Working under the moniker of doris dana, Colombian-born, Miami-based experimental sound artist, Mónica Mesa, aims to score the liminal space of mundane moments. Through the use of atmospheric drone hums overlaid with manipulated field recordings, processed voices, and dark electronics, doris dana honors the old ambient strategy of creating pieces that serve as soundtracks for imaginary films. These non-representational soundscapes convey characters of thought while the disjointed voices and environmental chatter suggest a life form presence as heard in their latest album release, sentimental atmospheres.

They have previously worked collaboratively with Domingo Castillo on the release of bad LSD trips under the labels Psychic Liberation and Enmossed, and most recently with Night Foundation on the forthcoming release of Za Za, a compilation of sonic improvisations that will be released in November by the record label,  Noir Age.

In celebration of the debut LP from Lafawndah, we invited her to provide us with the 56th mix in our Bleep Mix series.
Anyone who has heard Lafawndah’s previous releases - either her 2016 Warp EP Tan or 2018’s collaborative release with Midori Takada - will know that she is one of the most unique newcomers we’ve seen in years. However, the Egyptian-Iranian artist has outdone even our high expectations on her debut full-length Ancestor Boy. Released via Lafawndah’s own Concordia imprint, this is a record that both reinvigorates and reinvents experimental pop music while also breaking down stylistic, regional and cultural barriers.

This mix jumps everywhere from chopped n screwed trap to choir music to experimental breakbeat. Eclectic is an understatement.
