Marcela is a proud Chilena, who was born 6 years after Augusto Pinochet left power and democracy was restored in Chile. She grew up knowing the dictatorship only in memory– as her parents recalled to her the fear and violence that controlled Chile for 17 years. Most days, she sees the visible marks of the dictatorship as she walks by memorial sites throughout the city of Santiago. Other days, she watches as the dictatorship resurrects before her eyes, fed by fear once again.

‘Falastin Zindabad 01’ a 3 hour sonic offering for grief, anger and action for collectively reimagining a free P@L35T1N3. Recorded live from the kiosk at Salon, Northdown Road, Margate, UK on Friday 7 June between 5-8pm as part of ‘WATCH US RISE’ a fundraiser organised by 101 social Thanet4Palestine & Salon Margate in support of Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.

Sonic scrolling from recent Instagram posts and stories on the ongoing g3n0c1d3 in P@L35T1N3 is layered with words and sounds from field recordings at the Red Fort, Delhi, India in 2019 during a day of protests and art against the rise of Hindu nationalism in India organised by Artists Unite; while mixing cries of freedom from K@5HM1R and other collected interviews and statements from a personal sonic archive, to attempt to show just how P@L35T1N3 and K@5HM1R are connected in their individual struggles for freedom from oppression, the former from z1oni5m, the latter from the rise of Hindutva. Music includes Dub Reggae, Hindustani Classical, P@L35T1N1@N hip-hop, Fairuz, Oum Kalthoum, archive tapes from Majazz Project as well as a special dub for freedom in Palestine and beyond by Indigenous Resistance

On the July, 2025 edition of the Art in Action interview series I highlight the work of artist and curator León De la Rosa-Carrillo who speaks on creating projects that address the persisting colonial dynamics and political imaginaries that surround the Mexico / U.S. colonial border line. In this interview León speaks on creating community based artistic spaces that address the ways that the borderline impacts Mexican artists and communities within the border region. León is a professor in the Art Department at Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez.

Shika Shika is very proud to present Mas Aya’s “Still, Flowing” - a 4-track EP that touches on themes such as family, intimacy and spiritual purposes, the title itself taken from a lecture by influential Buddhist monk Ajahn Chah.

Brandon Valdivia a.k.a. Mas Aya has emerged as one of the most prolific and respected musicians in Canada, working as a drummer and multi-instrumentalist over the past twenty years. He has worked with artists such as GRAMMY Award-nominated Lido Pimienta, Bomba Estereo, Not the Wind, Not the Flag, Laraaji, Sook-Yin Lee amongst others.

While influenced by many genres, the EP centres around ambient folklore with strong references to jazz and Caribbean music. Diverse percussion, polyrhythmic drums and ethereal flutes tie the music together, transmitting calm and rooted hope.

“Still, Flowing” begins with Capullo, a track that deals with themes of parenthood and family life, even containing a sample from Brandon’s daughter playing in the background during the COVID lockdown. The slowly developing piece lingers with a floaty Hip Hop beat and eventually morphs into an Afro-Cuban rhythmic coda. Featuring his partner and influential Canadian-based Colombian-born...  more
