Welcome to New Orleans: A tribute to New Orleans Funk and Soul is the work of New Orleans native, DJ Personify. Raised in the Crescent City, the die-hard Hip-Hop fan learned early on that many of the samples he discovered originated in New Orleans. He soon became infatuated with the Funk and Soul music recorded there and has spent the better part of the last twenty years immersed in the culture of those records. Personify’s passion for New Orleans' music and culture extends to the present day and is manifested in this DJ mix masterpiece. Lovingly compiled, all of the artists featured on the mix are native to New Orleans with the exception of Hugo Montenegro who plays alongside Al Hirt (a New Orleans native) and The Headhunters, who are included here because of their work with Bill Summers (a life-long New Orleanian). All songs and samples used on this mix were recorded from vinyl sources. I remember the exact moment when I first heard @BigWild's music. I was sitting in my room, trading music with Chad (from Lazerdisk). "You have to check out this tune 'Venice Venture'," he vehemently insisted, "it's sooo good." The song was paired with a video comprised entirely of surf footage, setting the vibe with westside Los Angeles overtones and island-though-not-tropical influence. "The guitar riff in the song was actually recorded by his dad." If the music wasn't good enough, the fact that this song was a familial collaboration bolstered my confidence in Big Wild's then-budding career.

I was locked in from that point on. I waited like a kid by the mailbox for the comic book toy I had mailed away for, only that toy was new, truly inspired music from a musician with more potential than most in his class. Since then, he's toured with Odesza and GRiZ, joined Windish Agency and Red Light management, remixed the likes of Hundred Waters and Champagne Drip, and released on Odesza's Foreign Family Collective label. Needless to say, I had a lot of questions about his time on tour, at home, and how his music sounds so good.

As is always the case with my artist interviews, I’ve made another mix inspired by my most recent subject: Ta-ku.  Though it was released as a written feature, meaning the recording won’t be uploaded, I’ve put together a mix featuring 100 of my favourite tracks, remixes and features from the Perth producer, plus a remix from fellow Australian, Flume. This marks the third artist-exclusive mix I’ve done following my Freddie Gibbs and Knxwledge specials.

With so many tracks from Ta-ku's long and detailed discography I’ve split the mix into two parts that loosely flow chronologically. Part I focuses on his hip-hop origins and the synth-filled songs that his earlier releases were full of. Look out for Part II in a few days.

I’ll be dropping the entire mix in the near future for those that would appreciate it. I know I say it all the time, but really, thank you for the support. It’s much appreciated, and has helped me achieve so much with these mixes and interviews during my three years in Japan, so I’m glad that I’m able to end my time here with the biggest interview + mix project I’ve undertaken yet.
