Deep Inside

It was a little over a year ago and my life was in the midst of changing. I had dropped out of college and taken a job at a new company. The uncertainty had crippled me creatively, and the things that had comforted me throughout my life were no longer doing so. I needed to evolve, but I did not yet grasp how true that was.

Once my friends got back from Burning Man and I was surrounded by their stories, energy, and creativity, I realized that I had become a cynic and a passive consumer of the culture around me. Everyone's desire to make and share inspired me to create and participate again.

The music that my friends shared particularly spoke to me. This music was inspired by global sounds - it took me out of the concrete prison I'd worked so hard to put myself in. The cultural isomorphisms of the rhythms, melodies, and instruments helped me realize how much bigger the world is. I saw the connection between eastern and latin sounds and finally saw my blood, my upbringing as a strength and not a disadvantage for the first time.

At that point, I began making music again.

I've taken a rather unorthodox approach to sharing it, however. Rather than disseminating songs on the internet, I've worked closely with friends to curate shared experiences. These include a midnight set for a small room of people during Wolf moon blizzard, organizing an intimate DIY festival at a farm with all my best friends, and DJing in a remote beach on the north shore of Oahu. My only desire is to contribute to my life and others in an active way.

And, although I mostly keep the few songs I make to myself (and a small group of friends), I now wish to share some with more people. Here is the fruit of that wish: two songs, "Lost In Translation."

I look forward to making the Black Rock City pilgrimage in a few weeks and find new life yet again...

the butterfly is a marvelous demonstration of the power within trust and vulnerability
and in the miracle of metamorphosis
after all, what is a butterfly if not the flowering of a caterpillar beyond its wildest dreams
emerging from the womb of the chrysalis
the butterfly discards its restrictive silken shell
to inherit a magical new world of flowers, breezes, and sunshine
a world of freedom and delight, and the celebration of its divine nature
spreading her wings for the first time, she has no idea whether she can fly
she simply opens her wings in perfect confidence
and is effortlessly conveyed into the spiral dance of graceful flight
and all that then remains is the joyous participation in the divine ecstasy of creation
as you turn your light inward
and witness your true nature
you become an empty mirror
and go beyond beliefs or doctrines
dissolving the veils the formless takes form
going or coming
we are on the right place
as the veils are lifted we will perceive worlds of unimaginable beauty
self-transforming astral worlds of light will shine down and interpenetrate the density of matter
making it translucent, less dense and more permeable to our thoughts and feelings
multi-dimensional reality and the interconnectedness of all things will be as clear as sunlight
and just as the light is not separate from the sun
and the wave is not separate from the ocean
so shall we realize our connection to the source
and recognize ourselves and each other

'Walking Tree' was written in the early 90s when I was living in a teepee in the forest. One day on my way to the spring the beech trees sang this song to me. I introduced it to the European Rainbow Family and it became very popular. It has been sung since then in international Rainbow Gatherings, festivals, kinder gardens, schools, universities and in ceremonies worldwide. The song has been translated into different languages. 

Today the Amazonian Rainforests are burning and this song is inviting us to remember more than ever that without the trees no life is possible for us on this planet. The forests are our lungs and the trees give us oxygen and breath of life besides food and medicine. 

The earth is our body and what we do to her we do to ourselves and the future generations. We cant afford to cut any more trees on this planet. It is suicidal and self-destructive. We are called to step into guardianship of the trees of life and the living earth for our children and the future generations.

I was honored and delighted to partner up with two amazing beings - Hannie Caron and Pascal vd Pol to create a special edition of Ecstatic Dance.

They held a sacred cacao ritual and then started our Ecstatic Dance journey by playing live instruments and singing.
I was amazed to see the range of instruments they brought and how excited by how they activated our beautiful participants. 

Then we transitioned to my Ecstatic Dance journey which focused on shamanic and sensual music.

or our delight, Indio Blanco presents to us a 6-track EP named "El Caracol y La Luna" that travels by distinct sonorities and moments of his career, highlighting the diversity on references that passed by the artist's fruition during the last decades. Indio Blanco is the new alias given to the multimedia project created by the Dutch pioneer and multifaceted artist Piet Jan Blauw.

Piet Jan started his career by combining and developing distinct techniques through his painting with water, oil-paint, etchings, silkscreens, jewelry ( silver, acrylic and rubber ), brass sculptures, and kinetic objects. He was a member of the artist union "BBK 69" (1970-1989). Also, Piet Jan lectured at the Folk High School in Bergen, the N.S. training school for teachers in Haarlem and the International Make-Up Art School in Cologne – Germany.

For the past five decades, he's been involved in several incredible projects with talents such as the Mexican pre-hispanic masterminds Jorge Reyes, Cheko Mosqueira and Alyosha Barreiro. In the Netherlands, he built partnerships with notorious deejays like DJ Isis and DJ Dimitri Kneppers and collaborations with avant-garde talents from around the globe.

Since the early 70s, Piet Jan Blauw started crafting and performing with interactive kinetic installations which became the foundation of his performances. These installations were quite substantial therefore the artist started to craft smaller sensorial sculptures and use them as instruments. He uses this signature technique until nowadays.
