Black Masala released Afterglow in 2020, and are now set to release the DJ Love synth breaks remix of the tune. DJ Love has been producing and remixing hip-hop, breaks and jungle for over 30 years now, releasing on his own Stellar Music label as well as Air Recordings, Fort Knox Recordings and Funk Weapons, among others. The Dallas based DJ brings all of this experience to the table as he chops up the original Afterglow with dub effects on the vocals, pulsing synths and some funky breakbeats. DJ Love's remix shines a whole new light on Afterglow, and transforms this into a fun dance tune.

It’s 2008 and breaks is booming! At the forefront of the scene were a trio known as Aquasky aka Brent Newitt, Kieron Bailey and Dave Wallace. With releases on many, many respected labels and djing all over the world, they really were pioneers of the scene in what what was a bloody exciting time in music.

13 years on and a lot has changed. Brent now runs a series of labels on the Jungle Scene (Vinyl Fanatiks) repressing old tunes as well as new. When Global Breaks Festival asked him to come out of retirement and do a set, how could he say no!

So here it is folks in all it’s glory. 1 hour of classics from back in the day. Bursting full of nostalgia, this is our 6th Day of Christmas!

Vandal aka Sam Evans was a pioneering Tech Funk producer and DJ with a bunch of releases on such labels as LOT49, Global Underground, Plastic Raygun, and U&A. His Punk Rock attitude to the music and scene has seen him play all over the world and gain a large fan base in the mid 2000's. This DJ mix was a promo that got sent to me back in 2008.

LBJ (Lazy Bones Jones) aka DJ Jonas Verwijnen Started his musical career playing in several Helsinki bands and began his LBJ electronic music project back in 1998. LBJ's style was a unique mix of live instruments, Finnish vocals, powerful beats huge, bass and dub breaks, and awesome atmospherics, all combing into a new sound that was refreshingly different from the normal London breaks sound at that time.

LBJ had also played with DJ's including Rennie Pilgrem, Krafty Kuts, Vini (RIP), Stanton Warriors, Jay Cunning, Soto, Chris Carter, Databass, Atomic Hooligan, Freq Nasty, Kraymon, Evil 9, Friendly, and Iain Taylor.

This DJ mix is more of a Tech Funk influenced mix with some great breaks layed on top.

READ THIS!!!!! MCA DAY - 8.08.15 - Rob Gee and I were very excited about this and thankful we could take part in this tribute to The Beastie Boys. Many friends were curious to hear what we were going to play. The venue couldn't handle the amount of people that "Turnt" up. The organizers of MCA DAY are AWESOME people. The staff? Awesome. The crowd A W E S O M E. The people who played? AWESOME. The stage manager was the only person who I was disappointed with. A lot of
people wanted to see Lords Of Brooklyn perform after DMC, and nobody cared about the schedule.   The stage manager did nothing but complain.  Ricky Powell's dedication went 20 minutes over and instead of doing his job, he got rude with us, shoeing us off, going "Clear".....WTF???? This event was not about Rob and I, but about a fallen soldier, MCA. So we threw in the towel. What would have happened actually did in New Jersey at a festival called FARMBLAST.
I wasn't supposed to do the tribute there, but WOW, it was freaking insane. Rob did his "GEE-Isms" over these custom crafted creations and everyone loved it. It was a lot of fun. What the Soundcloud features are the "Unmixed" cuts which was created for the show. Minds would have melted in Brooklyn. Not that seeing DMC perform "Mary Mary" by himself was a problem, he was A W E S O M E too.....
It's just that fading war stories from an open mic session vs. what we would have played... Well see for yourself.

Breakspoll the International Breakbeat Awards ended back in 2015, did breaks end in that time ? (I don't think so). These mixes are from the Breakspoll Awards back in 2006 and were sent to me by a like minded person from Spain just recently. These mixes were played on the Annie Nightingale show back in 2006. Many thanks to my Spanish friend for these, lots more to come from his archives over the following months .....

Back to the origins of Breaks - Big Beat!

Big Beat & Breaks Set

"Call It Techno" was the blueprint track which was written on June 4, 1989.  It was at the forefront of European Rave Culture and became a well known track in the U.K. & Germany.  The documentary "We Call It Techno" explains it right from the beginning and from that came the second & third Love Parade themes being named "The Future Is Ours" off the XL/Citibeat LP by Musto & Bones.  And "My House Is Your House" from the Break Boys which was Frankie Bones aka on Fourth Floor Records in 1990.

Frankie became the American Pioneer of Rave Culture on both coasts in 1990, playing Techno as a movement.  The Peace, Love, Unity Movement which in 1993 became PLUR after a fight broke out at an event in The Bronx which had Richie Hawtin as it's headliner.

And the rest is history.  If words can paint the picture here, the first 5 Soundcloud links will describe a DJ who has a journey of a lifetime & still is active in 2024.  The music that comes from the heart & soul of the Brooklyn Underground.
