Any artist is welcome to send us a track via freshonthenet.co.uk anytime between Monday lunchtime and Wednesday evening (or when we receive 200 submissions, whichever is sooner) - and all our moderators, including Tom Robinson, will listen to every track. This is our full inbox from the week beginning Mon 10th November 2025: from Friday afternoon you'll be able to hear our shortlist and pick your favourites on this week's Listening Post which will appear at freshonthenet.co.uk/batchxxx

If a track you submitted does not appear in this list, it’s probably because another of your tracks appeared in our Fresh Faves or on the BBC Music Introducing Mixtape during the last three months — we ask that artists featured on either wait three months before resubmitting to give others a chance. 

We also don’t accept short previews or SoundCloud Go tracks that can only be heard as 30 second previews, and tracks made private after submission, which cannot be included in playlists. You will be able to resubmit the track in future. Tracks (and remixes of tracks) that have been previously submitted, and tracks from banned artists will also be removed.

Christmas songs and the like are also not eligible for the Listening Post, although we will collect these into a playlist that will be published on 24 December.

Following recent sun-drenched single ‘Mango Season’ and the swirling dark energy of ‘Instrumentality’, Glasgow’s genre-blurring oddball Peter Cat is back with ‘The Power Of Positive Thinking’, the final taste of his forthcoming second album, Starchamber, set for release on 21st November via Trapped Animal Records. 

A track that was initially home-recorded in demo form back in 2019, ‘The Power Of Positive Thinking’ has now been built upon and developed into the captivating, cinematic soundscape you hear today. Initially only having the chorus to work with, more lyrics and meaning have now been added to create further context to the song’s meaning. Peter Cat explains:

“All I had for years was that chorus hook on its own – and nothing else! So to whip it into a full song, I had to work backwards and sort of fashion some kind of narrative sense out of the thing, after the fact, which is the opposite to how I usually work. I had to decide what it was I, or we, were supposed to be feeling 'positive' about...”

Despite its theatrical uplifting energy, however, the track actually offers a rather terrifying glimpse into a post-apocalyptic near-future. As swooning vocals soar above a bed of analog synths and a wandering bassline, an eerily surreal narrative is created:

“I think I was reading about hosepipe bans in the news at the time and it all just sort of escalated from there. It's an interesting counterpoint to the rest of the songs on the record, which are about facing up to and transcending guilt… this one ended up being about that very human temptation to just stick your head in the sand when things are going wrong, pretend that everything's fine and dandy when the world around you is clearly burning. Suddenly that chorus doesn't sound so cheerful after all!"

Peter Cat, the Glasgow-based project of songwriter Graham Gillespie, has built a cult reputation for outsider pop and theatrical art rock, and now, with ‘The Power Of Positive Thinking’, he once again proves his ability to create truly unique, strangely immersive soundscapes. As the song unfolds with a cinematic drama and sweeping grandeur, Gillespie succeeds in juxtaposing a poignant sense of urgency with his trademark playful caustic wit. 

The Power of Positive Thinking

Off the back of their courageous debut, ‘Denouement,’ in February, A Different Kitchen’s succeeding record continues to broaden the scope of the band’s sonic landscape, establishing the latest rendition of the quintet’s ever-evolving sound. 

Since forming in 2023, A Different Kitchen have specialised in writing thoughtful and achingly personal songs, designed for live consumption - leading to national radio coverage from Tom Robinson and Emily Pilbeam on BBC Radio 6 Music. Having received accolades from the pair, the post-punk outfit have since been tipped as ‘Ones to Watch in 2025’ by their local BBC Introducing station. This label is one that the 5-piece outfit have strived to pursue, with two EP releases this year, leading to a slot at Sheffield’s Get Together Festival in May, alongside emerging acts such as English Teacher, Swim Deep and Adult DVD. After a sold-out EP release party at The Finsbury, London, A Different Kitchen are riding a wave of momentum having recently announced a debut UK tour culminating in their second self-produced EP, 'Revolt', on November 7th.

This track is the title track of my third EP released on streaming platforms on 7th November 2025. It imagines what it might feel like to finally give yourself permission to fall in love with someone and begin to believe that it could actually work out. It explores the idea that those elements coming together at the same time could feel like a form of art.
