◾Real Name: Javoakes Smith 

◾Current city: Greenville 

◾How did you come up with your dj name: Dubekoms came into play when me and my brother was at a family function and we need it to get away so we had to come up with a code to smoke and Dubekoms was the code and pretty much I just kept that as a DJ name since I begin.

◾How and when did you get into djing: The first time I really got into DJ was my very first trip to Tomorrowland and pretty much that just changed my life.

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: Really I have to say Carl Cox because he was the first man that killed in on three turntables and just kind of really stuck to me and he just gave me a lot of inspiration to keep pushing more and more.


◾Describe your sound as a DJ: My sound as a DJ pretty much samples out as that booty shaking music when I start to play you could definitely hear my sound.

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: Well this year's a pretty big year already got to play one of my favorite Burns and hopefully I will get to play at the bigger one at the end this year so I still have my fingers crossed but other than that I have a few news tracks I have on SoundCloud and definitely going to try to do a tour.

◾Real Name: Michael Greeley 

◾Current city: Charlotte, NC

◾How did you come up with your dj name: I saw an interview with bassist Krist Noveselic of Nirvana describing Kurt Cobain as ‘nice’, but he could also ‘spit venom’. Then there’s this DJ named Johnny Vicious from NYC who’s name and style I always liked. I put the two together to get “Mike Venum”.   

◾How and when did you get into djing: At the end of 2021 somebody randomly told me to download Traktor 2 from Native Instruments and it started from there. 

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: I like rock ‘n roll and heavier techno and trance. Right now: Indira Paganotto, Amelie Lens, Bryan Kearney, Tony Draper from the old-school NYC days. 

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: Grimy techno…Ecstasy-laced trance --- 

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: I’d like to get famous and tour the world so I don’t have to worry about money anymore.

FREQUENCY UNDERGROUND INTERVIEW WITH JODY WITH A Y:

◾Real Name: Jody Flemming

◾Current city: Asheville

◾How did you come up with your dj name: People always misspell my name so the first time I played a gig and they asked me my DJ name, I said Jody With A Y. Oh man, I thought it was the worst name ever but it stuck, so here we are.

◾How and when did you get into djing: I started mixing about 7 years ago. I’ve always been so into music but never had any musical aptitude myself. I played trombone for a minute in middle school and sucked. I just watched what the people around me were doing and tried to do the same. Didn’t work so well.

When I made friends who were DJ’s in Asheville -DJ Jut Rut, Fried Coffee, Mary and Aidan (Double Helix)- I was fascinated by how they mixed and sort of applied that same watch and mimic style, but it turned out way better than my trombone playing. That crew is so supportive and open and without ego. We just played together and I learned the basics.

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: I could write a book on my influencers. I’ve always been a huge music nerd. I love such a wide variety of styles. I went to UGA in Athens in its heyday so I was all about the B52’s and Pylon and REM. All that college radio stuff. Also listened to a lot of “goth” stuff- Cocteau Twins, Sisters of Mercy, Dead Can Dance, Joy Division.

I think my gateway into dance music came through my love of funk. James Brown and the JB’s made me move like I didn’t know I could move. Then I got into Fela Kuti and learned the power and of the long, replete groove, and the trance like state it can conjure.

I didn’t grow up raving. I didn’t know much about it until I fell in love with the Madchester scene- Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Charlatans, 808 State. I remember reading about the Hacienda scene and the second Summer of Love, and thinking that raving sounded like a ball. But I never knew people in that scene and never got into it.

Until I went to Detroit! Holy shit. If anything will make you fall in love with raving, it’s the Movement festival and after party scene. I had never experienced anything like it and I was hooked. The physical force of big loud techno in your chest. Everyone around you feeling and vibing to the same thing. The way my mind just shuts off and my body takes over. It’s so therapeutic. I just love that feeling.

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: I’d say that I try to create a feeling and an ambiance that’s rich and textured. I know I’m not the most technically skilled wizard of a DJ. But I think I have a good ear for things and what layers together well. I enjoy making things sound psychedelic and combining them in interesting ways.
I can’t even say I have a signature sound or genre. One day I’ll mix ambient and drone stuff, the next day dream pop and psych rock. But I have to say that my favorite thing to play is proper, banging, minimal techno on a great sound system for a crowd that’s really feeling it. The energy and joy of that just can’t be beat.

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: As for the future, I don’t have any grand ambitions for my DJ’ing. I don’t really hustle for gigs, but I do pounce when opportunities come along. I just enjoy playing for receptive crowds. Besides, I’ve already been on the home page of Mixmag, so I think I’ve probably reached my zenith. 🙂

◾Real Name: Juan Sanchez-Casanova

◾How did you come up with your dj name: I used my last name, Casanova, and it sounded good so I kept it. 

◾How and when did you get into djing: I first got into DJing when I was a sophomore in college. Me and my roommates were living in a house and we threw parties often so I became our house DJ (no pun intended). After awhile of doing that I got involved at local college bars and the rest is history. 

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: My musical influences are as diverse as it can be. I take inspiration from all kinds of genres and artists. A few of my biggest ones are Kanye West, Dom dolla, Vintage Culture, Chris Lake, and Green velvet  

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: I would say I am still trying to find my sound, but I love tech and latin house music with a passion and play that the most. 

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: I plan on focusing more on my production and releasing some edits/remixes this year. I also plan on releasing my first House single.

FREQUENCY UNDERGROUND INTERVIEW WITH WILL MCGLONE:

◾Real Name: Will McGlone

◾Current city: Johnson City, TN

◾How did you come up with your dj name: I use my name since there are not many people that have the same name. Will is actually my middle name (my first name is Timothy) but I have been called that since I was a child so I roll with it.

◾How and when did you get into djing: My love for electronic music started when I was 12. It started with a game on the PlayStation 1 called Wipeout. You could skip the first track on the game and listen to the music in your cd player. I had that on heavy rotation. At the time, I did not really know what style I was listening to but I just loved the game music.

 Later, when I was in high school a local radio station played this beautiful song that was like nothing I have ever heard. I remember calling the radio station and asking them to tell me what song was playing the space piano music. They told me the song was Robert Miles - Children.  

When I just turned 18 I started getting involved with the clubbing scene and a guy I met at a local club recommended I listen to Paul Oakenfold. I blindly went to the local music store and bought tranceport. The tracklisting led me to buying follow up cds by DJs such Sasha and Digweed, Pual van Dyk, and many more. I just fell  in love with the music and knew that was what I wanted to do. About 6 months before I graduated High School School (around 2000) I got my first set of technics 1200's and the rest was history. I remember a lot of my parents and my friends thought I was insane playing this music (little did they know).

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: In the 90s I listened to a lot of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, 311, Sublime, Verve, Bush, and pretty much anybody in the alt rock grunge movement.

As far as electronic music goes (I have too many to list), However, some of my biggest influences that currently come to mind are Robert Miles, Sasha, Digweed, Orbital, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Orbital. Rufus du Sol, Gui Boratto, Guy J, Dave Seaman, Stephan Bodzin, Luttrell, D-Nox & Beckers, 16 Bit Lolitas, Terry Grant, Ian O'donovan, Brother Tiger, Phealeh, Hybrid, Washed Out, The Howling, RY X, ARTBAT, Gui Boratto, Guy Gerber, and many many many more.
 
◾Describe your sound as a DJ: Most people label me as a progressive house DJ but I play a wide variety of genres. Anything from Deep house, Techno, Progressive, Organic House, Afro House, and even Trancer Stuff. If there is one common theme, I tend to play melodic and hypnotic kinds of tracks.  

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: While life has been busy, my goals are to write more music and play in some new places. I have played around with the idea of rebooting my record label "element underground"..

◾Genre tag for mix (I like to let the artist label their work)

I honestly am not sure what genre this mix is. I am guessing it is progressive or melodic techno but that is a bit subjective to the listener.

◾Real Name: Brian Busto

◾Current city: Tampa

◾How did you come up with your dj name (or why did you use your actual name): Friends usually call me by my last name and being that I’m a Tampa native I thought it was a good choice. 

◾How and when did you get into djing: Went to my first house night in 1991 called Aahz at the Beacham Theater in Orlando Florida. Took me some time to go from observer to participant but I would say the night that changed my life was in 1993 at the legendary Simons in Gainesville Florida. Took E for the first time on a dancefloor and was taken to the house music promised land. The lineup was Laurent Garnier, DJ Three and DJ Chang. I was one of three others that stayed til the last song. A year later I bought my first pair of 1200s with a radio shack mixer. DJ Three went with me on the purchase and helped me get set up. The next day DJ Matty came over to show me the ropes. The start of an incredible journey had begun being a dj/promoter for close to 30 years now. Out of the 30 years ive been professional for about 23 of them including currently. Underground music only!

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: As for DJ influences go that’s an easy one. DJ Three, Doc Martin, Derrick May, Derrick Carter, Danny T, and Laurent Garnier. 

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: Well I’m not a genre dj so describing my sound is like describing my mood. It really depends on how I’m feeling and the room I’m playing for. I try my best to not be predictable. 
What’s consistent is the style in which I play. First and foremost for me are long mixes, smooth transitions and track selection. I keep the effects to a minimal and let the music do the talking. 

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: A vinyl night with good friends, more gigs to travel to, more events in my hometown, and more mixes to make.

◾Real Name: Mark Buziak

◾Current city:  Easley, SC but moving to Simpsonville SC hopefully this year.

◾DJ Collective: Greenville House Music Movement (playing on Events with DJ Sawce and Zoltan) Currently on Think Tab Brew Events once a month.

◾How did you come up with your dj name (or why did you use your actual name): Buzze was my nickname in Germany, used it when i was MC on Hardcore Techno parties, there i was MC da Buzz, Buzz was short for Buzze, so my DJ name is DJ Buzze now. 

◾How and when did you get into djing: I always was into djing since i started with making music on an Amiga 500. Then i jumped into Hardcore Techno in Germany and became MC from 2002-2017 with some interruptions.

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: Back in the days my musical influence came from several directions. I never followed one particular DJ, for me it was the beat and the music environment where i was. In germany we started with bunker parties, or in the forrest, then back to Warehouses and super huge parties with crowed to a million people. That was what i liked. I saw DJ's playing in a treehouse and on big stages. When i was MC i performed for 10 people and then up to thousands on a big party. I am inspired by some DJ's that play at Defected events, and nowadays also inspired by Resistance.

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: My Sound is upbeat disco funk style. From Funky House to Glitterbox style basically.

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: I would love that we have a huge event here in Greenville, maybe once per year with a lot of people coming. I would love to play on certain events and hopefully in a club too.

◾How did you come up with your dj name: LaCow is a mixture of my Colombian heritage and English as a second language. Friend and I always use to say Hello by saying “moo”. I took it and ran with it by calling my self the Cow.

◾How and when did you get into djing: Listening to Paul Oakenfold’s Essential Mixes and listening to Tiesto’s ISOS compilations. Got turntables at 19 and the rest was history.
◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: I’ve always been a Trance junky. Paul Van Dyk, The Thrillseekers, Pulser, Giuseppe Ottaviani in the Trance Genre. As far as Progressive or Melodic House I dig Yotto, PROFF, and really dig what Alex O’Rion is putting out. As far for Organic House, Krasa Rosa have a very elegant sound.

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: I want to believe I am recording or playing an Essential Mix, some what of a journey through sounds and melodies. Creating a vibe for everyone to enjoy.

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: I’d like to start playing out and sharing some of my unshared music I’ve personally produced.

Real Name: Scott Steiner

Current city: Atlanta, GA

How did you come up with your dj name: 
- The origin of “Whatever, Man” came from a phrase I say all the time, to the point where I get mocked for it. I also believe music should be fun so I wanted to pick a name that didn’t sound so serious. As a DJ, I like to play a wide range of music and it all depends on the scenario and the time and place, so when people ask me what do you play, it’s Whatever, Man. 

How and when did you get into djing: 
- I’ve been DJing for about a year. There’s a saying in the industry, if you hang out long enough you either become a promoter or a DJ. Turns out to be accurate and I ended up doing both. At the start I swore I wouldn’t DJ and instead I would get involved with every other aspect of the industry. I started DJing simply because I wanted to share music that I like. Being surrounded by DJs, my days of being a Spotify DJ came to an end so if I wanted to share music at parties, I needed to learn how to DJ. 

Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: 
- I get inspiration from all music, specifically from small events and friends that make music. My inspiration comes from my love of sharing music people probably haven’t heard. I love going to small festival gatherings, like Sonic Oasis, and I always leave feeling inspired by the wide range of styles and music people share. It’s truly a showcase of underground music and new sounds.

Describe your sound as a DJ:
- Gut Music!! It's not defined by one style of sound, beat, or tempo. Gut music is every moment where music transcended fear, annihilated pain, embraced sadness, and lifted indifference. Music is an expression of emotion so I try to deliver that while also having it be fun and upbeat. But really it’s, Whatever, Man and it’s dictated by the time, place, and scenario.

What does the future hold in store for you as an artist:
- As a DJ, it’s just to continue to have fun with it and use it as an outlet to express my emotions. My main area of focus is supporting artist and growing the community through artist management and event production. When it makes sense, I like to play small events, usually put on by friends and I specifically love opening and setting the vibe for the night!
