You volunteered
we couldn't stop you
from joining the rest of the boys
Nowt we could say
would make you stay away
from the noise
of the guns
and the bombs
going off all around;
killing and maiming
without hesitating
in case it was one of their own
going down.

"Why were you running away from the battle?",
that's all the Captain could say.
Were you yellow or were you just frightened,
a coward or just not very brave.

You looked like a man
your uniform sparkling
your mother was prouder than punch
You marched down the street
in your fresh booted feet
and the town
gathered round
to cheer you all off
to the war.
To kill and to maim
without knowing the name
of the man you were shooting
or stabbing to death
for the cause.

The whistle blew shrill and then over the top;
you were running through mud that's knee high
past the bodies of men you grew up with 
did the thought send you out of your mind

The ship sailed away
you were so excited
you didn't look back to the shore
where we waved and we prayed
and we wished you'd have stayed
But you'd gone
with your friends
to meet glorious ends;
men will sing - 
of the days and the nights
when you stood tall to fight
for the country, the corps
and the King

You took the first bullet between the shoulders
the second went straight through your head.
Even though you were running the wrong way,
the bastards made sure you were dead.

History will tell of a lost generation;
the "Flower of Youth" gone for good.
The poppy's blood-red a reminder
that the war to end wars never could.

Liverpool singer/songwriter releases his debut album “Trains” in September 2016 
John has released a few singles in the last 18 months including:
Rodeo Girl – Listening to John Jenkins is like sitting in the world’s most comfortable armchair (Getintothis)
The Paris Wife – is a song of true elegance and refined softness – John really knows how to capture a scene (Liverpool Sound and Vision 8.5/10)
-	A very classy song (Folk North West) 
Sweet Delphine – The vocal from Jenkins is something like your favourite winter coat (Musical Outcast) 
-	If ever a song felt like a painting then Sweet Delphine is that track (Liverpool Sound and Vision 9/10)
Her Soldier Boy EP – is a wonderful EP, I loved it from start to finish. John Jenkins has a brilliantly delicate voice that makes every listener insatiable for more. (Out in the Crowd) 

Additionally John is the songwriter for his projects “John Jenkins and that Sure Thing” which features guest singers, plus his instrumental project “Midnight in Manhattan” and wrote the Liverpool Acoustic Collective charity song “Someday we’ll see better days” 

He recently played at the “Folk at the Dock” Festival in August 2016
-	John delighted a packed Anchor Courtyard with his gentle tales and minor key melodies, great acoustic music, sunshine and an enthusiastic audience – it doesn’t get better than this (liverpooletc.com)

This sound recording was recorded dead at The Prospect Booze & Pill, summer 2016 was good in Largs cos it rained plenty and I didn't have all this competitive treadmill shit in my head, aspiring bullhorn, when will you trade the cafe for a land drover, projection projection, void... For the pleasure and for its concise purpose... Because if he didn't do it, who did? is not a question I feel capable of answering with that many dishes in your sink, feeling in the way.
