Episode 113 - 90.9 FM (Salinas) Mix

It was under a pleasant sunset at Avila Beach—and at other San Luis Obispo-area surfside haunts—that we assembled this week’s episode.

It features an interview with Southern Californian DJ Ravell, who tells us about a collaboration he’s been working on with Jack Trades (a fellow Angeleno), titled "Calling."

Soundcloud producer MIKELOPS drops us a line after we let him know his track’s been selected for the broadcast.

And DJ Melisa takes over the second hour of the show with a cohesive mix that blends disco-y house with more mellow selections—telling a water-inspired dancefloor story that’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

In this week's episode of the Frequency Horizon (broadcast on Pirate Cat Radio just as 38 inches of snowfall was underway), we offer an on-the-slope view of how one independent ski hill (Sierra-at-Tahoe) is doing a couple years after a devastating wildfire ripped through the property. Shout-out to the marketing department for giving us a behind-the-scenes look at how a local-focused mountain ticks.

We take you inside a Heavenly gondola of the sort made famous where a pour soul got trapped inside overnight a few weeks back.

And we hear firsthand from "lifties" themselves 1. About what it was like to cope with a slow start to the season and 2. Some of the underground DJs tearin' up the Legion dancefloors this year.

Given the recent suspected fentanyl deaths in town, we'll cap off the episode with an interview with State Senator Dave Cortese about efforts underway in Sacramento to get a handle on the overdose crisis.

Of course, we weave it all together with some top-shelf tune-age to help get you fired up to hop on a lift and carve some quality turns.

This week we we’ll usher you into the program with a “cold open” monologue over the strains of Dub Physix’s “The Clock Ticks.” Then a community choir helps bless the boats as part of the Pacific Rim Whale Festival.

Screenwriter Erin McMullan pops by the studio for a live chat about her thrilling experience attending the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival (put on by the folks at www.womeninfilm.ca/) the previous weekend. We’ll take a look at what goes in to turning words into a Hollywood blockbuster and ask her about a memorable #horizon moment.

We have a Vancouver Island musician call in live to the program from Mexican surf town Sayulita. He’ll give us the skinny on the environment @apparat was surrounded by when they created one of their best tracks.

I’ll give you breaking news about public beach access improvements, Tofino’s plan to crack down on Air BnB hosts operating illegally, and give you a sense of the community’s efforts to push British Columbia in a more “green” direction — at least as far as its investments are concerned. (Set to an Infected Mushroom track).

In the downtown LA warehouse they had LTJ Bukem, the man known for invigorating atmospheric and liquid drum n' bass genres at the point of inception (who Blue Lunar Monkey @bluelunarmonkey had nothing but good things to say about playing alongside), to make it official. @ltj-bukem

9:20 - Emmy award-winning writer and executive producer with Seinfeld, Simpson and Rocko's Modern Life credits to his name, Ron Hauge steps into the Frequency Horizon limelight after brunch. You'll have to listen to find out why he told us: "I'm on drugs."

17:40 - Rafa the Brazilian psytrance DJ known as Nitrous comes to LA and is thrilled to be in Koreatown. He's trying to get new clients and improve his English. @djnitrous

41:06 - We meet a Santa Monica character who claimed to be an original Motley Crue member. Odean tells us about his plan to frustrate PETA.

48:00 - Deadmau5 decided it was time to do a full orchestra-electronic mash-up in an extremely professional manner. The energy at the second day of the Where's the Drop? festivities at LA's the Wiltern was moving. The sincerity of the production was thrilling. And even though some were surprised it didn't break out into a full-on dance party, you could almost hear personal music growth happening all around. Musical director Gregory Reveret did an amazing job.

Episode 112 ~ Dublab Guest Session: All Gas No Brakes + DJ Christian Löffler Interviews, RIP Dylan

The cover art I created for this remix of a remix mixed with a remix kind of says it all:

-I've included a South Bay pier vantage point of Palos Verdes Peninsula lights, from one of the many late-night longboarding sessions on the well-paved expanse of South LA streets that helped pass pandemic lockdown hours. That's when I started working on this challenging mash-up.

-There's the source imagery from the Face to Face and Spoken tracks that form the two-part basis for my remix. Dualistic indeed!

-And of course, I have the overlays from Santa Cruz (art house views and Pleasure Point surf action), where I finished both this track and the Dublab Guest Session in which I debuted the creative number:

I tried to produce the song as if the sonic elements were various waves coming from different far-off directions, but ultimately combining for a foamy rush of nostalgia and forward-thinking experimentation.
