Symphony Number 1 by William Boyce was arranged and transposed by Dominic Shann, from the orchestral score in B flat major.
Boyce was born in London in around 1711, becoming Master of the King’s Music
in 1757. The original title being Ode for the New Year (1756), it is one of eight symphonies and appears on our new CD.

Sinfonia in Sol Maggiore Carlo Cecere (1706 - 1761)

Recuerdos de la Alhambra – which translates as Memories of the Al Hambra – is a well-known classical guitar piece composed in 1896 by Spanish composer and virtuoso guitarist Francisco Terrega. He wrote it in Granada. It showcases the challenging guitar technique know as tremolo, wherein a single melody note is plucked repeatedly by the fingers in such rapid succession that it sounds like one long note, while the thumb plays a counter-melody on the bass string. We do this using a whole orchestra, and tremolo on the mandolin is the technique we use to sustain sound, using a plectrum to pluck two strings very fast.

Brighton's very own mandolin orchestra has been in existence since its foundation by Ian Harris, the original Leader and Musical Director of the Orchestra, in 1995. His goal was to revive the tradition of mandolin orchestras, which were hugely popular in the UK up until the 1930s. As of April 2012 Ian passed on the baton as Musical Director to Lindsay Stoner. The Mango Trio was formed by 3 members of the orchestra.
