Any artist is welcome to send us a track via freshonthenet.co.uk anytime between Monday lunchtime and Wednesday evening (or when we receive 200 submissions, whichever is sooner) - and all our moderators, including Tom Robinson, will listen to every track. This is our full inbox from the week beginning Mon 14th October 2024 from Friday afternoon you'll be able to hear our shortlist and pick your favourites on this week's Listening Post which will appear at freshonthenet.co.uk/batch545

If a track you submitted does not appear in this list, it’s probably because another of your tracks appeared in our Fresh Faves or on the BBC Music Introducing Mixtape during the last three months — we ask that artists featured on either wait three months before resubmitting to give others a chance. 

We also don’t accept short previews or SoundCloud Go tracks that can only be heard as 30 second previews, and tracks made private after submission, which cannot be included in playlists. You will be able to resubmit the track in future. Tracks (and remixes of tracks) that have been previously submitted, and tracks from banned artists will also be removed.

Christmas songs and the like are also not eligible for the Listening Post, although we will collect these into a playlist that will be published on 24 December.

Richard Jose was born in Lanner near Redruth and at the age of just fourteen his father died and the eldest of five children, it was down to Richard to provide for his family. Richard crossed the Atlantic on board a ship during the depths of winter and gained the nickname ‘the singing kid’ due to his already incredible singing voice. He was expecting to meet an Uncle at New York but his Uncle never arrived. At the age of fourteen Richard walked right across the states from New York to Nevada, finding work along the way singing in bars and saloons to Cornish miners (Cousin Jacks) who had already emigrated. The long story short is that Richard Jose became one of the world’s early recording stars releasing Gramaphone records. He sung on Broadway and in San Francisco and was even described by the great Tenor Caruso as being the worlds greatest balladeer! Richard Jose returned to Cornwall in 1895 to perform in his home Lanner Chapel where people queued out the doors. Cornish folk, proud of Richard’s fame put candles and lanterns in their windows all the way between Redruth and Lanner to welcome him home.

Perhaps it was 2007, I started a moleskine as I have done for centuries, but this time without writing any dates, and mostly consisting of drawings. It was the year I first conceived Dream Society, graduated from art school, became self employed, lived in Battersea in a house with green walls, somewhere in a world beyond time and space; spending hours writing the most extravagant colourful websites using only a text editor, creating experimental films in which I cut out each frame by hand, making music with house hold objects and discovering a world of books that opened my mind and being to infinite possibilities, pondering about the nature of reality, consciousness and existence. My pals and I would go to the supermarket at 2:45am; I wrote songs on an old ships piano I had to tune anew every day, and a harmonium in the key of not-quite-Bb. 

Sometimes I had visions, like lucid daydreams, or frames of future memories: I once saw myself in a flowery dressing gown, writing books, in a flat with green walls in Amsterdam.  Another one had me play on Top of the Pops. Now wouldn’t that be funny, I thought. Sometimes a song would appear like that. Like this melody that appeared, and I had to write it down, and it never became a song, just a small mantra that kept popping up, sometimes, especially at times when becoming aware of my supreme impatience; a wanting of it All, Now! 

Yet when I create, I am patient, there is -only- Now. 

Many years later, in Amsterdam, not yet with green walls but in a colourful flat on my favourite canal, I started playing around with some homemade sounds, a harmonium, some birds, and then pressed record as I sang into the mic and words and melodies flowed freely, and there it was, this melody that time travelled and brought the rest of its song along, because sometimes this is how it goes, and time folds, and everything is different and yet in essence, so very much the same; falling awake from the illusion of time and space and separation, and there is only Now, and Now, and Now, in tune and in sync with the divine perfection of life.

🦇 The Spooky month is here! And we are very excited 🙃 Halloween is our favourite Holiday, so it seemed only fitting that we release some songs to mark the occasion - so we wrote a whole new album "Happy Halloween" coming out on...well, Halloween!

💙 That said though, we wanted to announce it at the start of the month 📆 using this sneaky wee single - that's also 🪄 A SPELL 🧝‍♂️ "Toogras" is an old Swedish spell to find your true love, or generally invite goodness into your life. Simply write "Toogras" on your hand before dawn...and see what happens! 🫢

The second track "游魂野鬼" (Wandering Ghost) gives you a step into the Spooky month, and hints to our latest album 'Happy Halloween', releasing on...Halloween!
