an audiovisual quadriphonic performance. 

The first track depicts the origin of light and darkness, using as main features diverse forms of noise, alternated with silence and unstable low frequencies. 
Residual noises mutate into wind sounds introducing the second piece which represents the genesis of the four elements: air, water, fire and earth. The track is divided in four parts based on processed field and foley recordings, tracked with binaural techniques and additional harmonic incursions generated from the resonating bodies of the inorganic materials. 
In the third day concrete recordings of trees and plants emerge together with primitive sound waves, fragmented melodies and essential repetitions, to symbolise the birth of the first living beings. 
In the fourth day space is created and harmonic structures appear for the first time, evolving in a dramatic crescendo of layered textures. 
The fifth day features animal sounds, leading to the creation of mankind, where voices, percussive patterns, melodic elements and harmonic textures accumulate and saturate to the ending seconds of final rest.

A collection of unprocessed field recordings from the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest of Yasuni National Park, arguably the most biologically diverse place on the planet and home of many threatened species.

Featuring sounds from titi monkeys, red howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, mosquitos, hoatzins, cicalas, crickets, tucans, macaws, black caiman, parrots and many more. 

Available on Bandcamp for purchase including 20 high resolution photographs by Dominika Miłek in digital format for desktop/mobile screensavers or printing.

His personal work generates from a diverse range of interests mainly associated with procedures that depict sound and visual forms out of a naturalistic context, while often filtering the outcome with machine-driven techniques. The main ideas gravitate towards field and foley recordings exploitation, acoustic ecology, sound synthesis, audio spatialization and data sonification as composition tools.

Based in Reykjavík since 2017 as studio head engineer, producer and musician at the legendary Greenhouse Studios, has been working on numerous Bedroom Community releases and collaborative projects for screen, stage, live and recorded mediums. He has worked alongside artists including Valgeir Sigurðsson, Ben Frost, Damien Rice, Swans, Dustin O’Halloran, Atli Örvarsson, JFDR, Daniel Pioro, Liam Byrne, Nadia Sirota, Sandro Mussida, 404.zero and many others.

His musical contributions include the scores for Netflix's 'DARK' series and 'The Old Guard", "Defending Jacob" Apple TV+ series, ‘The County’, ‘An Acceptable Loss’, ‘Little Moscow’, the theatre plays ‘Woman Undone’, ‘Medea’, 'Kæra Jelena', 'Meistarinn og Margaríta', the stage artworks ‘SAFE’, ‘Valley’.

His productions and performances feature complex sound design based on concrete & modular recordings, extensive sub-bass frequencies, fragmented harmonies, noise & textures from processed acoustic instruments together visual contents from manipulated macro footage and generative techniques.

He has performed worldwide with different projects in clubs, festivals, galleries, residencies and theatres.
