Tokyo-based Yuto Takei (@yutotakei) 's latest work is an assortment of numbers that represents fairly well his versatility as a music maker. His capability of painting afterglow soundscapes with a cinematic approach is counterpoised by an almost obsessive interest in percussive experiments. The sparse presence of subtle natural field recordings together with vast open sonic spaces is recurrently sustained by repetitive semi-artificial and frantic cosmic repetitions.

Comes with a riso-printed insert, handstamped inner sleeve, and a label sticker.

Berlin resident Anastasia Vtorova aka Machine Woman follows up her ‘For Sweden’ 12” on Peder Mannerfelt with two new cuts for Where To Now? Records, accompanied by an expansive and sprawling remix from Kassem Mosse.

Machine Woman is beginning to cement herself as a rather unique figure in the world of Techno. Her music is undoubtedly brutalist, functional, industrial, and stripped back for the most basic of heads down body movement, but there’s a persistent seductive, soulful, and human element to her work which is in a state of constant interplay with this idea of the ‘Machine Woman’ - an approach which is undoubtedly inspired by the pioneers of man vs. machine music - Kraftwerk.

‘Genau House’ opens with the 11 minute ‘I can mend your broken heart’. Shuffling percussion struts alongside a myriad of synthesized melodies and the sound of data processing. For Anastasia, the track is inspired by unsuccessful Tinder dates, and the yearning lyrical content of the tracks certainly laments the implications of this perhaps often mechanical and rigid love seeking world against an honest and seeking heart – A Machine Music space to explore the increasingly common impact of disposable Computer Love colliding head on with a legitimate longing and want for lasting human connection.

‘Friday Night’ encompasses a similar vocal mantra but here the focus is not so much on the intricacies of the human heart, but rather the seduction, enthrallment, and sometimes unfortunate exclusivity inherent in sectors of the Berlin nightlife. Undoubtedly a track aimed towards the pitch-black nightclub ‘Friday Night’ is stricter in its intention, with less space for romanticism. An unrelenting Techno thud grinds with the mechanical shifting of gears and movement to create the desired hypnotic state whilst Anastasia’s heavily treated vocals plume the melody into even darker recesses of the dancefloor.

Kassem Mosse makes an appearance to close the record with his own incredible interpretation of ‘I can mend your broken heart’. To call this a remix is a discredit to Kassem’s ability to completely transform a work into his own whilst staying respectful to the original artists intention. Much like his interpretation of Simone White’s ‘Flowers in May’ (Honest Jons, 2015) Kassem takes the vocal line of the original and sets it against a deep, sprawling, immersive soundscape of his own. Over it’s 10+ minutes a Deepchord style dubwise basin of echo and melody lingers behind the deepest Trip-Hop style palette of slow, churning, and intricately evolving percussion.

Benedikt Frey is many. Or just one? He is a composer. An arranger. A DJ. A Liveact. A ghost producer. A fan. He also plays in bands like INIT, or Dolphins or KEYS +++ produced the last two albums for Chris Imler. Downbeat in experimental dub zones. The goat for Edits and remixes. When house was his nation, he used to listen to pen names like Suedmilch or Venedikt Reyf. He still likes the music formed under their umbrella, but today his tomorrow is not echoed in yesterday. His sound signature moved on. Into the open. He founded labels like R.i.O. or Serious Trouble. 

He lives in Berlin. Physically. In mind Benedikt Frey is at many places. Traveling far thru his home studio that is a flat a studio a flat an instrument a record collection a flat a studio. Everywhere gear, vinyl, tapes, instruments, rooms for spontaneous sonic notions, these moments, when a sudden strike of stimulation falls. He is inspired a lot. For music to dance. Music for films. Music for live shows. Music for dancing glows. Techno, house, downbeat, ambient, jungle, electronics outside the norms. Those transportive ones. Jamming with others. Jamming with his mind. In Berlin Wedding, North of the town, where the lights dimmed low, neighbors share the flow, and a small river runs slow.  As a DJ he plays here, there, everywhere. Big clubs, small shacks, festivals, gatherings. From fast to 90 BPM - as he feels. 

For himself. For the crowd. In the spur. He still remembers his club kid days. Going to dance with friends. Down there in Offenbach. Doing the Robert Johnson. Collective emotions for a better tomorrow. These he still seeks. In his music. His shows. His collaborations. You can book him for a party. For enlightenment. For ecstasy or introspective perspectives. Dancing slow, whilst pirouetting a high-pitched show. 

Since more than a decade. His own music is out there, too. Bringing his spirits in sound. On his own labels. On international imprints like ESP Institute, Hivern Discs, Craigie Knowes, or Emotional Response. Solo works. Driving ones. Slow drills. Teased during his DJ dates around the planet. 

The music plays day and night. Inspiration comes. From a simple kick drum. A movie sequence. A bird on the sill. A picture, totally still. Can’t kick that feeling when it hits. Benedikt Frey. In dreams. In streams. In music. Emotions. Situations. At night. In those flashy lights, when it bites.
