They are Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, and they need no introduction. When your old man writes D.I.S.C.O. there's only one way to go, and through a fire of screeching 303 acid lines, they found their way home with nowhere left to travel. If you've been living under a rock or self-isolating in a lead-cladded panic room, the Daft Punks have bid adieu to one another, and this is our tribute to their legacy; Pete Carvell cranking up the energy for a thunderous rollin' and scratchin' ode to the two French boys who lived inside robots. To those who lost themselves to dance, we salute you.

At the end of the 1990s, skipped garage beats were forming a new evolution of sound in urban dance music; flooding dancefloors from East London to Ayia Napa with good vibes, attitude and eccentric MCs. Taking the 'speed garage' that Americans Todd Edwards and Armand van Helden had pioneered to a new audience and setting forth a transition that would go on to form UKG and dubstep, this hedonistic summer-ready style was a critical juncture for the British underground. Hollering with the rinsin' sound, Fresh Soup's thememaster drops an hour of sun-soaked club music from the golden era of 2-step.

Active from 1991 until his untimely death in 2017, Marcus Intalex was a true pioneer of drum and bass in the north west of England, and a force our Simm considered one of the very best their was. Also producing house and techno music under the pseudonym Trevino, this tribute to a prolific game-changer in dance music takes us from Intalex's frenetic and soulful d&b back down to the slower but no less intense sounds of his four-to-the-floor alter ego; Simm marking the anniversary of his passing with a mix that embraces tempos from 174bpm to 126bpm.

A Girona boy with Mexican heritage, Daniel Hertz is a DJ and producer with a focus on techno, electro and house music, but still holding a deep connection to his early roots of disco, funk, dub and soundsystem culture. Kicking off with a reggae Bee Gees cover, reaching a climax of sweaty dancefloor disco, and connecting the dots on the way through all manner of sweet soulful sounds, Hertz's first contribution to Fresh Soup is as eclectic as one may expect given his myriad of influences.

Santander-born José Luis Ordax Martí — or more simply, Gato — has spent the last 20 years residing on another Spanish coastline, having showcased his passion for electronic music at diverse spaces across Barcelona and its surrounding area. Simm discovered electronic music at the age of 11, back in 1991. From there he followed the rave scene through hardcore to jungle and drum and bass. At 16 he got his first pair of decks and started collecting vinyl. Throughout the years he’s been involved in various genres, but drum and bass is always the sound closest to his heart.

This first mix for Fresh Soup is a selection of some of his favourite releases from 1996, the year he began DJ'ing. Tech step through to Jump Up and some of the more deeper cuts, DJ Simm provides a short journey through that seminal year.
