Onomatopoeia Records is proud to present Bonjour Poulet by Stephen EvEns

Stephen EvEns (aka Stephen Gilchrist) has mis-spent the good years gifted him by touring the world and elsewhere as an auxiliary cog in the machinery of major “indie-stardom”.  A sideman.  A player, if you will. A sticks-man, a foil perhaps but never a “session musician.”  

No such thing. Look it up.

Lucky enough to have stood for some years behind the likes of Graham Coxon, The Damned, Charlotte Hatherley and, for one brief week, Cardiacs, he has decided to shun the tourbus life and take a walk through his own songbook for a change.

Putting down the drums sticks and arming himself with a battered guitar and a casiotone he decided to channel all his bitterness & resentment into songs rather than bottling it up. Breeding some kind of abnormal growth or canker. An album that took far too long to surface has now been coaxed out by the sympathetic ears of Onomatopoeia records.

The result is the album Bonjour Poulet.  A 43 minute song book that mixes the spirit of Yo La Tengo and Ivor Cutler with broken friendships and human error.

The songs are beautiful and the words are horrible. I don't know why you don't think that's a good thing.

Story: Though, not necessarily a common jazz-household name in the United States, Matija Dedic has been a dominating figure in the jazz and popular music scene in Croatia and throughout Europe for over 20 years. He has shared the stage and/or recorded with an array of current trendsetters in the world of jazz and creative music including folks like John Hollenbeck, Buster Williams, Alvin Queen, and Martin Drew to name a few. On his last three trio records, he was supported by powerhouse rhythm sections of Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, Kendrick Scott and Vicente Archer, and Scott Colley and Antonio Sanchez. A short list of engagements had him in Turkey, Spain, Austria, Sweden, England, Brasil, USA, and more. As a leader, he has released records on Blue Bamboo, Origin, Dallas and Workin’ labels. Most recently he was featured at the Buenos Aires International Jazz Festival where ears&eyes Records director Matthew Golombisky and Matija grabbed a couple cups of coffee and rapped the jazz scenes in Eastern Europe, Buenos Aires and various cities in the US while also getting really excited about this current release.

Dedicated is both a play on Matija’s last name, Dedic, but more importantly that the album is dedicated to his father. Arsen Dedic played an incredibly important and crucial part of Matija’s pursuit in music, piano and jazz and who in his own right Arsen was an accomplished composer, songwriter and poet.

‘His Visit’ is a scaled down trio of piano, cello and bass and creates a mysterious pad of reflection. It’s definitely a “jazz record” with virtuosic solos with heads, piano intros, and complex harmony, but there’s a bigger sense of purpose and direction with this set of tunes. It’s decisive with a clear intention: the memory and thankfulness of a lost friend, mentor and father.

Recorded in Astoria, New York’s famous Samurai Hotel, it’s a clean, crisp sounding recording that allows the listener to feel like they were in the room during the recording sessions. Owner and recording engineer, David Stoller and his studio, are top-picks for many of the big-hitters of jazz including Nicholas Payton, Cyrus Chestnut, Steve Turre, Chris Potter, Cedar Walton and a lot more.

Though ears&eyes Records has found itself releasing mostly Chicago-based artists and groups where we were birthed some ten years ago, we are incredibly excited to welcome Matija to a family that may be based in Chicago but includes all artists with a global presence and self-awareness of connectedness. Join us in welcoming Matija, along with Chris Cheek, Juke Pukl, Johnathan Blake, Noah Hoffeld, Joannes Weidenmueller and Matt Brewer on what will be a record of reflection, not only of Arsen Dedic, but of our own lives and those dear to us, near or far. During an eurotrip three boys decided to start a band together and write one song in each city, in a park in Milano they decided to take the name Milano Sun. After a four year hiatus the Swedish popband is finally back with the song “Boomerang”. After intense listening to Grizzly Bear, Beta Band and Pink Floyd the sound is not quite what we’re used to hear from the exile-Gothenburgians. Boomerang flirts with the psychadelica of the 60’s and the britrock of the 90’s without leaving that dreaming sound that made us all fall in love with Milano Sun the first time.

After releasing their first single “Already Gone” in 2012 they immediately gained recognition from both national and international critics although what started out as a story of three friends starting a band on a bench in Italy, slowly faded away and shortly after their debut EP “Scandinavia” the band was put on ice.

While taking some time apart the members worked as producers in the famous “Ingrid-studio”, founded by Lykke Li and members from Miike Snow and Peter, Bjorn & John, and collaborated with some of the biggest artists in Sweden both as producers as well as musicians. During the time spent working with others the band recruited a drummer, Zackarias Ekelund from Maasai, and recorded the new album. The first single “Boomerang” is released on VÅRØ March 31 and is followed up by more music later this year. Milano Sun consists of David Axelsson, Johan Jonasson, Love Sivik and Zackarias Ekelund.
