Toronto’s Greg Gow kicks off 2024 for Rekids Special Projects.

Greg Gow’s ‘Soul Seek’ EP on Rekids Special Projects launches with ‘35 Fathoms’, a restrained house-meets-techno cut in which he imbues the machines with real funk and soul. As one of the biggest names in techno to come out of Canada, the Tronic, Planet-E, and SCI+TEC artist once again delivers a classy techno offering worthy of Radio Slave’s celebrated Rekids offshoot.

‘Soul Seek’ sees Gow channel both Detroit and the early Toronto rave scene, with the title track boasting chunky drums and silky smooth dub chords which drone stylishly under its steady top-end. ‘SleepingProphet’ then continues with slick grooves and dreamy synth work before dancefloor anthem ‘Pocket Lighter’ closes affairs with Greg Gow calling in an iconic vocal, rich melody and chugging, shaking drums.

Robert & Lyric Hood’s globally revered house and techno project, Floorplan, return to Luke Solomon’s Classic imprint with ‘Like Dat’. As an early member of Detroit’s Underground Resistance, Robert Hood understands what it is to be the vanguard of a genre, now celebrating his faith through gospel inspired dance music with his daughter Lyric Hood. Together as Floorplan, the pair have built a strong relationship with Classic over the years, earning the respect of tastemakers like Seth Troxler, Dan Shake, TSHA and Jamie Jones thanks to their unmistakable gospel house and techno sound. Recent releases like UK radio favourite ‘We Give Thee Honor / Makes Me Wanna’ and underground cuts ‘The Curse Breaker / What You Need’ further proved Floorplan’s willingness to show their full talent at every turn. Now they continue this trend with ‘Like Dat’, a rolling house release built for the long club nights, accented by esoteric percussive sections and vocal stabs that cut through with ease.

Running Back and Hivern Discs artist Katerina debuts on Rekids with a dreamy house EP titled ‘One’, which features a remix from Aleksi Perälä. 

The title track of Katerina’s ‘One’ EP on Rekids starts off with bodied bass drums, rich analogue synthlines and soothing vocal-laced melodies. The Finnish-Bulgarian artist appears on Rekids following her 2023 Panorama Bar debut for the label, now adding Radio Slave’s imprint to her extensive discography on labels like Running Back, Hivern Discs, and Rhythm Section.

“This record was born out of the longing for emotional intimacy in a world of fast technology. There was a very natural flow to writing the music and the songs felt as if they wrote themselves. To be able to work with my all-time favourite Finnish artist, Aleksi Perälä, is a dream come true. Not only do I love his music, but his humane approach to life. We are one, and we shouldn't forget that. It's important to stop and be present not only for others but for yourself and the universe too.” - Katerina 

Fellow Finnish artist & international scene legend Aleksi Perälä then joins Katerina’s ‘One’ EP for the remix. Known for his imaginative sound design work on Clone, Trip, Rephlex and his own AP Musik label, Perälä turns ‘One’ into an equally whimsical, continually evolving dance trip. Dream-like keys trickle over rolling drums in his version before Katerina’s ‘Papu’ introduces the B-side, featuring a set of wonky chords played over an earworm bassline. ‘Look Into My Eyes’ is up last with gorgeous dubbed-out sonics, deep low-end and more after-hour melodies, closing out this irresistible addition to the Rekids family. 

This is another artfully crafted excursion through house and electronica from Katerina.

DJ, producer, promoter, composer, and cultural agitator Man Power makes his debut on Radio Slave’s Rekids with ‘We Trawl The Hurts’ featuring Louisahhh on 12th April. The first fruits of a long-term friendship see Man Power (Me Me Me/Throne of Blood/Optimo) serving up a stomping, big-room cut that tips its hat to late-90s NY house and serves as a bed for the inimitable Louisahhh’s (RAAR) breathy vocal delivery of classic Prefab Sprout lyrics.

“I realised that I never set out to make a "Banger", so I started sharing daily WIPs on Twitter/X of me attempting to do so, with notes on why I'd made certain decisions or changed certain things. The results were a shock and it felt like I'd managed to do what I set out to do, but I felt it needed an additional element. I've wanted to do something with Louisahhh for forever and the idea of asking her to cover that as a vocal element just arrived in my head fully formed. It's one of the few occasions making music where I've had an idea and the execution has turned out exactly as it was in my head when I first thought of it” - Man Power

Energy 52's Café Del Mar is one of the most iconic tracks in dance music. Released in 1993, this instrumental trance anthem was named after the famous beach bar on the Balearic island, becoming synonymous with the euphoric, sun-soaked vibe of Ibiza's dance culture. Crafted by German DJs Kid Paul and Cosmic Baby, the track's mesmerizing melodies and uplifting harmonies encapsulate the quintessential sunset moment, making it a staple in the sets of DJs worldwide.

Its enduring appeal is reflected in its impressive chart performance and numerous re-releases and remixes by leading artists, ensu- ring its presence in dance music culture across decades. Over the years, Café Del Mar has achieved legendary status, regularly featuring in lists of the greatest dance tracks of all time. 
Notably, it was voted No. 1 in Mixmag's 2001 list of the "Top 100 Tunes of All Time," highlighting its almost unparalleled impact on the dance music landscape. To put it simply, Café Del Mar is a cultural phenomenon, encapsulating the spirit of an era and influencing generations of artists and fans alike.

Now this iconic track is being remixed by two of the most revered acts in electronic music, Orbital and Michael Mayer.

Orbital, the pioneering British electronic dance duo consisting of brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll, have continued to shape the electronic music scene since their emergence in 1989. Known for their innovative live performances and seminal tracks like "Halcyon + On + On," they've significantly influenced techno and electronic music. In 2024, Orbital maintained their relevance by releasing a critically acclaimed album and embarking on a global tour, showcasing their ability to blend contemporary electronic sounds with their signature style.

Their sustained creativity and adaptability underscore a legacy that bridges the early rave scene with today's electronic music landscape, solidifying their status as enduring icons in the genre.

Orbital's remix is an ode to the golden age of rave, with clattering breakbeats and an ethereal synth line pulsing through its early stages before the iconic lead warps into view. They preserve the iconic, hair-raising breakdown before landing on the other side in a flurry of synths, scything percussion and a punishing 4/4 beat.
A key figure in Cologne's electronic scene, Michael Mayer co-founded the influential Kompakt label, contributing significantly to its direction and success. His discography includes seminal albums such as "Neuhouse" (1998), "Immer" (2002), and more recent works like "Higher" (2020) and "Connecting the Dots" (2021). Known for his meticulous remixes and collaborations with artists like Superpitcher and Kölsch, Mayer's work spans genres, touching on microhouse, experimental, and ambient techno. Beyond producing, Mayer's mix CDs, including contributions to the Fabric and DJ-Kicks series, highlight his broad musical taste and ability to curate pioneering sounds.

For his interpretation, Mayer leans into head spinning, hypnotic rhythms, with tribal drums and the patiently evolving lead line building towards a climax that is more subtle but no less effective.
