Pippa Breeze - Love Never Dies

This is a sample of my own music. It was all recorded in to Reaper using an Epiphone Les Paul into Guitar Rig 5 Pro and/or Amplitude 3, an Aria Pro II bass (both DI), and Native Instruments Abbey Road drums (no loops here, the drums were all written by me).

A combination of The Rocket, Bombardier, Density, Bootsy EQ, T-Racks and Ferric plug-ins (among others) were used to mix the tracks.

The songs were recorded as 24bit WAVs then mixed down to 320kbit MP3 prior to transcoding here.

Three part soundclip:

The sampled drums I used were Native Instruments Abbey Road 80s Drums. If you listen to part 3, the drums on their own, they may sound a little "out" at times - that is because I matched the original recording where the real drums were slightly out of time.

I only had the stereo recording of the song so the enhanced version has the original drums and the sampled drums aswell. I think that's ok as it preserved the original vibe as recorded as well as having the punchier sampled drums.

The original was not recorded with a click so it's not a case of just looping a beat - I had to manually locate each beat and move the sample to match it. If I had a drum track, this could be automated by locating the transients but here it had to be done by hand.

This shows how a recording where the drums sound a little flat or are just poorly recorded can be remixed with drum samples and yet still retains the life and soul of the recording. If you listen to just the drum samples at the end, I'm sure you will see how realistic the samples are. I applied some compression and EQ to the samples to fatten them up and allow them to cut through the original mix.

End of the Day - With drum samples

This soundclip shows a before and after, with drums being added to the original stereo mix. The original song was recorded as vocals and piano and the timing was a bit off here and there, which made adding the drums interesting. The remixed version also had a little extra eq and compression on the whole mix which brought out the vocals and allowed the drums to sit in the song a little better.

Whether or not the song is better with the drums is open to discussion but it changes the whole feel and gives the song an anchor, a solidity. It's a nice contrast.
