Following quickly on the heels of ‘Strictly for the Ravers’ FreQ drops another dancefloor banger in the form of ‘Sub Marine’. Mining a similar vein at the intersection of Breaks, UKG, techno, and Bass Music this one takes a heavy bass line and welds it to a driving rhythm, interspersing it with stuttering techno stabs over top of a sparse arrangement that relies on the sonic impact of the mix to steer this deep sea vehicle to the drop. No one will accuse Mr. Nasty of being overly academic here - it’s just a sick banger with a FreQish twist, one for the dancefloor warriors. Bass line soldiers, salute!

FreQ Nasty’s ‘Strictly for the Ravers’ reaches back into the roots of the Breaks and Garage scenes as a launch platform to help blast the current wave of  90s-influenced rave music into the future. As a regular raver at Jah Shaka’s dub and reggae raves at the Brixton Rec in London and a willing participant in the explosion of Jungle, Breaks, and Garage in the late 90s and 2000s, FreQ Nasty has always been about Sound System culture. As all things Breaks and Garage enjoy a massive resurgence, ‘Strictly for the Ravers’  pays homage to that era - the raw funky beats, the high-energy basslines, the jump-up energy, and the sound system weight and attitude! 

Combining the swing of Garage, the intensity of Dubstep, and the rolling arrangement of Breaks, ‘‘Strictly for the Ravers’ lets you know exactly who the track is for. In the breakdown, a Reggae sound system MC calls it out from in front of a huge sound system at a crowded dance in the late 80s -  “We don't play funky,  we nah play soul, and we don’t play hip-hop - just strictly… FOR THE RAVING CREW!  

‘Strictly for the Ravers’ is the latest chapter in a journey that began with an aspiring producer listening to the pirate radio stations in London in the late 90s and led swiftly to triple rewinds of his monster 2001s Breakstep hit ‘Goose’ by Zed Bias at FWD in the early 2000s. Fast forward to 2024, and ‘Strictly for the Ravers’ promises to give another generation of ravers their own hands-in-the-air soundtrack to the timeless ritual of The Rave.

I wanted the Electric Nasty EP to sound both fresh and nostalgic at the same time, to reflect and refract my roots in Breaks and Breakbeat Garage, while folding in the early 80s Hip Hop and Electro that you can hear on my earliest work. The vibes of the tracks are purposely quite different - the driving vocal-led ‘Electric Nasty’, the deeper roll out of UKG style ‘Get Down’, and the peak-time Breakbeat garage mayhem of ‘You Know’. As always, the goal is to push the scene forward, provide some ammo that DJs from my own and other scenes can play, while staying true to my roots and vibe. Enjoy!

While his previous two releases have been harder-edged soundsystem ammo,  this release finds FreQ taking a more nuanced approach to inspiring rhythmic bodily contortions. Returning to his roots, ‘I’m Back’ launches with a pared-back breakbeat sporting a UKG shuffle, which supports a whispered vocal singing, “I was never part of this world.”  Ocean-deep subs roll out beneath twinkling analog synths that book-end the frequency spectrum setting the sonic stage for a deep dive into FreQ’s oscillatory universe. The mix is peppered with sparse reverb-drenched techno stabs, minimalist squeaks, and bleeps, and an urgent hip-hop vocal sample proclaiming “I’m Back.” Exhaling deeply after a long, lush melodic interlude, FreQ brings the dancefloor back to what matters. Surgical production and a dancefloor-oriented arrangement turn this deep roller into a dancefloor slayer without having to push the intensity of any one part of the composition above cruise control. You guessed it… he’s back, and if this release is anything to go by, it’s hard to argue with.

It’s Burning Man time again and I’ve found an OG Burning Man mix on the hard drive for you. Temple of Breaks 2006 for those who know. It’s a mix of vibey early UK dubstep, Dub, Reggae and HipHop oriented breaks alongside some half time tunes and a bunch of unreleased FreQ material too. A couple of highlights  - the demo mix of ‘Creator’ featuring Santigold after making it in NYC with Switch, early versions of Dub Kirtan All stars material, and some unreleased collabs that just never came out… Enjoy!

Greetings Beat Seekers, FreQ geekers, and bleep makers! I have a little leftfield mayhem for you. I’ve found myself listening to Avenged Sevenfold's epic ‘Nightmare’ album a lot lately. Partly because of the ridiculous drumming courtesy of Mike Portnoy (ex of mathrock musos Dream Theatre) and partly because they remind me of the best bits of Metallica, Queen and original early Gun N Roses all squished into one fierce and well-oiled machine. So I started messing around with their "Welcome To The Family" tune and ended up a few days later with a drumstep re-rub that keeps the sick metal guitar riffs and wicked vocals but adds a jump up bass drop in place of the chorus. Something a bit unusual from me that I thought you might like. Enjoy!

I threw this together as something to play out with the slew of Zinc’s breakbeat garage tunes that were slaying in the early 2000s. It was a bit of fun and nowhere as good as most of Zinc’s bangers. It was harder edged and less fun than a lot of the garage records and in retrospect probably was needlessly aggressive. I’m no gangsta so the sample from gun toting ’90s Gangsta rap crew Onyx was more of a reflection of my own general inner angst than a badman lifestyle.

Oddly enough I played with ONYX in Beijing a few years later. It seemed as if traveling around the world, being exposed to different people and ideas, and the discipline of making Hollywood films with great directors had mellowed them out somewhat. Either that or they were just great showmen, faking it all along. I wasn’t about to find by accusing anyone out loud of faking their gangsta cred, so I guess I was sold on it. But the funny thing is, they didn’t shoot anyone, ask anyone to “Move back motherfucker”, and they weren’t even skulking around the backstage. They were chill, smart, funny and seemed chuffed to be still playing music and doing what they love.

Later as I sat in my room at the hotel, the Onyx crew stopped outside my open window to smoke some weed and I overheard THE BEST hip-hop conversation about girls and weed ever. So maybe a lot had changed, and maybe some things hadn’t changed so much… on tour anyway. I smiled, shaking my head and creased up trying to laugh quietly, but I was secretly happy that some part of my naïve and clichéd view of my gangsta rap heroes was still intact. And yes they did kill… on stage later on. Thanks Fredro!

I hope this finds you all relaxed and contented after enjoying some chill time with fam and friends. I get the feeling right about now you’re getting vibed up for the year to come, making plans and dreaming up schemes, perhaps kicking it all off with a big night out standing in front of a weighty sound system and your favourite DJ this eve.
 
So in celebration of this I wanted to drop a DJ mix on you to complement your holiday chillax, the build up to your big night out, and your year to come in 2013. ‘Bass Nerd Vol III - Trapped in Dub’ is 30 minutes of the tunes I’ve enjoyed over the past 12 months or so, but just the ones with dub and reggae vibes and that 808 drum pressure. They are all tunes I’ve been playing out so it’s kinda  ‘hands in the air’ while at the same time bringing the deeper vibes of the Space Echoes and Psychedelic delays that we know so well from proper dub music. The reggae heads will notice some classic samples from the likes of Pablo Gad, Sister Nancy, Johnny Osbourne, Eeek-a-Mouse and Ding Dong, with and some sweet vocals from Turbulence,  Tippa Irie, Damien Marley, but all of them have sick beats that bring them into 2013 and in many cases well beyond.

FreQ Nasty - Bass Nerd Mixtape Vol 3: Trapped In Dub

A terrible handheld recording of my set at the legendary Glastonbury Festival in 1999 at the Dance Tent - I'm playing a bunch of my own releases from my 'FreQ's Geeks & Mutilations' album which had just been released, and some of BLIM's and my collabs, all mixed from vinyl and dubplate. I had done the pilgrimage to Glasto as a punter several times before and so to actually play there blew my mind! I was so nervous that the first mix takes me 5 minutes to line up apparently :). The monitoring was awful tho, you can actually hear the slapback echo off the tent roof in the recording! But it is a fun reminder of a time when Electronic music was on the rise but still largely an underground phenomenon, and breaks as a genre was still in its infancy. 

The picture is from a spread published in Select magazine that month of June 1999 claiming that the Chemical brothers had to fill in for me because I didn't turn up for my set - UNTRUE as this recording proves :)
