Movement 1, “Cities,” is a musical representation of the hustle and bustle of the city, with mechanical, driving, high-energy and face-paced rhythms dominating a bebop style music. The middle ballad presents the quartet as the feature ensemble of the performance, showcasing the trumpet soloist’s range and lyricism.

Movement 2, “Coasts,” showcases the qualities of the voice, with the vocal soloist and choir at the forefront of the orchestration. The movement expresses as moods the two primary experiences of our time on the coast, the waves and the rain. Aleatory, body percussion, and extended techniques throughout the ensembles recreate the natural environment inside the lush, expressive music. The choirs sing Lakota words for “rain” and “waves,” as the soloust sings Nez Perce words, written by Julia Keefe. 

2. Coasts (Oregon Suite)

Movement 3, “Mountains,” has two distinct sections: the first half is Delbert Anderson’s “Narbona,” specifically requested by the commissioners, rearranged for this unique instrumentation; the second half is a primitive, almost barbaric groove that steadily builds in complexity and tempo, before fusing with the themes of “Narbona” in a mysterious conclusion. The choir sings the Diné word “Narbona” throughout.

Movement 4, “Forests,” hones in one the quartet and vocal soloist in an open jam improvisation, evoking the vast, yet intimate and intricate feeling of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, and reminiscing on the jam session shared with Esperanza Spalding during the planning residency.

Movement 5, “Deserts,” features the drum set solo prominently, with a quasi Bossa Nova style depiction of the deserts framing an ethereal choral depiction of the desert mirages, where the choir sings in Lakota words for “desert” and “earth/land.”

The Road

Franklin Piland (b. 1990, he/him) is an American Indian conductor of wind bands, an active music educator, and a composer of contemporary music.

Franklin earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Performance (Winds and Percussion) from Eastern New Mexico University in 2013 and his Master of Music in Music Composition from The University of Texas at Austin in 2016. He has minors and special studies in music composition, music technology, and wind band conducting.

Piland remains active in many diverse facets of the music industry, including composition, education, performance, administration, production, rehearsing/directing, coaching, and clinic-ing ensembles, music, or directors seeking mentorship. Despite all of his numerous obligations and responsibilities, Franklin is a lover of tennis, painting, and Batman (though oddly enough he has yet to paint Batman playing tennis).
