Letting It Be Easy: Anna's Freebirth With Her First Baby

Today, I'm talking with Anna from Sweden. As an RH negative, first-time mom, Anna was swept up in the fearmongering and control of the hospital system. Despite having what she thought at the time was a "natural" hospital birth, she entered motherhood feeling alone. A Finnish Freebirth

This week we have Emily, a former Labor &amp; Delivery nurse turned freebirthing-mother. After starting nursing school when she was pregnant with her first daughter, Emily quickly realized that licensure and hospital policies trump all else, and advocating for your patients can only go so far. Expanding in Pleasure through Pregnancy and Freebirth

We’re closing out an incredible Season 5 with Molly from France. After an unexpected pregnancy at a young age, Molly describes her traumatic birth with her first daughter as a "a second rape". She suffered physically, mentally, and emotionally, and promised herself she'd never give birth in a hospital again. With her second pregnancy, she dreamed of a freebirth, and with her third, she brought her dream to fruition-after removing herself from the spiral of medical pathology, and choosing a peaceful pregnancy. She gave her family the biggest gift- and birthed her daughter in full freedom. From Trauma to Triumph: Molly's Freebirth in France

This week I had the honor of talking with a personal hero of mine, midwife Marylou Singleton. Having found feminism at a very early age, Marylou set out on the path of supporting women and families. She has an eclectic and radical background, from living with and training under Ina May Gaskin, being licensed to now unlicensed, and running an alternative community clinic, Marylou possesses a wisdom of the elders that needs to be heard. We dive into the pitfalls of licensing, doulas, the dangers of ultrasound, and how to build community in our own backyards.&nbsp;

This week we have Stephanie’s story of freebirthing her twins. Stephanie explains that she would have much preferred to have had the presence of midwives but when she was risked out from the licensed midwifery practice, she was backed into a corner. She had to choose, either return to the hospital where she had been abused in her first birth, or stay home and have a normal family centered birth. And so... she did just that.

Today we are joined by Rose from the South Coast of New South Wales. After a fairly challenging and dramatic first home birth, Rose was dead set on not having another child for some time. On a trip back to Australia from the Caribbean where her partner was working, she discovered she was pregnant yet again. On the brink of Hurricane Irma, she was separated from her partner for many months, who got stuck in the Caribbean in the aftermath of the disastrous hurricane. Rosie stayed in Australia with family and decided to freebirth. She experienced a simple and painless ecstatic birth with her daughter. She also talks about having her toddler son at the birth, her regret of ultrasounds,, and the lessons she learned from both her births.

This week we are joined by Kate from New Hampshire, who free birthed both her children. Kate shares how she decided birthing independently with her first child was the safest decision for her family. In the telling of her birth stories, she tells us about how she cried on the phone to Ikea customer service in early labor in one birth, and went to a doula interview in the next! This week we have Debbie from Utah sharing the story of her first two births in captivity and then the freebirth of her third. After a mixed bag of experiences in the hospital with her first two, Debbie realized early in her third pregnancy that she wanted to have an unassisted childbirth. Using the tools of hypnobirthing and by way of lots of research, she got ready for an ecstatic birth. Debbie birthed just she had envisioned. Lastly she shares why she chose to go to the hospital after her birth and thankfully, had a positive experience.

Her first birth was sabotaged by her midwives, sending her into postpartum depression. "What You Wish A Big Sister Would've Told You": Emilee's Appearance on the Honey Talks Podcast

After a terrible first birth in the hospital, Laura knew she wouldn’t return. She resolved to freebirth at home with her second baby, and tell us of the awkward navigation it took being a military family choosing something so radical. Laura came to her own conclusion that to have a licensed midwife in a home birth would be bringing the hospital to her, which she did not want. What would have been a highly medicalized birth in the system, was a normal and ecstatic birth at home, even with her baby’s growth restriction and double nuchal cord. Laura then freebirthed her third child and tells us of her challenging recovery.

The Free Birth Podcast explores what it means to have full autonomy and choice during pregnancy and childbirth. In a technologically obsessed culture where obstetrics has taken over the managment of women's births in the last century, we now find ourselves with an epidemic of surgical births, countless traumatizing birth stories and a deeply imbedded resistance to the normalcy of birth. Pregnancy is treated as an illness and childbirth as an emergency from which women and babies need to be saved. 

Before there were doctors, even midwives, there was just...birth. Women have been successfully birthing healthy babies for as long as we have been alive. Birth is a normal physiological event that rarely needs true medical intervention. To free birth is typically associated with the term unassisted childbirth, meaning a person is choosing to birth without medical assistance and is managing her own care. It can also be extended to mean birthing freely within a medical model - if it's clear the pregnant mother is the leader. This podcast is a virtual corner of the universe to celebrate and validate the movement to reclaim birth as our own. Birth is not a medical event. Join us this year as we discuss legal and human rights in childbirth, investigate the different models of care, and hear from women around the world as they tell their stories of birthing freely. 

*Our intention with this podcast is to lift the voices of people making the decision to opt out of the default medical system and treat their pregnancy and birth as a non medical event, doing what they feel is safest for their babies. This podcast does not suggest that everyone should be seeking similar birthing choices, or that it is the right and only way, but rather to highlight that for some people who choose, free birth is a perfectly safe and viable option. There is enough room in this world for everyone's personal choices, in birth and beyond.
