About the album

The Hunt is a musical journey that tells a story both literally and metaphorically. Though the songs were written individually, the album is loosely tied together in a single thread that binds its story. The songs are meant to reflect the story of the hunt, but how one interprets that hunt is up to each of you. For me, it's been a journey that's taken a little over three years to complete and the album in many ways reflects that. 

The Hunt is the hunt of life, hunting for health, for life, for happiness, for love, for ideas, for creativity, for success. Life has happiness, but it also has pain, and that is also reflected in some of the music (especially in Quicksand and Lament). The Hunt is the soundtrack to the film we experience every day, its ups, its downs, its successes and its losses. It's my way of expressing that, both beautifully and tragically through the different orchestral sounds, but also, in a song format that any listener can experience and enjoy even within a short moment, sitting, or within a personalized playlist. 

As I've mentioned many times before, composing music for me is a process of exploration, full of places to visit and explore and express. The music here is drawn from life itself, sometimes simple and sometimes complex. I hope you enjoy The Hunt and that the hunt of your life is always a happy, loving, and successful one. Enjoy! :)

About the album

The Apocalypse, The Doll Chronicles (Original Soundtrack), like the film, is the soundtrack that never was, made manifest. Most of it was originally composed around 2014, during the original planning and filming period. A lot of the film footage was lost to dead hard drives back then, and the music and album ended up in limbo. Some of it was lost and found, other pieces simply sat there. Once a lot of the footage was found and restored, Franco diligently worked on the music that would be included in this new, rebuilt, refocused version of the film. The new version was re-edited as more of a thought, a conceptual music driven, experimental film more in line with The Doll Chronicles concept.

The story of the film follows Doll, a woman on the edge of reality, as she explores what seems like a desolate, post-apocalyptic landscape, chased by a darkness and a past trauma she must confront to find her future. While creating the original score, as I thought about the transition of this character from the apocalypse in the sky, in her trauma, in her mind, I thought of the inner screams we carry during trying times and how their wail is no different to air raid alarms, which were the perfect metaphor for her apocalypse in every sense. So I used the voice of the strings – cellos, violas, and violins – to create and overlay these wails into a musical landscape that communicated the story, the journey, but also the landscape, both beautiful and desolate. The film’s score is a mix of orchestral and experimental, ambient music to convey the different elements of her journey.

As the reworked version of the short film, restored from the limited, recovered footage, only includes three main musical pieces, I decided to rescue some of those original concepts I composed for the original version of the film and include those conceptual recordings in the album as bonus tracks. From those bonus tracks you can get a bit of an idea as to how I originally envisioned both the film and the music, and I think listeners will really enjoy them both as they are and as what they were originally meant to be, despite the fact that they would have been reworked and redone before being used in that original version of the short film.

As I’ve mentioned many times before, composing music for me is a process of exploration, full of places to visit and explore and express, and The Doll Chronicles short films really opens up that process in an interesting way. Contagion is a moment, an interruption, signifying an expression of feelings and music that the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic and quarantine brought to light. It’s a contemporary classical life track, serving as a soundtrack to the contagion, to its spread, to its mystery, its attack on the body, to our losses during the Covid-19 pandemic and to our future beyond them. As the virus flooded every news outlet, Contagion became an interruption, a mysterious invader, taking over everything, needing to be expressed. It’s a “lifetrack” or “life soundtrack” with its contemporary classical orchestral sounds expressing the feelings and experiences of those first few months of dread and quarantine, through which many of us felt the fear of it all and the actual loss of loved ones.

Originally written for the award-winning short film, Consequence, The Doll Chronicles and previously released as a single, iBoogie is an improvisational boogie-woogie style song that was ultimately not included in the film as a cheesier, more canned, The Pick Up, better fit the final cut. It's included in the film's album as a bonus track.

The Consequence: The Doll Chronicles Soundtrack is the award-winning, original soundtrack from the award-winning short film from Franco Esteve’s The Doll Chronicles series. Like other films in the series, it’s silent and experimental, utilizing music to drive the story of Doll, who falls in love with the wrong man, and makes some wrong choices. Doll is a girl having drinks with her friends at a holiday bar. She meets Ken and falls in love. He introduces her to drugs and consequences ensue.

The process for creating the music for my silent films is one of exploration, which is why I’m so drawn to that process. While creating this particular score, I found myself exploring different styles and genres, settling for a cheesier, canned style for The Pick Up, and creating and performing a heavier, rock style for You’re Mine Now. Though the film starts with Dark Theater, which is the series theme, The Road to Darkness is the true theme and what I envisioned as the tone of the film, which is why I used it in the trailer. It was composed as an ongoing loop, but it was only used as a singular piece (try it as a loop and you’ll understand).

As with the Paranoia, The Doll Chronicles soundtrack, the album includes the Complete Film Audio so that you can experience it as the full film piece it was conceived to be. It also includes iBoogie as a bonus track. Previously released as a single, it was actually originally written for this particular film and is played in an improvisational style that fit the original idea, but in the end didn’t quite work in the final cut. A Moment of Madness

Weirdly Bent is an experimental, minimalist ambient song that expresses that slight bending of reality one might experience throughout one’s life as one confronts certain situations or goes through certain experiences. The music bends. It bends the thought and the self. It’s experimental, weird, slightly floaty, trippy even, yet deeply expressive and direct. The beautiful, mind-bending, minimalist melody seems to harken back to a classic, wonderful, guitar bending simplicity mixed with what some might say is influenced by classic sci-fi soundtracks.

As I explored ways to play with different sounds, guitars, and other instruments, bending and breaking things, composing the soundtracks for different projects, and specifically for Mallorca 360’s Season 4 and for the Fragments of Madness film series, I found myself drawn into this peculiar musical language and just went with it. It certainly felt in line with what I felt as I composed it and performed it, telling a story that transcends the moment and bends beyond it. With each bending, one’s own projected moment adapts to one’s own story and experience. It evokes feelings that connect the listener to its more classic influences, helping to transport the listener into a weird, relaxing & nostalgia inducing past-present-future kind of state.

Weirdly Bent

Reflecting the dreamy Mediterranean waters, skies, and sunsets of Mallorca’s coastline, Seaside Wonder is an ambient song originally created for Mallorca 360’s Season 4 Soundtrack that evokes that feeling of floating that one feels as one sits by the seaside engulfed by the views of Mallorca’s crystalline, blue, glistening Mediterranean waters and spectacular clear blue skies and sunsets. The beautiful sounds of the music transport you to that reality and beyond, allowing you to experience the gorgeous locations both through virtual reality and in your mind, in a dreamy, relaxing and soothing way.

As I explored ways to play with different sounds, guitars, and other instruments, bending and breaking things, working on and composing the soundtrack for Mallorca 360’s projects, videos and experiences, I looked for sounds that could convey some of the feelings and story of these gorgeous, Mediterranean locations. Many of these places are like a dream, almost unreal in their beauty, especially some of those seaside locations both during those clear sky and crystalline blue water days, but also during those moonlit nights. Guitar strings and orchestral strings mix with flutes and other surreal sounds to transport the listener into those worlds.

I hope y’all enjoy relaxing and floating by the Mediterranean sea with Seaside Wonder. 😀

The Wait is a classical style piece of music that reflects waiting and anticipation. It was written out of insomnia and the constant incapacity to sleep. It’s something I have personally struggled with throughout my life, and I admit a lot of my ideas flow from those hours fighting with it. The Wait is directly related to it, born of it. It’s that anxious waiting for sleep to come, the time ticking away, the realization that time is passing and the possible sleep time lessens. Suddenly, you feel it, but it disappears once again, and the anxiousness returns.

The different orchestral elements attempt to reflect that, with the violin’s pizzicato ticking away, as other elements creep in, and the mind races in the darkness. It features violins, cello, horns, and a rainstick to tell the story of that struggle with insomnia. For me it expresses that story. For you, it might express something different. It might inspire one of my films or stories, or one of yours.

I hope you enjoy The Wait and all my music, and may you always enjoy the deep and pleasurable slumber of a good night’s sleep.

Franco Esteve's The Ed Tyll Show Artist in Showcase Interview August 1st, 2017

Born in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, Franco Esteve is as varied as they come. His multicultural upbringing throughout the United States and Europe led to his adoption of the concept of everywhere and nowhere for his views of life, origin, and culture. The same has applied to his professional life as well, covering a multitude of disciplines, feeding his thirst for knowledge and expression.
