Serenata

Three Pieces is a collection of short, contrasting works for unaccompanied violin. The opening movement is spirited and virtuosic, with constant motion from start to finish. The second, titled Interlude, is gentle and nostalgic, foregrounding a simple pizzicato chord progression as its primary idea. The final movement, the most lyrical of the three, moves freely between emotions of anguish and introspection.

This work was premiered by Emily Shehi at Sprague Hall in New Haven, CT on March 9th, 2023.

Program Note:
Particularly popular during the Baroque period of Western Art Music, a chaconne is a dance form characterized by repeating harmonic progressions. My Two Chaconnes do not strictly follow the traditional form, and those familiar with famous examples in the repertoire (Bach, Brahms, and Webern come to mind) will note that these pieces sound nothing like the chaconnes of the past. Rather, they take inspiration from the form’s absolute devotion to harmony and repetition, investigating their own recurring harmonic patterns in a wide array of contrasting (and conflicting) emotions, styles, and orchestral colors.
