| PREMIERE | MACHINETE - Pelle [Feral Colony]

Lying somewhere between a collaborative EP and a compilation, Brussels-based label Maloca Records presents SIIIX, Vol.1, a body of work showcasing a dialogue between veteran Netherlands-based HIIIT (fka percussion ensemble Slagwerk Den Haag) and 6 producers operating across a diverse spectrum of electronic music. Shimmering between footwork, IDM, UK bass and ambient, this project is united by a shared acoustic palette.

Born in 2021, HIIIT was directed by group member and respected multi-instrumentalist/composer Frank Wienk (Binkbeats) to record a sample bank from their vast collection of instruments and unique percussive sources, comprising everything from plastic fuel cans to the largest tam-tam in Europe. A select group of producers were then commissioned to compose sketches from this sample bank.

Chosen by HIIIT are label newcomers Azu Tiwaline, upsammy, Julian Sartorius, Krampfhaft and Valentina Magaletti, as well as Belgian drummer and producer Hi Hats In Trees, who returns to Maloca after releasing his album ‘Artefacts’ on the label last year. Each producer was hand-picked for their percussion-focused music approach and in many cases, their background as drummers.

After creating their sketches, the works were sent back to HIIIT, who recorded more unique layers of percussion on top of these initial pieces. These were then returned to the commissioned producers, with the brief being to utilise the newly recorded material in any way; but to ultimately create fully-realised pieces of music with it.

The final result led to 6 wildly different sonic outcomes. From the high-energy workouts of upsammy’s ‘Embrytone’, Azu Tiwaline’s ‘Brain Rattled’ and Hi Hats In Trees’s ‘CAIRO’, to Julian Satorius’s warped rhythms in ‘Klutsel-Klötzli’, or the cinematic ambient spaces conjured by Kramphaft’s ‘Anticline’ and Valentina Magaletti’s ‘A Drink with the Queen of Wands’, Maloca x HIIIT is a collection of music which rattles and pulses across the electronic music continuum. What unites this record is the acoustic colour and sense of life which would have been next to impossible to achieve without the bespoke sonics from HIIIT.

As a whole, the record can be considered as an organic dialogue; be it between composers and producers from a conceptual standpoint, or between acoustic sound sources and the resultant electronic manipulation when listening to the material.

Built around a trip to the annual Nine Emperor Gods festival on the island of Phuket, Thailand, Bizarr is the sonic end result of an immersion into Thai ritual culture. The festivities and rituals of this so-called Vegetarian festival, which aim to give health and wisdom back to the community, inspired this beautiful, ecstatic collage of music, self-illuminating Kokett in the process. In this narrative of 6 long, stretched out songs, he conjures up an electrifying sense of catharsis and transcendence. Benedikt Frey is many. Or just one? He is a composer. An arranger. A DJ. A Liveact. A ghost producer. A fan. He also plays in bands like INIT, or Dolphins or KEYS +++ produced the last two albums for Chris Imler. Downbeat in experimental dub zones. The goat for Edits and remixes. When house was his nation, he used to listen to pen names like Suedmilch or Venedikt Reyf. He still likes the music formed under their umbrella, but today his tomorrow is not echoed in yesterday. His sound signature moved on. Into the open. He founded labels like R.i.O. or Serious Trouble. 

He lives in Berlin. Physically. In mind Benedikt Frey is at many places. Traveling far thru his home studio that is a flat a studio a flat an instrument a record collection a flat a studio. Everywhere gear, vinyl, tapes, instruments, rooms for spontaneous sonic notions, these moments, when a sudden strike of stimulation falls. He is inspired a lot. For music to dance. Music for films. Music for live shows. Music for dancing glows. Techno, house, downbeat, ambient, jungle, electronics outside the norms. Those transportive ones. Jamming with others. Jamming with his mind. In Berlin Wedding, North of the town, where the lights dimmed low, neighbors share the flow, and a small river runs slow.  As a DJ he plays here, there, everywhere. Big clubs, small shacks, festivals, gatherings. From fast to 90 BPM - as he feels. 

For himself. For the crowd. In the spur. He still remembers his club kid days. Going to dance with friends. Down there in Offenbach. Doing the Robert Johnson. Collective emotions for a better tomorrow. These he still seeks. In his music. His shows. His collaborations. You can book him for a party. For enlightenment. For ecstasy or introspective perspectives. Dancing slow, whilst pirouetting a high-pitched show. 

Since more than a decade. His own music is out there, too. Bringing his spirits in sound. On his own labels. On international imprints like ESP Institute, Hivern Discs, Craigie Knowes, or Emotional Response. Solo works. Driving ones. Slow drills. Teased during his DJ dates around the planet. 

The music plays day and night. Inspiration comes. From a simple kick drum. A movie sequence. A bird on the sill. A picture, totally still. Can’t kick that feeling when it hits. Benedikt Frey. In dreams. In streams. In music. Emotions. Situations. At night. In those flashy lights, when it bites.
