From Lebanon to Palestine with Songs, Stones, Dances and Love. I want to Sing" were Souha Bechara's last words before her imminent execution. Held and tortured in the notorious Khiam Prison in occupied South Lebanon since she was 21. Souha would spend 10 years of her life behind bars in an Israelirun prison for her attempt to assassinate the murderous general of the South Lebanon Army; a militia which was funded by Israel. But Souha was never executed, as Israel retreated from South Lebanon after 23 years of occupation. Suddenly free, in a part of Lebanon that was as free as she. This set is a tribute to Freedom. This set is a tribute to the struggle for Liberation. This set is a singing homage to a land whose name is Filastin.

With softness she invites with ‘Striving for Light’, through a journey of poetical gestures, that showcase her fascination for electroacoustic music.

Funky Revolutions Special LIVE Broadcast from the Housing Justice Convergence March 8

Early this year, we reviewed Nour Sokhon's Beirut Birds, which Richard Allen found to be "teeming with urgency, ... an example of an album released at exactly the right time." Another recent record, Beyond All Borderlines, is an evocative collaboration fusing Sokhon's field recordings and electronics with piano improvisations from Montreal's Stefan Christoff, released on Ruptured. Late last year, that label released Yara Asmar's engrossing Stuttering Music, and we've been deeply impressed by their ongoing output, with some very exciting releases on the horizon. For this joint mix, regular mix contributor Christoff joins Ruptured label owner Ziad Nawfal to select and mix various songs with field recording contributions by Sokhon. The accompanying artwork is by Mexico City based artist Margarita Barros, who also created the cover art for Beyond All Borderlines. Happy Listening.

Ziad Nawfal, Nour Sokhon and Stefan Christoff presents Signals and connection

Our next guest is Stefan Christoff (@spirodon) a Montreal-based activist and artist active in various experimental musical projects revolving around the intersection of sound and activism, collaborating witv musicians from around the world, including Sound Dreams, Sam Shalabi, Lori Goldston and Anarchist Mountains. He also hosts Free City Radio (@freecityradio) on several Canadian radio stations and works with several cultural and social justice spaces in Montreal.

"Ottoman Grüw invited me to make a 1 hour mix for Operator Radio. It features works by friends in different corners of the world and also some recent collaborations, duets. The tone is wide, there are some wide spaces but also intense energy. I have gotten to know Jean (Ottoman Grüw) over the past couple of years, from doing work to mobilize artists to speak out in support of Palestinian human rights, to working together on a series of shows in Brussels. Under the vision of Sundus Abdul Hadi's Warchestra Art Collection, this album was produced by both the Narcicyst and Abdul Hadi as a sonic representation of the painting series. 

WARCHESTRA, Abdul Hadi's first comprehensive series, can be viewed as a commentary on media stereotyping and manipulation. By replacing weapons of war with musical instruments, the WARCHESTRA experience aims to re-imagine the media-saturated spaces of the Middle East, and Iraq in particular, through collage and sound. 

Trumpets trump AK-47’s, clarinets conquering RPG’s, blast walls torn down by zithers, grand pianos crashing from the sky instead of bombs, and tanks morphed into violins are just a few of the transformations this series has conceived. The ultimate goal of the WARCHESTRA series is to offer viewers and listeners a “re-imagined” insight into the Middle East through information, colours and sound. In the  instruments, there is an attempt to re-construct the rich history and cultural/musical heritage that was, before the War, and the hope for it's return to glory over the disparaging destruction of present time. Such is the WARCHESTRA experience.  Music Over Mayhem.
