It’s with great pride (and a certain sense of defiance!) that Tom and I present
you with the 200th Freerange release. Despite the best efforts of three bankrupt
distributors, an arsonist (who set the Sony warehouse ablaze back in 2012) and a
volatile market, we retained the fire in our bellies, a stiff upper lip, and most
importantly an unrelenting passion for electronic music, we soldiered on and here
we are at Freerange 200!

To mark the occasion we wanted to put together a compilation of exclusive new
tracks from both long-standing Freerange regulars as well as some fresh artists
to the label whose music we’ve been loving. Being committed to vinyl we figured
the best way would be to do a two part release with four-tracks on each part.
Kicking things off we have my first original Jimpster track since Porchlight And
Rocking Chairs. Head Spin is a relentlessly chugging house track which puts
equal parts Disco, early House, Afro and Techno through the blender and out comes
a peaktime floor pleaser with a spring in its step and a lovely driving energy.
I’m really proud of this one and hope you love it too!

Next up we have Matt Masters teaming up with Pippo Ceretti on Xenophilia. We’re
like a couple of proud parents seeing how Matt has come on with his productions
and this brilliant slice of freaky, stripped back electronic house shows he’s
heading for big things.

Flip over for a very special track from Andy Hart, one of the Melbourne-based
producers helping to re-invent and reinvigorate the current house scene alongside
the likes of Harvey Sutherland, Fantastic Man and Andras Fox. Not only has Andy
managed to establish one of the most hotly tipped new labels (Voyage Recordings)
in the space of just two release, but he’s also been rocking it with his
productions on labels such as Heist and Sleazy Beats Black Ops and we’re very
happy to welcome him to Freerange with this sun-drenched slice of gorgeousness
called MYLNY.

Closing the first part we have long-standing Freerange regular Shur-i-kan
stepping up with his track Raindance and if your tastes edge towards the jazzier,
fusion end of House then you’ll be all over this one. Classic Shur-i-kan and
sounding lush as ever!

With Lukas Lehmann, a new face joins the footjob-squad. Out of his estimated 7.436 unfinished projects, he managed to complete three tracks, bag a remix and bundle it all up to what will hit the stores as 'This Is Why' EP. The A-Side kicks off with the discoish banger 'Q&H' and a beautiful synth-heavy remix by Lorenz Rhode - not only famous for his releases on Compost Records or Exploited but also for taking Detroit-Swindle-Liveshows to another level with his godlike keys-skills. The deeper side of Lukas' sound is represented on the B-Side. Starting with edgy piano chords, 'Solid/Fragile (Coexistence)' introduces an enchanting arpeggio midway through the track. With its distinctive strings, 'Nothing But A Heartache' makes for a semi-sentimental yet still hips-moving finisher.

Sweden’s favourite house label Local Talk return with a new LP compiled by one of the imprints most beloved artists Crackazat, and he has been given special permission remix and rework a selection of label's back catalogue for their edit's series.

Previous artists who have compiled a reworks album for the series include HNNY, Jacques Renault plus Kyodai, and this is perhaps one of the best yet.

Ben Jacobs better known to music fans as Crackazat, is a young talent originally from Bristol in the UK. Early in his career he was the official warm up act for Floating Points and he shares a similar sound fusing upbeat jazzy chords with house shuffling percussion.

Local Talk have become synonymous with breaking new talent such as HNNY that later goes onto achieve big things, and Crackazat is one such artist who has used the label as a spring board to kick start an accomplished career.

Crackazat has now featured tracks and remixes on other labels including Josh Wink's Ovum, Joey Negro's Z Records and Derrick Carter’s Classic. Early in his career he also released on the infamous Future Boogie, and a number of his Local Talk tracks have been licenced to prestigious compilations compiled by brands like Defected.

Featuring everyone from Terrence Parker to Soulphiction, the Local Talk back catalogue has original music from many of house music’s greatest artists who sit alongside fresh talent such as Jaxx Madicine and Marcel Lune.

Choosing tracks that he either loves of feels he can improve with a bit of careful editing, Crackazat has spent time hand picking a selection of tracks that showcase the Local Talk back catalogue in all its dazzling glory.

For those already familiar with some of the original versions on this release, it’s a fantastic chance to rediscover a classic in a revised format, and for those new to the label prepare to hear some of the best house music out there with strong influences from other genres such as jazz, funk and soul.

Cody Currie takes the bounciness and stabbing chords of Christian James' "The WHIP" and reworks the stems into a swinging, midtempo affair. A full and fun bassline keeps the track moving nicely between layered hats and some trademark vocal sample filtering by Currie. The remix is a nice compliment to the rest of the record, serving as a loose, low-slung alternative to the faster originals. It's always nice to see another American label taking flight in the wax game, and Nicewon is here to represent the NoCoast.

It's funny how things turn out sometimes. You set out do one thing and what comes out the other end is something altogether different. Cue Freerange Records…
 
What started life as a simple platform for one man to unleash his love of house on the unsuspecting public, has somehow transformed into one of the most revered independent dance music labels in the world. Not that he, or we, are complaining.
 
Kick-started in 1996, London based Freerange records is the brainchild of two close pals - Tom Roberts and Jamie Odell. To begin with, this shiny new sonic springboard was used solely by Jamie to indulge his two production monikers – Audiomontage and Jimpster. However, once he’d found his groove, the pair started searching for talent that shared their musical vision. Soon enough, they were joined by a selection of new artists who also had a vehement love of groove-based, soul-tinged house music that united the organic and electronic. Enter Shur-I-Kan, Andreas Saag (AKA Stateless & Swell Session), Switch, Only Freak, Palm Skin Productions and Trevor Loveys. In these guys, Jamie and Tom had not just found a tight-knit crew, but a succinct musical troupe – Freerange now had a truly identifiable sound. 
 
By the millenium their releases were popping up in the boxes of top jocks world over – Garnier, Bug, Richards, Middleton - the list goes on. Tracks like Get Ya Dub On, The Bounce, and Get on Downz suddenly became synonymous with the house music of the time and even more impressively, big records for DJs who were known for quite contrasting musical styles. Unbeknown to them they had helped kick start something of a mini revolution and suddenly found themselves at the forefront of a new  house movement.
 
Since then, the imprint just hasn't stopped turning heads. As well as welcoming yet more exciting talent into the family fold - something that the boys hold very dear - the label has excelled in drafting in poignant and on-song remixers to add spice to each and every package. Their colour series compilations – which periodically sum up their latest wares - are some of the most successful and sought after collections in modern day dance music which is definitely something to be proud of in such challenging times.
 
Alongside mainstays Jimpster, Shur-I-Kan and Manuel Tur the label now has the supremely skilled, Detroit Swindle, Pittsburgh Track Authority, Guillaume And The Coutu Dumonts and Hyenah under its wing; all of which are artists in the truest sense of the word.
