HISTORY OF THE FESTIVAL

The 1st annual U of N "Stage Band Festival" attracted five out-of-state bands with Buddy DeFranco as guest artist.
The 12th annual festival, March '73 attracted over 300 groups from 12 states, Canada and Mexico. Nearly 8,000 participants, 160 high school bands, 45 colleges, 70 vocal jazz ensembles, etc. were at "Reno Jazz '73".
Since that unauspicious beginning in 1962, the Reno Jazz Festival has grown into the nation's largest (Stan Kenton, Down Beat and others term it "the world's largest") educational jazz festival.
Although the state of Nevada had been a mecca for show band and jazz musicians from the 1930's, there was no educational jazz in the state until john Carrico, who was appointed to the University of Nevada faculty in 1959, organized, recruited and directed the first jazz ("stage band" was the "acceptable" euphemism at the time) program on the Reno campus.
In 1962 the Music Department engaged Gene Isaeff and Orville Fleming as lecturers. Thanks to these noted professional, the jazz program and festival grew rapidly into one of the first west coast jazz programs which produced the Nevada Concert jazz Band which was one of the five national finalists at the intercollegiate jazz festival in Miami Beach in 1967 along with North Texas State, Ohio State and others.
In 1963 the festival grew to 15 bands with Carl Fontana, trombonist, under the direction for the first time of Gene Isaeff. A special event was a concert by Harry James and his band, featuring Buddy Rich.
"Doc" Severinsen, now orchestra leader of the NBC-TV "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson, was the guest performer in 1964. Twenty-eight bands participated.
The 1965 festival attracted 36 bands with Louis Bellson, currently musical director of the Pearl Bailey show and husband of the noted personality, as the guest performer. Al Hirt and Sonny Payne made appearances.
Forty-eight bands were on hand in 1966 when Raoul Romero and jack Sheldon were featured. The University of Nevada Alumni Association trophies were awarded for the first time. South San Francisco high School, Warren C. Heckman, won the Alumni Grand Trophy.
Louis Bellson returned as guest artist in 1967 with 53 bands in attendance. Participants remember that 1967 was the year of the "big snow" - marooning hundreds of delighted student musicians in reno until Monday - with El Camino High School of South San Francisco under Ted Marr as the top winner.
The festival moved to the new Pioneer Theatre Auditorium in 1968 with 65 performing bands on hand. Guest composers-saxophonists Raoul Romero and Rick Davis brought stirring compositions and performances to a "standing room only" auditorium. Castro Valley, Elliott Charnow, director, won the Alumni Grand Trophy.
Don Ellis was the guest artist of the 1969 festival which enrolled 110 bands and 13 combos, making it by far the nation's largest school jazz festival. Nathan Hale High School of Seattle, Washington, directed by John F. Moawad, was the championship group.
At the 1970 festival, Joe Morello and Frank Rosolino were the star attractions. One hundred twenty bands and 16 combos participated. Nathan hale high School, under John F. Moawad, was the winner of the Alumni Grand Trophy for the second consecutive year.
Gary Burton was the 1971 guest artist at the festival which drew 150 bands and 7 vocal jazz groups. Roger E. Rickson's Corona band won top honors with Pacific, Nathan Hale and San Leandro as divisional winners. San Leandro later won the international festival in Montreux, Switzerland, over 11 other American high school bands, Ygnacio Valley later won the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1972.
Over 200 bands and vocal jazz groups particpated. Guest artists were Louis Bellson, Gary Barone, and Tom Scott. The sweepstakes winner was Nathan Hale under Frank Minear, hotly -contested by many other fine groups. Bonita later won the Monterey Jazz Festival while Ken-Meridian took top honors at the Northwest festival at Olympic College at Bremerton, Washington.
This year's festival will feature approximately 115 high school, twenty elementary-junior bands, 30 colleges-universities and twenty combos. New states include Alaska and Hawaii.

GUEST ARTISTS
ART PEPPER
Alto, Tenor Sax, Flute, Clarinet
It all began when Art Pepper was just nine and already learning to play the clarinet. At 12 he started learning alto sax too. And by the time he reached his teens, he was educating himself in after-hours sessions on Central Avenue, the mainstem of the Los Angeles black community. Here he was in such fine company as Dexter Gordon, Gerald Wiggins, Charles Mingus and Zoot Sims. By age 17 he moved up from the reed section of Benny Carter's big band to playing alto with Stan Kenton.
In 1947, with his military obligations behind him, Art Pepper was back with Stan Kenton, this time in the lead alto chair. By now he was playing solos with a style that was his alone. He left Stan Kenton's band and in almost no time he was the most sought-after altoist in the Los Angeles area. Though he never left the state, Pepper was internationally acclaimed for his artistry that had been featured on numerous solo recordings. he also did recordings with other celebrated artists like Mel Torme, Shorty Rogers, Shelly Manne, Barney Kessel, herb Ellis, Bill Perkins, the Condoli Brothers and Buddy Rich. He even got to do the soundtrack for the film "The Subterraneans", based on a Jack Kerouac novel and starring George Peppart and Leslie Caron.
Today, Art Pepper is touring the country, speaking and playing for students of music at countless colleges. And with over 30 years of distinguished experience behind him, Art Pepper can pay a lot of your own dues for you in just one educational, entertaining clinic.

BILLY MAY
Conductor, Arranger, Composer
A native of Pittsburgh, Bill found a free period in high school (at age 8 he tried two years of 25¢ piano lessons) so took "Intermediate Band" on tuba, then into a dance band, followed by learning trombone, bassoon, and taught himself to finger clarinet and flute. In 1935, out of high school, "I was coying Glen Gray's and Goodman's arrangements off records", says Billy.
Following Summer picnic dance jobs, and a number of dance bands (where he earned $1 for a pop arrangement, $3 for a standard), including a Lombardo-type group, Billy heard Charlie Barnet in 1938 and his first offer for an arrangement for Charlie resulted in ten arrangements (at $5.00). Billy later joined as trumpeter-arranger, during four arrangements per week (the classic "Cherokee" and "Pompton Turnpike" came out of this period).
Glenn Miller enticed Billy to play lead-jazz trumpet and arrange, doing six radio shows a week, and 30 arrangements in two years ("Ida", "Blues in the Night"). Next, he went to Alvino Rey, followed by trumpet work with Bing and Bob Crosby radio shows in Hollywood, and arranging for Ozzie Nelson, who forced Billy into conducting. He also wrote albums for Capitol Records ("Bozo the Clown" etc.), Arthur Murray albums (mixture of modern dance-band and Lunceford two-beat style) and Billy may albums with "slurping saxes" which became so popular he took his band on the road.
His awesome talent and his easygoing, almost offhand approach to that talent is stated by Pete Condoli: "May is probably the most natural genius in the field today ... but to him it's no big deal".
He has arranged and conducted for Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra, composed, arranged and conducted such TV series as "Naked City", "Batman", "Mod Squad", and most recently, "Emergency". (Bill says of the latter: "It's a nice job because lots of my music is covered with sirens and stuff"). Movie scores include "Sergeants Three" and "Johnny Cool".
Billy has written an alto concerto for the Reno jazz Festival and Art Pepper based on his "Naked City" theme.
With humorist Stan Freberg since 1951 ("A Green Christmas", etc.) has given him an opportunity to exercise his considerable musical wit. His interest in classical music (he studied under Ernest Toch) includes Alban Berg and Mahler.

Partially compiled from re-mastered and reworked versions of tracks previously included in the band’s self-released series of EPs, this new incarnation of The Cult Of Dom Keller’s sounds also features three unreleased recordings.
 
This is the absolute first time that these recordings become available on vinyl, a format that perfectly complements the band’s meticulously textured and carnal sound.
 
A collection of fuzzily enrapturing and lysergically tinged compositions with an electronically infused backbone, the band’s debut might appear as a slight deviation from Mannequin’s traditional aesthetics. We have no doubt though that our connoisseur audience will appreciate the novelty and will instantly fall for these stupefying songs.
