Cellist Beatriz Blanco and pianist Federico Bosco follow the success of their first Odradek album with Of Love and War, a sumptuous programme of music by Nadia Boulanger, Richard Strauss, Debussy, Webern, Hindemith and Fauré, featuring mezzo-soprano Solenn’ Lavanant-Linke.

Of Love and War, partly inspired by Eduardo Galeano’s novel Days and Nights of Love and War, draws parallels between the isolation and pent-up passions of wartime and the experiences of the current pandemic. Much of this repertoire was composed around the time of the First World War, but also embraces broader themes of beginnings and endings, night and day, love and loss. 

Nadia Boulanger is celebrated as a teacher of great composers, but was a composer in her own right; her Three Pieces occupy a similar soundworld to that of Debussy, whose Cello Sonata is at the heart of the programme, and Fauré, whose song Les berceaux we hear in an arrangement for cello and piano. There are works by Webern that show us ‘before and after’ his early lessons with Schoenberg: the Zwei Stücke für Cello und Klavier of 1899, written when Webern was only 16, and the Drei Kleine Stücke, Op. 11 and Cello Sonata, both dating from 1914. The album discovers a softer side to Hindemith in his richly Romantic Three Pieces, Op. 8, and the whole recital is framed by glorious songs by Strauss and Debussy, performed by Solenn’ Lavanant-Linke.

"Prince Igor is an opera in four acts with a prologue. It was composed by Alexander Borodin. The composer adapted the libretto from the East Slavic epic The Lay of Igor's Host, which recounts the campaign of Russian prince Igor Svyatoslavich against the invading Polovtsian tribes in 1185. The opera was left unfinished upon the composer's death in 1887 and was edited and completed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov. I live in a sleepy little village nestled in the shadow of a ruined castle on the stormy shores of Scotland in the British Isles. I'm a theoretical & mathematical physics research student reading quantum cosmology, and slowly on my way to an academic career as a mathematical physicist. Unfortunately, I've had a slight setback in the form of a spinal injury that's left me with severe disability, chronic pain, and on morphine, for well over a decade now. Such is life.

I re-share a lot of science and technology podcasts, but I also adore open-source culture and I'm a self-confessed audiophile and filmscore fanatic. I'm not a musician, so all sounds are just re-shares of music I like. A lot of the music I re-share is by the awesome composers and artists on SoundCloud, with many works [legally] downloadable.

Genres I'm especially fond of include: instrumental, classical, contemporary classical, minimalism, ambient, and cinematic soundtracks. I'm also interested in experimental, fractal, mathematical, algorithmic, emergent and AI-generated music – but more from an academic perspective, so I don't usually re-share those on SoundCloud.
