S&S Records, Inc. (and S&S Chicago, Inc.) was established by 4-time GRAMMY® nominated producer and House Music pioneer Steve "Silk" Hurley and global DJ/Producer Shannon "DJ Skip" Syas. Silk and Skip merged Hurley's worldwide commercial success and Syas' strong global following to form S&S Records.

Christopher Williams, a Virginia native, surfaced during the tail-end of the '80s, around the middle of the new jack swing era. His talents were not limited to those of a singer, but also an arranger, producer, and actor. "Talk to Myself" and "Promises, Promises," a pair of Billboard Top Ten R&B singles made with Timmy Gatling and Alton Wokie Stewart, marked his arrival. Those hits drove parent album Adventures in Paradise (1989), Williams' full-length debut for Geffen, to number 23 on the R&B album chart. 

Williams’ acting career began with New Jack City (1991), for which he was cast as an assistant to Wesley Snipes' lead character. Just as notably, Williams contributed "I'm Dreamin," a number one R&B hit, to the film's certified platinum soundtrack. The singer moved to the Uptown label for Changes (1992), an album that generated another Top Ten R&B hit in "Every Little Thing U Do,” along with the Devante Swing (Jodeci) produced top-20 classic, “All I See.”

Throughout his career, Christopher has followed in the tradition of robust soul vocalists such as Teddy Pendergrass, Jeffrey Osborne, and James "D Train" Williams. Ironically, his fondness for “D Train” was also shared by Chicago House Music Pioneer Steve Silk Hurley, Zonum from Spain, and Shannon “DJ Skip “ Syas of S&S Records. This lead to their creation of this remake of “D Train’s” “You’re The One For Me," featuring the vocals of Christopher and Carolyn Griffey.

Since 2001, Carolyn Griffey has been touring the world as the lead female vocalist of the Soul Funk supergroup, Shalamar featuring  Howard Hewett, Carolyn Griffey, and Jeffrey Daniels. She is the daughter of Carrie Lucas and Solar Records boss Dick Griffey, who worked with Don Cornelius in the creation and development of the television program, Soul Train. Carolyn grew up around The Whispers, Shalamar, Midnight Star, Dynasty, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and James Brown, who all appeared on Soul Train or who were signed to Solar Records.

Carolyn was signed to SOLAR Records as part of the dance-pop duo called ‘Absolute’. This group released one album, “For All Seasons.” Their first single was “Cheap Shot,” while “Gotta Lambada” and “This Moment In Time” both appeared on the movie soundtrack of Lambada.

A collaboration between Christopher Williams, Carolyn Griffey, Steve Silk Hurley, Zonum, and DJ Skip was bound to result in a tune built for the dance floor and the radio waves. “You’re The One For Me” retains the original soul and musicality of the “D Train” classic, and 40 years later, takes the timeless tune into 2020 with the S&S Original Vibe Mix and the S&S House Anthem Mix, both artfully mixed by 4-Time GRAMMY® Nominee and House Music Pioneer, Steve Silk Hurley.

In this episode of Behind The Decks, we checked in with DJ and producer Russell Small. 

Russell Small is the founder of two iconic UK house music groups, Phats & Small and later, the Freemasons.

The very first record Phats & Small  ever put out called ‘Turn Around’ in 1999 was a smash hit, peaking at number two on the UK singles chart and catapulted them both into international fame and stardom. 

They performed on Top of The Pops four times and went on global tours. Six years later, Russell founded another iconic house duo called the Freemasons which would reach those heights once more with a string of hits. 

A lot of these came on their album ‘Unmixed’, which contained singles including ‘Uninvited’, ‘Watchin’ and ‘Love On My Mind’ which still get played in clubs and on the radio today. 

This was then accompanied by a string of iconic remixes including ‘Work’ by Kelly Rowland, Beyonce’s ‘Green Light’ and Beyonce & Shakira's ‘Déjà vu’, the latter they were nominated for a Grammy award.

In this episode we chart Russell’s music journey, from DJing in a mobile disco around Brighton with his dad at school discos and youth clubs, to catapulting into stardom overnight, to remixing some of the biggest artists in the world. 

For Russell’s mental health, he lives with diagnosed ADHD which he was only diagnosed with during the Covid-19 lockdown. 

He was able to mask it his entire life but was labelled as a ‘dreamer’ and was told he wouldn’t amount to anything in school because of the way his ADHD presented itself and the lack of education and stigma around the condition at the time. 

We discuss the build-up to his ADHD diagnosis, how it felt when he was diagnosed, management tools he's developed since and finding balance in his life now.

With help from DNO P and Vincent M, Russell has come up with the perfect solo release to complement his Freemasons releases, a big piano hook and a vocal to die for. No surprise that it's currently on the A-list at Gaydio.  Now ‘Listen' is set for a full release in 2016 and a full remix package including re-rubs from Laurent Schark, Corey Craig, Emery Warman, Mike Twist & FYTA and W.H.A.T.A.M.I.  as well as a new tech house version by Russell, DNO P and Vincent M themselves that has been championed by Carl Cox.
