Wit Bad is the result of a beautiful collaborative project that started with illustrator Joost Stokhof. He was asked as an artist in residence for Amsterdam’s Hortus Botanicus, a place where Joost locked himself up for a week alongside the finest biodiversity in the city. Joost asked Eefje de visser to join him for a day and Eefje asked Nuno dos Santos to form a powerful trinity of which Wit Blad is the unmistakable evidence.

The original version was released in April of 2018 and we finally have a vinyl (only) version to go along with it. On the A side we find an 808 version, which is an extended version by Nuno of the ‘Wit Blad’ original. Zooming in on the drums and bass line while leaving even more space for Eefjes haunting voice. Eefje is one of Holland’s best kept music secrets, her voice is soothing and her presence like a siren song seducing you in. Immersing the music with field recordings, you can hear the birds and surroundings the piece was recorded and even some whispering voices that only add to the atmosphere.
Flipping to the other side we find our dear friend Mattheis remixing Wit Blad in a strong hypnotic vibe. Containing Mattheis’ trademark synth swirls, it’s as soothing as it is driving with spine tingling harmonics slowly creeping in and out.

This all comes packaged in a silkscreen printed cover containing the illustrations that Joost Stokhof made during their time together. The vinyl also includes a small poster including extra images by Joost and the lyrics of Wit Blad. Adding up to a beautiful feast for both the eyes and ears.

Madloch’s Sound Avenue imprint follows up their 100th release by welcoming Paula Os to the label for her first ever solo single ‘Pearl’. Born in Chile but now Buenos Aires based, Paula shot into the electronic music spotlight in 2016 with her vocal work on Jos & Eli’s ‘Walking On Water’. Released through long standing German imprint Einmusika, it set the course for what has been a remarkable two year stretch. Paula has since gone on to collaborate with some of progressive music’s most esteemed talents in Antrim and Kamilo Sanclemente. 2017 saw Sound Avenue label boss Madloch introduce Paula’s sublime vocals into his well received Magician On Duty single ‘Deserts & Snow’. A friendship and mutual respect developed between the two artists, eventually leading to the present with Paula’s first and much anticipated solo single coming courtesy of Sound Avenue, alongside remixes from Powel and Adam Nathan.

@tomdemac is no stranger to us, with well-played releases on Hypercolour, Electronique Audio and Glasstable, we were happy to offer him a home with Kompakt in 2018 thanks to a collaboration with Real Lies titled “White Flowers”. Tom returns to Kompakt, this time solo with the 3 tracker “Serenade” .

The title track is delicately brought together by a fragile piano rhythm and poetic wisdom over the might of the kick drum. Tom says its best that “Despite it being a little generic adding spoken word talking about music over actual music, the poetic nature of the delivery and description of the effects and emotions that music can bring, really worked with the piano I had written for this song.”

“Seventh Sign” was initially intended an experiment in cello recordings through an effects pedal but ended up being track brimming with pure techno groove. Second Skin is the perfect finale embracing epic elements of broken beat and even IDM sensibilities with a gorgeously misguided horn leading the march.

On Serenade, Tom Demac shows he has what it takes to reconfigure the vitality of what emotive techno can be. A central force that has kept the beat of Kompakt’s heart in rhythm since day one.

And right here. Flip it and keep on moving: Venq Tolep. A summer meadow, grass-stains, a gentle breeze, an early smell of hay. Venq Tolep. Endorphins tickle under the skin. A percussive spectacle, dance of the insects. Hopping around in flat shoes, the beat is phat and reverberated by a cluster of trees. Stabs on the e-piano set in, picturing the euphoric moment when Loving-feelings walk hand-in-hand with a Hint of Melancholy.

Since their first release as Extrawelt 'Soopertrack' dropped on Border Community in 2005 Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe have had a remarkable run. They relentlessly toured the world with their highly esteemed live show and released plenty of killer releases on labelslike Traum or Cocoon. Naturally, our ears were wide open when the Hamburg-based couple sent over a bunch of new productions to the KOMPAKT HQ. Announced as what they call a new, alternative path of production for them, more precisely "less computer, more hands on" we were directly intrigued by the power and rawness of their new sound.

In particular, two cuts stood out: 'PINK PANTHER' is pure analog funk. A sluggish beat is paired with a highly effective synth riff. The idea is as simple as it gets but it's executed in such a masterful way. You can drop this track anywhere and anytime - it'll certainly set things on fire right away. 'ARGONAUTS' follows an equally simple recipe but ups the tempo and energy levels by 100%. Heavy prime time saw toothtechno for the new generation that recall vintage Thomas P. Heckmann – perhaps if he were to wake up in a funky mood.

Watergate favourites Frankey & Sandrino make a timely debut on the club’s imprint, with a classy remix by Tiefschwarz in toe.

If you’ve found yourself at the Oberbaumbrücke institution on a Thursday in recent years, chances are Frankey & Sandrino were responsible for the soundtrack. The pair of Sandrino Tittel and Frank Beckers have captained the Thursdate residency since 2018, serving up a beguiling blend of deep grooves and twinkling chords progressions.

The four-track ‘Nova’ EP is the embodiment of this immersive sonic palette. ‘Chimes’ is built around a strong melodic lead that rises and falls throughout the lustrous seven-minute cut, as lilting pads and delicate drums patterns complete the work. The title track follows on, a delicious exploration into the deep, as subtle acid lines rub shoulders with meandering synths to build a masterful snake-like groove. Tiefschwarz’s remix of ‘Chimes’ brings heat to the package as the original is imbued with a muscular percussive heartbeat. ‘Black Hole’ is a sweeping composition made for the after-hours as a searing low- end synth is juxtaposed with an effervescent melody line to create an atmosphere-heavy finale.

We are both very happy to welcome back Marino Canal on Siamese. Everyone remembers his first record for us well, a timeless yet forward thinking and fresh release that's tough to beat. Marino made it possible though, his upcoming `Provenance` EP is a clear evolution of his style, mature, intelligent and ready for 2020.

'Curious Eyes' is the track we received first. We’re playing it since quite a while and it easily stood the test of time. Marino’s gift of creating energetic and powerful yet lush tracks is very unique and this song surely tells a story. Truly a great piece of modern dance music. 

Next is ‚Provenance‘, the title track of the EP. Similar to 'Curious Eyes‘ it starts gentle while giving the selector some time and space for mixing
and creating something artful while playing this out. As the deep and mellow chords soak you into the track the remaining layers are steering towards the climax where ‚Provenance' reveals its full potential. And before its even finished you want to hear it all over again.

'Dreamt of Tomorrow‘, the final cut of the release makes it even harder to pick a favorite and we're considering if we should have kept at least one track for the next
EP. Kidding aside, there’s nothing stopping Marino’s ever evolving expertise and this track resembles how a dream of tomorrow could feel like. Beauty, hope and kindness on one hand, madness, destruction and anger on the other. A perfect way to close a great record and there could be no better entry into 2020 for Siamese.

Marino Canal - Curious Eyes

After a busy year of touring and releases in 2019, Denis Horvat is proud to announce the launch of his new label for 2020. Enter: Vokabularium. The name, carried over from Horvat's latest Innervisions release, takes on a new life. The label aims to be an immersive, perpetual story. The first release on Vokabularium will be from Horvat himself, delivering a diverse 4 song EP titled, "Extensions of Base Notes".

 The EP's A side starts with "Interference", a track which weaves dissonant guitar tones with a dark, haunting storyline—an exploration of fresh sounds and energy. A2 brings us to "Patenta", a melodic anthem of sorts. A driving bass-line guides you through this peak hour journey nodding to Horvat's signature sound. As we flip to the B side, we begin with "WCS". Here, we enter a world of mystery. Patient build ups with eerie vocals make for great tension. The listener is drawn in closely before the sound expands to keep you guessing—drop all expectations. Finally, we arrive at the B2 track titled, "Paan". Paan opens with a spacious environment offering the listener a sense of hope. Chord stabs on top of a dense beat close the EP with an emotional finale.

The career of Ali Shirazinia, who has been innovating dance music under the name Dubfire for decades, proves that any artist can remain fresh and relevant through many phases of a given genre. The lead single off his ‘Lotus' EP is a pristine example as to why. 

This track sees Shirazinia explore a much more progressive, melodic sound than is his usual fare. What's more is he collaborated with a fellow legend, Carl Craig, in producing it. This release will be his first on Damian Lazarus’s Crosstown Rebels, after a well-documented friendship that goes back years.
