Black British Girlhood

As some of you may not be aware, September is sickle cell awareness month.

SCD affects 90,000 to 100,000 Americans.
SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 500 Black or African-American births.
SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 36,000 Hispanic-American births.
SCT occurs among about 1 in 12 Blacks or African Americans.

So I wrote a piece dedicated to raising awareness about sickle cell.

If there is one thing you do in aid of sickle cell, please let it be sharing this!!!

This is dedicated to my Sisters and my brother in-law who have sickle cell.
They are my inspiration because regardless of how many time it causes them pain or agony they never allow it to keep them down.

Family and Friends always ask why I don't write happy poems?, I guess this is my answer.

Why I don't write happy poems

People avoid talking about certain things, because they deem it too deep. I guess so much bad happens we have become disconnected, but I want us to reconnect and heal together. 



I AM FEAR...

Depression isn't spoken about enough, it's that taboo subject that people avoid. The problem is that in silencing conversation on depression, people who suffer from it are made to feel even lower than they already do. I know we all know someone who suffers from depression, but we may not know the extent to which it affects them. Most of the time the people who suffer from depression are the same people we see smiling on a regular basis... Why is that? Usually, it's because they don't think people will understand what they are going through; want to avoid being judged or avoid being the brunt of pity. So here is my letter to anyone suffering from DEPRESSION and SOCIAL ANXIETY. This is my way of saying I understand. I pray for a day when depression, anxiety and all mental illnesses no longer exist. However, I first and foremost pray for a day where society isn't what is keeping us mentally chained.

Growing up I've heard people talk about giving back to the broken down communities we grew up in, but sometimes when people 'MAKE IT' giving back to those communities is the last thing on their mind. Maybe it's just me but I can't imagine a home away from here - 'here' being South East London, but more than that I long to fix this area so it can be a better home for those who come after me. It takes a team to build a community. 

I Am Enchained

Domestic Violence is never ok! Recently, I've heard one too many stories and it completely saddens me to think people believe lovelies where violence and abuse exist. 

Domestic violence has a higher rate of repeat victimisation than any other crime. Globally, 1 in 3 women will experience violence at the hands of a male partner. On average, a woman is assaulted 35 times before her first call to the police.

In 90% of domestic violence incidents in family households, children were in the same or the next room. 
62% of children in households where domestic violence is happening are also directly harmed.

This here is one story, but I know there are much more that need to be shared. A lot more males and females that need to speak up.





I AM Embarrassed

Death is something we all know is guaranteed but losing someone can be so unexpected. Sometimes we are left in a state of regret because we never got to tell them we love them for the last time. Or the last conversation we had with them ended in such a bitter way.  

If you knew death was on the horizon for a love one what would your last words have been? & What do you think they'd have said back?



I Am Scarred

Cancer, the dreaded "C" word. It has become such an epidemic in our society that people are loath to even mention its name. Cancer is a disease that can affect many different parts of the body. Some of these diseases are more serious than others. It is not only the disease that is painful but also the many way of treating it. Radiation treatments may kill the cancer but are also dangerous for the body. Chemotherapy comes with many side effects such as hair loss and severe nausea. The many faces of this disease challenge an individual to show their fighting spirit and will to live.

I Am Pain

Emotional insecurity or simply insecurity is a feeling of general unease or nervousness that may be triggered by perceiving of oneself to be vulnerable or inferior in some way or a sense of vulnerability or instability which threatens one's self-image or ego. I find that 'there is no better feeling in life than overcoming insecurities and learning not to give a fuck.' You're Beautiful just as you are, believe that.

I AM Insecure

 My spoken word pieces are not only my way of setting myself free by expressing and voicing emotions and views on situations, circumstances and the world. It’s also my hope that by sharing myself, others will set themselves free too. Life is
