Kvitka was aka Casey Cisyk who was the voice of Ford for many years ("Have you driven a Ford lately?") and sang the original "You Light Up My Life" in the movie.  Debbie Boone got the Grammy after releasing it shortly thereafter.  Kvitka's version is definitely much better...

Marko Farion sings this humorous song about his broken clay pipe and how he was able to sweet talk a girl to buy him a new one at the market - and the hijinks that ensue.  This was recorded live at Town Hall in NYC in 1984, under the auspices of the Society of Ukrainian Bandurists.

Legendary bandurist Zinovij Shtokalko (1920-1968)was first recorded by Myron Surmach of Surma Records in NYC in 1952. Dr Shtokalko was regarded as the greatest bandurist of the 20th century.  Here he sings the duma (epic ballad) about Marusia Bohuslavka.

During the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus' 1983 East Coast Tour - its final tour with the legendary composer and director Hryhory Kytasty - they performed in NYC at Carnegie Hall on May 20, 1983.  Here soloists Roman Kassaraba and George Oryshkewych set the tone for freedom in this UBC classic penned by the legendary Hryhory Kytasty, posthumously named Hero of Ukraine.

During the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus' 1975 East Coast Tour with the legendary composer and director Hryhory Kytasty - they performed in Toronto at Queen Elizabeth Theater on May 25, 1975.  Here Yarema Cisaruk sings solo for Ward's America the Beautiful - arranged for choir and banduras by Hryhory Kytasty.

These two songs were recorded in 1935 by the State Bandurist Chorus of the Ukrainian SSR under the direction of M Mykhailiv, concertmaster H. Kytasty.  This 78 has two songs on this side (numbered 614): "A Myj Mylyj Umer" and the dance tune "Horlytsya" with solo on tsymbaly (hammer dulcimer) Andrejchyk.

These two songs were recorded in 1935 by the State Bandurist Chorus of the Ukrainian SSR under the direction of M Mykhailiv, concertmaster H. Kytasty. This 78 has two songs on this side (numbered 620): "Oj, Dzhyhune, Dzhyhune" and "Kucheriava Kateryna".

The award winning Detroit Concert Choir, fresh off their amazing win in 1996 in Llangollen, Wales as "Choir of the World", recorded a Christmas CD called "Silent Night" in 1997.  This selection is the well-known 'Carol of the Bells" recorded in its original form:  "Shchedrik" written by Mykola Leontovich, a Ukrainian composer who was beaten to death by Soviet thugs as a result of his Ukrainian folk and religious compositions and choral arrangements.

This popular song "Dearest Mother of Mine" is sung by Kvitka on her 1st release.  Kvitka Cisyk (aka Casey Cisyk) had two releases of all Ukrainian songs, but she is best known for her rendition of "You Light Up My Life" from the movie soundtrack of the same name (Debbie Boone covered that song a few years later).  For years she was the voice of the famous Ford Motor Company's jingle:  "Have you driven a Ford lately?".  She died at the young age of 44 from cancer in 1998.

From 1980-1984 Marko Farion wrote, engineered, produced and was the host for a community affairs program on Cleveland college radio WRUW 91.1 FM at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) called Free Ukraine.  It was sponsored by the Ukrainian Student Organization at CWRU and was an informative program teaching a non-Ukrainian public about the history, traditions, music and the struggle for freedom of the Ukrainian nation that at that time was still under the Soviet Socialist regime.  Here are some archival sounds from the show and some rare (currently unreleased on CD) songs that were popular in the early 80's.
