In this interview, Deborah Bird Rose discusses her life and work, looking back on some of her key influences and most significant contributions to scholarship. The interview was recorded at her home in Picnic Point, NSW, Australia on 26 September 2018. It was conducted by Thom van Dooren and edited by Jane Ulman.

Trained as an anthropologist, over the course of her career Debbie made major contributions in a range of fields, from the environmental humanities, and the anthropology of Indigenous Australia, to extinction studies, animal and multispecies studies, and philosophies of ethics, justice, religion, temporality, and place. Across all of this work she consistently explored the way in which processes of colonisation, modernisation, and development produce ramifying patterns of unequal loss, destruction, disavowal, and death. Debbie published many widely read, prize winning, and often reprinted books, including: Hidden Histories (1991), Dingo Makes Us Human (1992), Nourishing Terrains (1996), Country of the Heart (2002), Reports from a Wild Country (2004), and Wild Dog Dreaming (2011). At the time of her death, she had just completed work on a final book, Shimmer, which explores the entangled lives and deaths of humans and flying-foxes in Australia (2021).

This rooted listening session took place close to the tree line in subarctic Finland during the Bioart Society Field_Notes project in September 2023. This recording is for Teemu who was there with me to witness this expressive willow tree.

Melting Point explores both the human experience and musicality of ice as it melts.

This "composed feature" by Nina Perry explores the icy landscapes of Greenland, Iceland and the Highlands of Scotland through recordings of environmental sounds, interviews with people going about their day to day lives and gathered music that expresses cultural and emotional connections to the weather.

The winter thaw into spring is a time most often associated with renewal and hope, yet paradoxically in light of climate change melting ice has taken on the more ominous connotation of disappearing ice mass and rising sea levels.

Among the voices heard are an Icelandic writer, a Greenlandic fisherman, a drama therapist for whom an ice cube provides a telling metaphor and an ice-climbing fiddle-playing mountain rescuer from the Cairngorms. Their words are interwoven with spectacular recordings of the Greenland ice sheet as it calves and destroys and a specially composed musical soundscape to reveal the dichotomy and emotional resonance of the thaw.

I have a lot of technically good recordings of Blackbird singing, but they feel  rather clinical, somehow a bit out of context. Therefor I like this recording, with wind in old alder trees, other birds and some random noise from the background, but a nice and natural feeling of the Blackbird.  

Recorded in the grove with mostly old alders in Kivini village, middle in the Delta of River Kokemäenjoki, Pori Finland. A wonderful place, but not a place to make silent nature recordings.

To be listened with headphones, as all my recordings.

These are incredible, percussive sounds of two foxes in our back garden recorded 12/1/13 20:45. We don't often get foxes visiting our garden, but we saw 2 foxes exploring two mornings before this recording and one fox again the morning before.  Which might suggest a little forward planning?!

The recording was opportunistic through an open window with no time to even put in headphones!

In August 2020 there was a few days of some intense thunderstorms across the UK. On this particular day I put my microphone rig out under the cover of a large hedge outside my flat and recorded for several hours. For most of the recording the hedge was inhabited also by a robin, who sang softly throughout most of the storm. 

This is a short excerpt from that longer recording where I like the density of the rain, and where the song cuts through just enough. It was the middle of the day so you'll hear some traffic and other sounds of activity from where I live, at the edge of a city.

I wrote a piece with this title in lockdown 1, but when I came to record it, I ended up improvising something completely different. this is the result.

the birds will sing again

The Hawaiian Islands were once home to an incredible diversity of terrestrial snails, one of the most diverse assemblages to be found anywhere on earth. Today, the vast majority of these species are gone and most of those that remain are threatened with extinction. This audio documentary tells the story of the ongoing decline and local efforts to prevent it, including the creation of captive populations of snails in the laboratory and behind an elaborate predator-proof fence in the forest. Within a rich soundscape it weaves together the insights of conservationists, Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners, museum curators, and others to convey the significance of these often-disregarded creatures. One key aspect of this significance lies in the cultural associations of snails for Hawaiians, associations which are tied strongly to the traditional understanding that these animals sing in the forest at night. According to most biologists, however, snails have no vocal cords and therefore cannot sing – at least not in the conventional sense of this term. This program explores this perplexing situation, ultimately concluding that like so much else about these remarkable, disappearing, creatures, their singing must remain something of a mystery.

The disappearing voice of the forest: Snail stories from Hawai'i

Urban nature is often overlooked despite the majority of us living in towns and cities, so the focus of these recordings is Nature in the City, well particularly in the suburbs of Ham and Petersham in the London Borough of Richmond. Here, you won’t find any recordings of pristine wilderness. There will always be human noise: an overhead plane, the general hum of traffic, an occasional bad gear change, screeching of brakes, or an emergency siren, but hopefully you will also find sounds of a city alive with nature.
