And Then There Were Three

This past December I was playing my flute into the early Sunday morning hours just before our first real snow of the winter began here in Ashburn, Virginia. 
 
As it started to snow I played back my improvisation and realized it seemed to be a nice introduction to the scene outside: light, dry flakes falling through the still air just before dawn.  It felt natural to call this one "Before the Snow."

Jim Gilliland makes wonderful Native American flutes.  He made the flute I'm playing here for me earlier this year.  

It's a low A (A3) flute in black bamboo.  It's 30.25 inches long with an inner diameter of 1.375 inches and an outer diameter of 1.625 inches.

It has an angled  mouthpiece that enters the back of the flute directly opposite the finger holes, so I hold it like a saxophone.  This makes this long flute (with a lot of distance between finger holes) easier to play.

As he was making it, Jim told me "...this flute has a big boy sound."  And he's right -- its tone is rich and deep, especially the low A.  I can make that low A warble if I position the bird in a certain way.

13 April 2015 - They seem to be a bit late this year.  It was a tough winter.  Other spring activities are in full swing -- cherry blossoms, kids at play.  You can hear happy voices and birdsong down below my open window.
