I’d sit beneath that old porch light,
Drop the needle, hum on nights.
Mama said the city shined,
But I found gold in old steel twine.
Sang along with every tune,
Dreamed the songs would find me soon.
Never thought I’d leave this land,
But life don’t always play your hand.
Country pretty in the big city,
Where concrete drowns but can’t take me.
Tried to change my sound, tried to steal my name,
But twang don’t bend, twang don’t fade.
