Before the year comes to an end, the respected Bolivia/France-based label HEARec found some time to add another solid release to their eclectic and rich catalogue: “Acid Jungle” is the new episode in the history of the skilled and promising duo Dos Locos. Hailing from Tel Aviv, their well-received previous works published on New Day Everyday, Ritual, and Maccabi House tell a lot about them: The lads do like acid!

Fusing elements from many a genre, mainly House, Techno, and Trance, their sonority is fully devoted to delivering an energetic and frenzied message to the dance floor through well-constructed and creative cuts.

The track we were solicited to review/premiere follows the successful recipe and presents itself wrapped with a mind-blowing peak-time coat and a Blade-like aura. The acid layer is simply insane and brings back good recollections from our rave time back in the day.

PREMIERE – CT Kidobo – Racing Thoughts (Bordello)

“Feel The Love” by Blavatsky & Tolley is coming soon on When Disco Goes Wrong. Old-time ravers, still hot in their game, couldn’t choose a better outlet to host their freshest creation. Curated by Mårten “Mindbender” Attling (BANDCAMP003) and Janne “Högt I Tak” Berglund (SXDNS179), two representatives of the early days of the Swedish underground music scene, the imprint is definitely the place to be for the fans of the good ol’ times out there.

Besides the compelling original, the EP also brings three remixes made with love by the label bosses themselves and a special guest, Adrián Calystarr, for his third appearance on WDGR. The latter, the chosen one to review/premiere.

With well-received pieces published on Golden Soul, Espacio Cielo, and When Disco Goes Wrong itself, the Spanish producer likes darkness mixed with psychedelia, an interesting combination that has drawn attention amid the so-called Indie Dance/Dark Disco scene. He repeats the formula, turboing it with shards of Trance, for his version of Blavatsky & Tolley’s single, delivering a deep and progressive interpretation.

Although he is not a newcomer as a DJ and has been stirring up the nights in Valencia and Benidorm for years, Mennez makes his debut as a producer with "Smooth Transition". An EP in which the Valencian demonstrates his musical concerns, ranging from sounds closer to tech-house to indie dance and acid sequences.

In the remixes, in addition to Parissior, head of the label, we find this collaborative version of the Italian Futuristant and the Spanish Moo Moonster, who perfectly capture a mix of the characteristic sound of each one: Indie Dance and EBM.

It was May 2017 when Earthboogie’s debut release dropped on Leng. The soundsystem-loving East London duo rightly won praise for a fine EP that brilliantly joined the dots between all things intergalactic, terrestrial and tribal.

Having spent the last ten months recording their adventures, Izaak Gray and Nicola Robinson return with “Silken Moon”, the first single from their forthcoming debut album, Human Call.

In typical fashion, “Silken Moon” cannily combines musical elements from a myriad of styles – most notably Afro-disco, samba and mid-tempo Chicago house – to create a humid hybrid that defies easy categorization. There are bouncy organ riffs, undulating acid lines, clipped Afro-funk guitars, tons of tropical percussion and the chanted, carnival-friendly vocalizations of guest singer Nina Miranda.

The release comes backed with remixes from two members of the extended Leng family: long-serving producer Felix Dickinson and Turkish rising star Ali Kuru. Dickinson sticks close to the original of “Silken Moon” with a mix built around gently jacking machine drums and Earthboogie’s sweaty guitar licks while Kuru takes “Human Call” in an altogether more cosmic direction. Pushing the track’s psychedelic TB-303 lines and tropical textures to the fore whilst adding his own mind-altering electronics – most notably a fat new synth bassline – Kuru cleverly re-casts the track as a pulsating, late night throb-job.

If you’ve visited Ibiza in the last few years, there’s a fair chance you’ll have encountered DJ Pippi and Willie Graff. The experienced duo has been DJing together on the White Isle for years, finding time between sundown sets to make music together in Italian veteran Pippi’s home studio.

The pair’s first collaborative EP dropped on Drumpoet Community way back in 2007, with the belated follow-up appearing a decade later on Compost Disco. Here they make their bow on Leng with the “Lunares EP”, a typically warm and woozy collection of cuts named after the Spanish word for “polka dots” (a fashionable item in Spain and the Balearic islands throughout the 1980s).

They begin with the slow-burn sunrise bliss of “Lunares”, a shuffling and glassy-eyed affair in which evocative, emotion-rich strings, heady vocal samples, echoing sitars and lilting guitars slowly rise above a thickset backing track rich in dubby bass, swelling pads, starry electronics and snappy drums. Capable of tugging at the heartstrings, it’s a sublime slab of mood-enhancing bliss perfect for both weary dancing and sofa-bound relaxation.

“Island Visitors” is, if anything, even more spaced-out and intoxicating. Employing extra-slow beats and a prominent jazzy bass guitar part, the pair invites us to get locked in to a chuggy rhythm. Throw in druggy synth lines, tactile electric piano stabs and some suitably cosmic effects and you have a hallucinatory treat that would no doubt have gained the approval of the late, great Andrew Weatherall.

The EP’s final musical moment “Saxolicious” lives up to the premise of the title, with Pippi and Willie wrapping snaking, effects-laden saxophone solos around a languid, slow motion groove bristling with hazy intent. Expect chiming electric piano chords, dreamy pads, rolling grooves and another fine bassline that will worm its way into your subconscious, spark up a spliff and stay there for days.

Residentes Balearicos is a new project founded by Luca Averna and Ale Doretto, both resident DJs in Ibiza and both hailing from Venice, Italy.

Together, they make music that tries to capture the amorphous energy of Ibiza, sizzling on sunny beaches, lulling through lounge conversations, and reaching palpable states in throbbing club nights before disseminating into the countryside air for replenishment.  

The project is based on a collaborative idea where Luca and Ale invite other artists from the island into the studio with the aim of sparking up new and fresh ideas for how Balearic music can sound, both within chillout and dancefloor disciplines.   

For Eivissenc, they were joined by DJ and producer Chris Coco. The music here is inscribed with the genesis of Residentes Balearicos: Luca’s flash of inspiration listening to old vinyl at the San Jordi Market and Ale and Chris’ help sculpting that idea into three radiant, highly danceable tracks.

Fred Berthet is this mysterious Frenchman known as DJ STEEF who produced slow & funky downtempo house tracks in the past years. Based in Marseille this quiet but not shy producer has built his way on many different projects since the early 90’s where it all started.
After composing singles with Antoine Boullé under the pseudonym Venus Attack Project (on the label US Guidance), he created the band known as Troublemakers with his friend Lionel Corsini & Arnaud Taillefert. After an over-welcomed first LP ("Doubts & Convictions" on Guidance rec) and well received worldwide, Concecration came on the second one on Blue Note (“Express Way”) pushing The Troublemakers at one of the top electronic band in the French scene.
Fred later on focused his attention on Copyshop project, influenced by the 80’s (Gomma, Toy Tonics, La Dame Noir, Numoment...). Producing now under DJ Steef its was the occasion to synthesize his musical roots such as 80’s electro pop, poisonous disco, classy french influences, insistent downtempo and up warding house. Fred has found in his alter ego DJ Steef the perfect combinasion of incredible fat, slow, funky downtempo house tracks that every body is so crazy about.Its not about fashion but clearly about style & thats why we all love his production stamped BIOMIX, in the shadows, under cover & simply outstanding.
