A career where you’ve signed and/or produced The Housemartins, The Proclaimers, Robert Plant, Simple Minds, Debbie Harry, Blancmange and Beth Nielsen Chapman?

A four-decade career where you were once, briefly but gloriously, Brian Brando, lesser-known brother of, y’know, that guy, in the cult band The Brians, whose lament ‘My Brother’s Famous’ found traction with Brians everywhere.

Well, you might finally step out front and make a record in your own name. After all, what’s 40 years between friends – particularly when one of those friends is Petula Clark. And that’s just what John Williams has done.

‘New Flag’ is a song for our time; a song of hope; about adapting to new circumstances; holding onto hope; appreciating the simpler things, the constants in your life.

The video that accompanies ‘New Flag’ is a joyous shot in the arm of young and old(er) artists, playing and singing their hearts out. Petula Clark looks and sounds amazing, and John Williams doesn’t sound bad…

It was shot by Andy McConnell, whose last music video was for Blancmange’s ‘Living On The Ceiling’ in 1982. The same Andy McConnell who is now a regular on Antiques Roadshow, not for his knowledge of pop music, but as a connoisseur of glass.
